If you don't know already, there is the Netflix series The Toys That Made Us. They have a small amount of episodes dedicated to the history of a certain toy (Barbie, Star Wars and so on) They will soon be covering MLP. They have released the episodes to Netflix, so the date should be anytime soon.
I'm looking forward to this episode, but I do wonder if it will further increase the prices. Recently I saw they posted about Rapunzel, so that also has me a bit worried.
Or do you think it will be good for the community, like drawing in more fans and more discussion.
I'm interested in all the behind the scenes sort of information they have gathered like who was in charge of what and where the ideas came from and all that jazz.
What are your thoughts?
-
To be honest, if they are specific about it being Rapunzel that's expensive, it's not a big issue. Her price is already so inflated that a little more won't hurt. It's so long as they don't imply all ponies are worth that much...
Though ponies like Rapunzel didn't make me, as she wasn't sold here xD.
I haven't seen any of this series, and I don't know how I feel about this one because the series I've seen about toys in the past always treat MLP in a patronising and mocking kind of way. It would be interesting to know the history stuff, providing that it isn't the usual trajectory of, G1 happened, (blur the middle bit because nobody cares) and it led to the amazing global sensation of G4!
-
I'm definitely excited to see what they cover and who they interview. This show really goes in depth which is why I enjoy it so much!
Plus I definitely can understand your concerns when it comes to ponies and their prices, collectors will most likely keep things the same but others I can definitely see their prices being jacked up.

The solution is as it always is. Don't pay the jacked up price and eventually it will drop again. Sometimes collecting is playing the long game :)

I wasn't aware they will be doing a MLP episode! I watched all the episodes that are available here and enjoyed them a lot. Was wondering if they ever produce more episodes. Especially explaining the history of the toys and what was going on behind the scenes was very fascinating - will be awesome to see this for MLP! I was disappointed that there wasn't an episode covering them, so this is really good news :)
-
I would love to see the mlp episodes, but I fear for the price increase. If they do it right, they will let them know not to sell any baity peachy's for 40 bucks each. (No shade on peachy, I love peachy, I will make her a warhammer soon :))
-
Looking much forward to this! I'm hoping for a lot of interesting G1 stuff to be revealed, but would actually also really like to hear about the design process behind G2 (considering it was done by Kenner, and how it later became an Euro exclusive toyline). However, I think we'll be lucky if G2 even gets a brief mention in the documentary. :P

The series is aimed at nostalgics and goes deep into the history of each toy franchise it covers. Modern iterations are brought up, but never a heavy focus. It's very joke-y and pokes a lot of fun at whatever brand they're covering, but it's still respectful.

I think they've done a pretty job so far on the episodes I've seen treating the toyline with respect. I heard at one point they were looking for MLP collectors to find out more information about them. Here's a screenshot of the Rapunzel post.

They assumed the date on her hooves was the date she was released instead of the mold date but other than that I don't see anything wrong with their post.

I’m very much looking forward to it! In fact, I went and dragged out this post I had going for a while where I was copying their Facebook posts in regard to MLP for people over here. The photos look like they are no longer working but you can see the wide range of people that they interviewed.

Cool! I’ve seen the other episodes and enjoyed them. It’s of info
to cram into the time allotted just a FYI. So there are things about
the original line that will be skipped. Next to nothing of the modern lines
but that’s the same for the other episodes.
I love how they don’t take the matter too seriously, a bit of tongue and
cheek. A dash of yes we’re tapping the 80s nostalgia craze.

If it means I can sell a Peachy or Lemon Drop for $10 instead of throwing them at people to get rid of them sounds ok to me. I don't think this one show can cause that much of a ripple in fandom to be honest...

I agree, that seems reasonable. It's specifically Rapunzel, and well, there's not much we can say about that, because she does sell for that money. Except that she's not THE holy grail and some ponies go for more, and they really don't need to know about the insanity of Nirvana stuff xD.
That Punzie has a pretty tail. My Punzie would be jealous. :)

My Rapunzel arrived in Feb of 1992 along with the mail order Mommy and baby.

...Valentine's day?

...Valentine's day?
wow, I didn't even think about that.
So, proof that Hasbro loves me??? (LOL!!!)

It seems like they took a long time to put Season 3 together, so I'm glad to hear it has finally been delivered. I'm really looking forward to hearing about all the wacky behind-the-scenes hijinks!
"Payment method: cash"? Did you send 90¢ in change through the mail? Ah, the past is a foreign country

You are blessed. *bows*
@BlushingBlue - Somewhere I have a receipt from ebay from paying my ebay fees in cash in 1998 or 1999 xD. And that was me sending $ cash to California. From England. I don't remember if I got change though...

I dont remember its posssible i sent cash. Usually before i had a checking account either i would give my mom the money and she would write a check for me or id get a money order. in feb 1992 I would have been 19. So i dont know at this point, not sure if theyd list a money order as cash or not.

I've been patiently waiting for Season 3, I really have enjoyed the whole series.

For those wondering if the episode might inflate prices of ponies, has anyone noticed prices hike of other toys after their episodes? I haven't really heard of anything from other fandoms. We're probably safe. I'm excited to see the episode as I've really enjoyed the others, even toys that I had no interest in.

I have on Barbie dolls that I use to have in the 90s going up in price on eBay.uk
Luckily four years ago (I think) I got Midge she cost me £17.95 no postage as it was free.
No anytime I see Midge I see a lot for too much money, same with her clothes.

Has anyone heard when the new season will be on Netflix?

I haven’t heard anything. The show’s Facebook page has stated that they sent it to Netflix. But no word on when Netflix will actually release it.
-
Huh, hadn't heard of this series before! I'll have to catch up on the earlier episodes before Season 3 hits :P Sounds like a good show to watch as I clean!
-
Come on! Just release it already! :stressed: :hmm: :pullhair: :sneaky:  :shakefist: :throw:

FINALLY!
I’ve been waiting and waiting. It sure takes awhile for things to come to Netflix. I’m glad to have a date now though. Thank you for posting that!
Lots of good stuff in this season!

New Season 3 trailer, has mentions about bronies.

I'll watch it for some of the G1 creation infos but I am not looking forward to - yet again - people discussing why Western otakus exist and completely disregarding boys who enjoyed G1.
What I am more interested in is how they transition to new gens and what influences the shifts. Especially the G2 shift and failure in the US market. But I bet half of the pony segment will be waxing poetically about pone-takus.

Uuuuuggghhhh... Why...? I’m honestly afraid that this has become MLP’s “legacy”. Can it just be about the toys again? Please?
-
From what I recall of previous episodes they focused heavily on the creation of each toy brand and the people involved with it, not so much on fandom stuff (though the He-man one talked a bit about the adult fanbase, mainly because they're the only ones invested in the franchise these days). Will be disappointing if the MLP ep is any different.
Really tiresome to still hear "Adult men watching a show for little girls???? SO WEIRD!!!" in 2019, but at least the trailer had mostly G1 stuff so hopefully that bodes well. Of course G4 is also a very important part of the brand's history so I don't mind it being there, just hope it doesn't take up too much of the episode.
-
We are never living them down, do we? :(
Atleast Mad Max's "curse of part 4 overshadowing older" is actually nice...
-
I'm hoping that the brony reference will be brief and the rest of the episode will focus on MLP toys especially G1. It looks like they interviewed someone that has enlarged copies of the pamphlet/brochure ads.
