Title: Please show me... your best de-frizzes!
Post by: Sugar on February 13, 2013, 06:34:53 AM
Please!  I want to see how you've tamed unruly pony hair!

I'll even start us off with my Brightglow - got her off eBay and she looked like this:

Seriously matted and snarled.  I caught myself just in time, had just started in on her mane, and I took a photo to share!  Some work with the flattening iron at 250F later, she now looks like this:

Hooray for patience, flattening irons, and the unwillingness of nylon pony hair to melt!  She's still a teense frizzy towards the very tips of mane and tail, but sooooo much better than before. ;)

D'you ever wonder how many ponies wouldn't have been given up if they didn't get all frizzy-haired so fast? :wonder:  I find so many ponies, especially G3s and G4s, who need only a good combthrough and condition before they look splendid again... but enough rambling, please show me your best defrizzes! ^.^

*Edited to adjust temperature setting from Celsius to Fahrenheit...  Thanks again for pointing that out, PandoraFox! ^.^*

She looks fantastic! Nice work!

I just bought a flat iron ($4 at the thrift store, woo!) and I am so excited about trying to fix some ponies. If I actually find the time to try it out and have some success, I'll share photos.

I've got 1 I took pictures of...
It was this Paradise from a lot. Her fuzz was chipped and terribly dirty plus falling out. Her hair was...well bad.

But, with laundry detergent, the curling iron and patience

She became much better. I think another thing she had going for her is that the hair color responds well to  the detergent/curling iron method.

I love seeing a successful de-frizz. Some frizz is impossible to rid of (I think) while some will go out with enough elbow grease. I hope everyone's got cool de-frizz photos to add!

wow i have never been able to do this thus i do have a cheap hair straightener aka flat iron so have melted practice  ponies hair in the pass
i really really wish i could do this cos i can not stand frizzy dry hair.

I need to start taking Before photos, heheh. I have straightened many ponies with moderately frizzy hair, but haven't had the luck to come across a matted mess yet.

Tell me more about this detergent method...

Well I've got my stripes, who I'm still quite proud of. Though it's been quite a while since I fixed her up.
She went from this:

To this:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Needless to say, curls were added after that.

Some work with the flattening iron at 250C later.

Wait, which temperature system are you using? Is that degrees centigrade? Because I've never dared take my flattening iron over 100 degrees centigrade on pony hair, ever since I got one with adjustable temperature settings. I worked very carefully with a non adjustable one before, but I'm  much more comfortable with the new set up. (Takes a heck of a lot less turning the thing off and on for one!) However, I'd love to know just how hot I can risk going.

Also, WingsOfMasquerade, that Paradise looks amazing now!

You know, I'm so brainwashed accustomed to Celsius, I never even bothered to question if it mightn't be in Fahrenheit. :dragon:

*time passes*

I checked, and it is indeed in Fahrenheit.  OMG, thank you for pointing that out!  Yipes!  So... 250F is what I never go beyond - and even that has resulted in a messy melty moment when I wasn't too quick with the iron (but on a fakie I practiced with, so not so terrible).  I take my own hair up to 400, but that's because I have nasty natural curls that just don't... stay... straight!!!  Darned humidity.

Fahrenheit it is then! Thank you. That ought to be about 120 degrees Celsius actually, if Google isn't failing me.
And man, everything around my parts comes in degrees Celsius. If I'd get an item or device working with Fahrenheit I'd be so confused. XD

Also man, your hair sounds like the exact opposite of mine. Mine is so straight, I've resorted to special anti-slip hairbands. Now, I can finally have it in a high ponytail or something similar for more then an hour at a time. Putting curls in my hair is just not an option, before I'd be able to properly enjoy them, they'd be gone again.

I tried to do that on a NBBE Lickety Split, but it did not work. What did I do wrong?

I use a really good shampoo first...sometimes people will advise against this, but I actually find it kind of gets the hair a little softened up even before the conditioner goes in, especially when you have papya extract in it.  Next a good rinse and some really cood conditioner.  Try a few different ones and you're sure to find one you like. Next, get rid of the toaster in the bathtub ingrained horror you feel about ising a flatiron on wet hair.  I haven't been zapped yet, and don't intend to.  Just really give your iron a good cleaning after it cools down.  WITH THE CONDITIONER ON separate the hair into smallish sections.  The size of each section depend on how bad the frizz is. Pass a small tooth comb through the little strip of hair to align them as much as possible, then hit it with the flatiron.  Don't hold in any one place or too long, though, and each time you flatiron the hair, wet the hair again..I find this to be way effective.  pull the pony down and away from you while clamping and pulling the hair up a couple times, then switch and pull the pony up and the flatiron down.  This will help get both sides evenly.  Repeat until done. Make sure the hot iron oesn't get too hot, though. I use a little guy that gets to scorching fast, so I have to make sure my pony is ready from the get go. Practice on a baity pony first to get into the rhythm so you don't mangle a good one.
Run her hair under very hot to boiling water to rinse the leftover conditioner out, pass the comb through a few more times and you're done!  Sometimes there'll be a little dryness at the ends, at shich time you can decide to trim or leave as is.  Your pony, up to you.
Good luck!

Wow! So many wonderful transformations. I don't have any photos - I've never thought about using a hair straightener before. Mine only has one setting so I don't want to chance it ;)

I just use a regular clothes iron on the lowest setting & put a damp cotton cloth over the hair and work quickly brushing in between. Got the method from a long time Barbie collector who uses it on all his dolls (of all eras) and it's been completely safe so far for me.

I always leave the conditioner in the hair while im straigthening. I use a flattening iron that only has one setting, 200 celsius. That's 392 fahrenheit if I can trust google. I've seen pony hair melt only once, and that was the colour changing hair on Waverunner. Normal hair, never.

Here's some pictures:

Wow, some great de frizzing. I have done so many but sadly no before pics. I've never used a iron or curling iron though to scared. I let mine soak in fabric softner for a day or two, then wash out and apply conditioner for a few hours, then add suave de frizzy cream. Turns out beautiful but its a long process.

I'll have pictures of mine up later! I used a simple boil-dip-brush method.

Just a question; can the boil and dip method be used on ponies with tinsel in the hair? I gave all my ponies except the ones with tinsel a spa treatment just in case something happened.

LOL...I was wondering the same thing.

She is/was a restore project. Poor girl was the most damaged pony I've ever owned myself, with body parts missing, a leg cut open, burn marks, and severe paint damage. The idea was to completely restore her. I got around to the hair and fixing her missing/broken body parts but haven't had a chance to repaint her yet.

Geez, I've been away from the forum for ages. This is the first thread I read when I come back and it reminds me of why I love ponies and makes me itch to have a spa day for some of my collection. Unfortunately I don't have them with me at the moment!

These girls all look fabulous everyone, good job!

Currently I'm using one from a brand called Carmen, but a cheap dollar store one worked for me before.
It's really just the heat, and the pull on it as you pull the hair through the flat iron, that fixes the frizz. Perhaps you've got yourself a few stubborn ponies? From what I've understood, some just have harder to deal with hair then others.

Have you tried washing an conditioning their hair and leaving it a bit wet while you work with the iron? That tends to help quite a bit.

Also I noticed that you'll need to angle the iron as if you were curling, pulling the hair straight trough did nothing for me too. (In case you didn't try that already )

This :D Its also important to not neglect the conditioning before hand and doing very small sections of the hair at a time is important when you get a really frizzy one. I also only use cold water on mine as I've noticed it gives them a lot more shine~
For flat irons I pick ceramic ones, they can be a little pricy, but they heat really evenly and hold a steady temperature well so you don't get any nasty surprises. The only other thing I look for is indicator lights- a lot of higher end ones will have red and green lights to tell you when its up to temperature. This really comes in handy as your working because you know when to pause for a sec and let your iron heat back up.

Here's a freshie from just today.  Poor Denim Blue came in with the swampwater blues. She loos like Marge Simpson! She smells like Homer! And I think she has a little Milhouse in there too...she smacks of sidekick, and someone needs to introduce her to deoderant. Whew!

I'm not so sure this one will count as a "de-frizz" LOL, but this girl is my latest project and I spent over 2 hours fixing her hair. She had tons of little human/pet hairs stuck in that mess... I was so grossed out. I'm still not sure how I feel about perfume-puffs.

This is an awesome tip! I always forget to mention that - and it took me ages to suss it out myself when I started using a flat iron.

Thank you!!! :) PP are growing on me now that I've had her for longer. I found her for a great price and figured, "well if I'm ever going to own one... now is my chance!"

I'm loving seeing all these de-frizzes!  Great work, everypony! :cheer:

With luck, I should have a couple more done this weekend... ^.^

Who was looking for a brand-name on flattening irons?  I'm using the one I got to tame my own curls - a Caruso tourmaline.  It wasn't cheap, unfortunately, but it works dandy for both me and my ponies. ;)  It is somewhat large for working with ponies ( I have a lot of hair - thick and down past my shoulderblades, so it has to be heavy-duty) but it's totally work-with-able. ^.^

I used Pantene "naturefusion" leave-in conditioner (which I got from the Pound Shop!) and a ceramic flattening iron I got from Superdrug for £9.99.

Second time round I left the conditioner in for *hours* before brushing and flattening, and then let the hair dry *with the conditioner still in* after flattening, only washing it out afterwards - that seemed to do the trick!

Looks like I'll have to get more aggressive with my defrizzing; attempted a little the other day but I was so timid it looks like some of the tidier before pictures.

Can anyone offer advice on defrizzing a So Soft? I'd rather not deflock, so I'm afraid to get too close to the roots!

LOL! Yes, she is!!

But, she and I are both enjoying the novelty her newfound long, straight, silky(ish!) locks for a while first!

She spent literally over a decade with that head of frizz and I plaited her tail just to tame it as I didn't know how to go about de-frizzing 'til I rejoined this site a couple of weeks ago!  :)

When I get around to trying to re-curl her mane (again, something I've never done - any tips?!) I'll post more pics

Better late than never!

I'm thinking straw curls are the way to go with her. :) My fingertips are tingling to get into defrizzing and recurling my childhood Molasses. I've never seen her with curls for she came from flea market, but I'd love to redo them anyway!

Oh lord. I haven't made it to the defrizzing part yet, but I did spend 45 minutes detangling 3 ponies hair, lol!

Will have to slowly but surely try to get them defrizzed.

Every time I see a perfume puff pony, I think of the movie Amadeus and the big wigs they wore. I get "Queen Of The Night" stuck in my head too.

How do you make their manes looks so shiny and new?  Mine don't look like that after.  I think the tangles were so bad that the hair looks all frayed at the end.  :C

REALLY wish I'd seen this before I completely rehaired my G3 Minty. Ah well, I'll have to give it a try on a few other ponies. I didn't think you could defrizz hair this good, let alone the hair with tinsel.

Its just a matter of using as much conditioner as possible to be honest. Sometimes even once the hair is straight and frizz free you should condition it again [leaving the conditioner in to properly soak - keep it damp by wrapping the hair in saran wrap over night or for 24 hours - and then rinse out].

Conditioner is indeed magic stuff. I also do find I always have a hint of frizz left at the ends of a ponies hair. It still tends to feel a little rough, right at the very ends of the hair when I'm done. It's just not enough to be a bother or look bad.
