The accent thread! Post your voice.

I'm from Missouri, so I don't think you can really hear an accent in my voice. But I could sound like a complete hick and not even know, I suppose. In this video clip, I'd heartily appreciate it if you just ignore the mess in Chloe's crib. This is from a few months back. Yes, she does like her blankets!

I am as Scottish as its possible to be - west coast Scotland though so more Gerard Butler Scottish [from my home town lol] less Ewan McGregor Scottish

when i was very little i decided that i wanted to lose my US southern accent. i was afraid it made me sound less than bright and very poor. so i practiced and practiced. i lurked in after school speech therapy classes. i recorded myself on my little cassette deck reading and then listened and critiqued. "naw, dun't sayit like that!" i studied the national newscasters with their wonderful broad midwestern neutral accent and i mimicked. after years of doing this diligently, it worked. i have a very neutral american accent, little trace of my original drawl.

unless i'm a touch upset. and the a little bit of looziana creeps in. and emotional or no i can't say new-or-leans. it's neworlins all squished and one quick word.

My accent isn't the common accent for where I live. I don't know where I acquired my accent. But I think     it's affected by the fact I'm half deaf and had a bad speech impediment growing up, which I had to go to therapy for. I think you can still hear it a bit though. Also my nose doesn't work, which probably makes my voice sound more snuffily than if I was born with a working one.

Ren-Ren, I really like the softness in your voice! I know what you mean with the video voice, I used to do that on vlogs last year   but now I suppose I'm more natural.

I don't think I have any clips of my default speech patterns but it's sorta light south-west England with touches of the West Midlands and Manchester because they're the people I associate with at Uni. I guess I'm probably pretty hard to place these days

I'm not north enough to have that drawl that you get in the northern parts of WI and upper MI (we call dat Upper talk-a sounds like eh-like Fonzie from Happy Days). 

I have an aunt that moved to Cali back in the 80's. Now, she doesn't really have a distinguishible accent, but she talks sooooo fast!

 

I've already been told that by friends from other countries and I'm like 'whatever, I don't have one' XP I really do wonder what we Americans who don't have accents sound like to those who can hear one on us.

When we don't have distinguishible accents, think of what people sound like in movies (that don't purposefully have an accent).

I've been told by a lot of people in the past that they don't recognize my accent and can't figure out where I'm from.  I spent the first 8 years of my life in Ohio, and the rest of the time (over 20 years) in Mississippi.  My theater teacher in college said I didn't sound either northern or southern.  Said she couldn't place my accent and asked me where I was originally from.  I had to try sounding southern for a skit and just couldn't do it.  I wonder if it's because I hardly ever talked to people as a kid and kept my nose in a book all the time. 
 
I'm not a fluent speaker of Spanish at all (do want to learn though); I took it one year in high school many years ago.  But I was talking with a Mexican guy one day and practicing my Spanish and he said my accent was really good.

I'll have to agree, we don't really have an "accent' and midwesterners in general are found to have the purest form of the English language, hence why you'll see news reporters looking to be more midwestern.
