What's the best way to apply glitter?
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:15:49 PM »
I got some glitter to put on my current pony that I'm working on, it's small spots here and there on the body that need glitter... How do you guys do it?

Glue + glitter

Sealer + glitter

something else?

I'm curious to know, I want a nice thin coat of glitter without leaving much of a raised surface

Also wondering, but our plan is total coverage.  DD loves sparkle.

I usually mix it with my sealant but then it depends on the final effect you want: do you want your glitter inside your sealant or do you want a pure glitter finish (without sealant on top)?

I always paint the area I'm going to place glitter on a darker color then paint triple thick acrylic on the area I want to apply the glitter, I rarely seal the glittered area after as I feel it diminishes the sparkle a bit.

Yah, I used Modge Podge for Autumn Gusty's glitter and I wouldn't seal it, it wouldn't sparkle.

I love the finish look of glitter without sealant but don't you get some glitter loss this way? I'll have to try it one day but I'm afraid my pony will loose all the glitter after a while.

I usually use paint with glitter over it. Usually don't seal it. It looses a LOT of sparkle.

If i want a definate coat of color i use color paint for the base. I use a drop of varnish and add glitter...the more you add the thicker the glitter look is. Less gliter gives a nice light sparkle. I put the varnish to seal it...no issues with loss of sparkle...the varnish can be gloss and semi gloss...normally looks like a small paint bottle:) i love doing glitter on my customes:)

GLITTER + GLITTER! GLITTER EVERYTHING!

i usually put glue and then use loose glitter on top then add a light gloss to the top to seal it.
loose glitter makes me kitchen look like a stripper exploded..

lol thanks :3

I don't plan to seal over the glitter, so I think I'll try the wet sealer and sprinkle glitter on it and see how that goes

You lose a bit, but as long as you're not banging the pony around against things it will hold up.

This pony has my favorite glitter application, not sealed

I always seal glitter. I don't think it looses much sparkle as long as you use a gloss sealer. ;)

Thanks Pop!  DD wants to totally cover one in glitter, seal it, maybe add a cutie mark, seal that.  I'm thinking the glittering is an outside project.  Now if I can get the wind to stop for a bit...
