How do you protect yourself from the Sun? (plus sketches)

So, it's almost that time of the year again: when it gets a little bit too hot out there and you need to watch when and where you're going out. So, what is your method?

Me, I don't like sun creams and other chemicalies. I feel like they cause more trouble then good. True, they have some of the best UPF rates, but they get all sticky on you after extended periods, plus it doesn't make you feel any less like burning alive. I have a very fair skin so I burn up easily. Last year I tried an umbrella and it worked miracles as a portable shade, albeit I was given a lot of weird faces on the streets, so in the end I settled for long-sleeved shirts and/or doing my best to stay in shades.

This year though, I plan on making myself a slick yet simple cape with long sleeves that could protect my arms. This way it can both protect from the sun and be airy enough, plus easy to take off or put on. Also, sun cream on my face.

I just.. don't go out outside. I mean I leave my house of course but I try to avoid being in direct sunlight as much as possible. I'm very pale and burn very quickly even with sunscreen. Plus I live in Texas, by the gulf, and my friends are always at the beach and then they come home bright red and I don't suffer because I stayed indoors. I already had one bad sunburn this year, no thanks. I took me over a month to fully recover, it's not worth the trouble.

I guess when I go to schlitterbahn I'll have to take a bath in sunscreen just to survive.

Heh, that makes two of us. I stay inside almost all summer except when it is absolutely necessary to go out in broad daylight. If I can I like to postpone them until the sun is setting.

Haha yeah, I'm not even trying to be rude or sarcastic, I honestly avoid being in daylight as much as possible. I'm not an outdoorsy person and even when I am I'd rather it be in the afternoon when the sun is setting. I don't always like it because I miss out on fun outings but sometimes the risk of burn is too great for my super pale skin.

Spf30/50 depends what we have in when I am out in Spain at home... Let's be honest I live in England sun is not something we have that much trouble with here.

But if we do get me a deck chair and a pair of shorts sun worshipper here

I keep covered up and put sunscreen on my face and neck, as well as doing kind of Metal Gear Solid routine with strategically diving into every available patch of shade while I'm on my way to my destination. If I can get away with it, then I do stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and set out during late afternoon when it's less severe.

I am horrible at putting on sunscreen. One, I don't like it and two, I always forget. My makeup has a good SPF but I've gotta pay attention to my hands and neck. I can't get sunscreen to rub in well, it just stays on the surface of my skin. The one that I have found and like is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen. I got a deep facial peel about a year ago and have been better about sunscreen since. Also: hats.

That sounds hilarious! I can imagine you ducking and rolling grapplehooking to the shadiest trees and sneaking through the bushes.

I don't like chemicals either, just no, yucky.

The cloak seems like a great idea and I swear by hats.  Definitely hats.

Edited to add:
I have a friend with red hair and freckles who puts on a lot of sunscreen just for an hour of lap swimming and one day he missed a spot and in just that one hour, that spot was bright red.  I'm glad my skin isn't that sun sensitive!

I have VERY pale skin so spf 50 babies netrogena sunscreen is vital to my survival in Texas or when I visit home in Florida! I usually dont go outside in the peak of the day unless its rainy, I'm kind of crepuscular meaning I'm out and about near sunset and early mornings when its not hot. I wear jackets outside in the dead of summer to protect my poor arms. I LOVE to go to the beach at least every few months, umbrellas are lifesavers for vampire skinned girls like me! xD I actually don't get sunburned as much as I do here in Texas than when I lived in Florida. Personally I prefer to go outside when it's very stormy or when its snows. Going to the beach here in winter is amazing because on Mustang Island I can camp there for days and be cozy in a jacket and jeans.

Coconut oil. A natural product and works decently well as a sunscreen. Makes you smell tropical, too.

Sun screen. 100 spf. At least. Yeah.....I like being practically glow in the dark thanks.
