Yes, contrast helps immensely in black and white. Don't be afraid to darken things up.

Howleen was actually done using the infared tool in picasa. It doesn't work with all dolls, but it works amazing with her.

Yep! If you bring up the shadow, (make them darker) and even lighten up the fill light/highlights, it makes all the difference. The  best way to find what looks good is to just play around with those settings. You'll start to get the hang of it!
