To be honest--and this could just be me here--before MLP, I never really actively bought blind bag or box items seriously, they were just something neat to grab one or two of, open (preferably with a friend), and see what I got. It was the surprise that was the exciting part, not the collecting part. Could Hasbro be thinking they're not gonna get many repeat buyers, so they may as well do the same characters over and over?

Totally think this is the reason.

They dont want to release the same thing again and again but its cheaper and easier to go with the same characters with minor differences than register whole new names and come up with new designs for a very inexpensive item.

Blind bags are not so plentiful in wave to fulfil collectors wishes; right now blind bags of anything are just super popular and that cheap "surprise", disposable product is probably making them a pretty penny. If its good enough for Mattel/Disney and Lego then it makes sense for Hasbro to get in on the trend.

I agree with hathorcat.  And in addition to bday party favors, they also seem to be popular as stocking stuffers and little Easter egg prizes.  They're kind of like the "nicer" side of party favors and holiday trinkets though, but still distinctly not as nice (or expensive) as the little plastic Pokemon or Digimon figures I collected as a kid.

Ha, I collected the Digimon minis too! They were my first real collection, I still have probably 200. The level of detail they got on figures smaller than blind bags was astounding.

Don't forget most people that aren't adult collectors don't use the codes and are probably not planning on getting the whole set. Adding just a handful of new ones to chase after along with a few repeats makes sense.

I see them get bought in bulk for parties, presumably to give one to each guest or something similar.

yeah, I bought them as favours to be given during my daughter's birthday and I have quite a few mummy friends who do that too..in fact, one of them just gave me the heads up about the new wave! wave 10 is in Singapore! confirmed on Hasbro Singapore facebook just a while ago...

You'd think they'd switch it up with which letters get left out. Q I can see, but what do they have against J? :(

That's what I was thinking. J + I are pretty similar. Sometimes it's hard to read the letters on those packages anyhow

I don't want to like wave 10, since it's soooo repeaty, but I'm finding it hard to resist some of that glitter! I just bought a Ribbon Wishes and I've never even liked her before. She was only a dollar, but still. ;_; And then there are the ponies I need in both glittery and prototype form, like Diamond Mint... ay ay ay ay

I almost wonder if it was a fluke. There was still a wave 8 box on the shelf there too and Wave 9 has still been pretty scarce.
