Oh, huh, how weird/cool.. I bet it's a replica of a show prop too, the style/design looks very retro. Like, the solid colours and everything; haven't seen a backpack like that in years.

I do remember seeing this artwork on a real vintage item though. I don’t think it was a backpack. I thought it was either a duffle bag or lunchbox. So it is possible that this backpack was a real item from the 80’s and they’ve  remade it. I haven’t had a chance to look up vintage pony school supplies. If I find anything I’ll let you all know

Yup!!  Definitely that artwork was on a vintage lunchbox...like a soft sided one. I have a photo of it but am having difficulty getting it linked at the moment

But I actually really hope it isn't in the show. There's no possible way this could be an item from Indiana in 1985, since the eyelash princesses didn't come out until 1990, and I'm pretty sure that backpack is European anyway. It's sort of disrespectful to be faithful to the minutiae of 80s "boys" stuff, and then just use whatever the frilliest thing you can find for the girls' side regardless of accuracy.

Hmm, yeah... that would definitely be an anachronism. :/ RaMC/Applejack would be very accurate to 1985... I wonder how they landed on a 1990 backpack (if, indeed, it is featured in the show).

To be fair, I don’t know enough about the “boy’s” 80s nostalgia to know if the show is being accurate down to specific year.

Out of curiosity, how many mlp backpacks existed?  I remember seeing duffle bags and purses but not a lot of backpacks.  Did someone just search for images of an mlp backpack?  Or did someone connected to the show actually own the original backpack and that’s why it was specifically chosen?

Well that's disappointing... But I guess if the anachronism is coming from inside the house, then there's no room to complain.

I never seen stranger things but I am digging the "Emo AJ" look.
Also, I have seen some retro MLP shirts popping up on Taobao recently. One had the the baby ponies with the printed diapers, one had a female thundercloud (I bought this one cause it came in a normal size (not asian sizes) and some other knockoff mosshino? prints

Huh, that's kinda cool. I don't watch the show so idk how good they are usually for avoiding anachronisms.. I have to admit I probably wouldn't have thought about this being one without it being pointed out to me. At least they got the generation right, instead of using G3 like I've seen some "retro" things do :p

This was also posted in the comments about the backpack on Facebook.  Looks like an attempt was made to find a more time accurate prop.   I’m guessing they were either unable to find someone who had one and was willing to lend/sell it or was unable to find one that looked like it was relatively new and not 30+ years old.  Those older backpacks do look like they wouldn’t hold up very well.
