Title: Wisdom tooth experiences?
Post by: teacher316 on May 03, 2012, 05:56:37 PM
I'm having my wisdom tooth out tomorrow and am a little nervous. Does anyone have any experiences where it was not horribly painful? I have taken a couple people to the dentist for extractions and they were always in A LOT of pain afterwards! Then again I'm only having one taken out and they had 2 or more done. Ugh! I need some encouraging stories if you have them!

I had three out, but they were not impacted so it was not that bad.  I had them out on a Thursday and by Sunday I was back out again and felt pretty much normal :)  My advice is if they tell you to put an ice pack on soon after you get home, do just that.  I made sure to do that and kept the ice pack on for a while had very little swelling that way.  Since you only have one, it should not be too bad  :)  I know it can be nerve-wracking and I, like you was nervous since I had heard some friends say they were in a lot of pain.  I know everyone is different, but for me personally, it definitely was not as bad as I thought it would be!   Your doctor should be able to give you some good advice for recovery too, or help you if you have any questions in general :)   Try to relax if you can and get a good night's sleep- it will be over before you know it and you will feel better once the tooth is removed.  Pony hugs  :lovey:

Instead of having surgery, I had my two back teeth--one on each side--removed because they both needed root canal anyway. This was done months apart. The first pull went really, really well. No sutures, it didn't bleed much, and relatively no pain after the first day. The second one was so deep, my dentist saw my jawbone. The pain was terrible, I wouldn;t stop bleeding, I had mnay sutures and was put on antibiotics to fight a potential sinus infection. It only lasted a week, though. I woke up one day last week and there was no pain at all! I had the sutures removed and the dentist said I've healed up quite well. Now all I have to di is wait for the wisdom tooth to drop down and grown, like it has on the other side. Alot easier than getting that three hour surgery.
Edit: Okay, the story of the pain probably just scared you. Didn;t mean to do that. What I had was completely different than what you'll probably be doing. My post was originally meant to show the difference between the two extractions and to say that although your friends went through a lot of pain, it doesn't necessarily mean you will too :) Just trust in the doctor and try to keep yourself calm and it should go well!

I was a freak of nature - I actually had five wisdom teeth, all impacted.  The surgery itself wasn't bad.  I was out cold (they had to dig in my jaw, after all) and gave me good drugs.  I didn't eat for 48 hours - just slept and drank water.

The aftercare is the tedious and annoying part.  Flushing your sockets out after meals, all that stuff.  It can get really sore, so have ice and heat packs ready.  Remember, ice dulls severe sharp pain and reduces swelling; hot slowly eases pain away.  Use what works for you.

Don't be surprised if your hearing is off for a day or two.  No one told me this!  I got freaked out when I was listening to a CD I'd listened to many times, and the sound was off by about a half-note.  XD It's very temporary, though.

Do NOT eat if you don't feel like it, no matter how folks around you may try to get you to.

Good luck!  Don't be nervous.  It's really not that bad.

I was knocked out for my 4 impacted wisdom teeth. I had a hard time waking up. I just slept and got drool all over my pillow a lot for the first 24 hours afterwards. The pain wasn't too bad. Ice and heat is good like Eviecorn said! I had 4 other teeth removed before that. I prefer being knocked out.

Pretty much this exactly, haha. The worst part for me was coming out from under the anesthesia. I actually had pretty much zero pain after my 4 came out. I was miserable for about 4 days because my antibiotics made me feel sick, but other than that it was fine.

I actually just had mine out last month.  Mine weren't impacted, but they were coming in sideways.  The worst part wasn't the actual extraction or even afterwards, I simply psyched myself up and got super nervous, and it really was all for nothing.  It wasn't very painful at all for me, and after the teeth were out the dentist gave me some drugs that eased the pain and helped me sleep.  After a couple of days of those drugs, I stopped taking them and was able to switch to ibuprofen.  I ate things like pudding and jello for the first few days, then was able to move on to more and more solid foods.  Don't forget to drink plenty of water as well!

Really the main thing that bugged me was keeping the holes in my gums clean, but again, it wasn't painful, just kind of annoying when food would get trapped in there and I had to swish water in my mouth for like 5 minutes.

I'm sure you will do fine, once it is done, you never have to worry about it again! :)

I need mine out but I'm terrified of the surgery.

I had all four of mine out at once.  Two weren't impacted and the other two were only partially impacted.  They put me in a twilight sleep for it.  I could tell they were doing something in my mouth and could respond to some instructions but was only partially concious.  It really wasn't as bad as I feared.  I only took the prescribed pain medicine the first day then only some over-the counter stuff after that (tylenol or aspirin or something like that).  They did get one of my stitches too tight so I had a dull ache on one side right up until I went in to get the stitches removed (not really that painful - just uncomfortable).  The ache disappeared the instant they clipped the thread.  I think it was my mom that said hers were the easiest teeth she'd ever had pulled - they weren't impacted and had practically no roots.

I had two out (both on the same side of my mouth).  They were through the gum and sitting straight but the bottom one had an infection under it that did not clear up with antibiotics.  The dentist took them both out inside of 20 minutes and I didn't feel a thing.  I needed stitches on the bottom and the holes in my gums were pretty 'mushy' feeling (ewww) for a while but that was all. I had KFC potato and gravy for tea that night :)

Good luck!!

I had all mine out at once. It wasn't painful at all, but then again I was put completely out for it. Only bad thing was... the top ones got really infected and took 2 months to heal D: And the stitches fell out..and I couldn't eat anything! I suppose that wasn't the most reassuring story xD Most people seem to heal within a few days to weeks and have very little pain :) I wouldn't worry about it at all! Good luck!

I had two taken out at the start of the year. I was totaly anethatised but woke up feeling very grogy as they gave me 20mg of tamazipam first.

I had my 4 taken out under a general anesthetic, they were coming through rotten or impacted or both. I can't have any dental work done concious, I have to go to a sedation clinic and be given the happy drugs.

Aftercare is the main thing, I lapsed with the mouthwash and ended up with a nasty infection in half my face. Getting antibiotics as a just in case is an idea! But having one out is different to four, it shouldn't be as traumatic on your body for a start :)

All of mine removed the same day. Dreaded the day until afterwards, no matter what my parents said but they were right in the end. I healed up quicker than the doc anticipated and did get to basically eat what I felt like eating vs what I'd normally eat, which was kinda nice.

I had all four of mine removed several years ago.  They weren't impacted, but they were just barely starting to break through the gum.  I was out cold for the procedure and the first thing I heard the surgeon say was, "And we're done."  The nurse lead me into the recovery room and plopped me down in a big comfy chair with a blanket.  They kept trying to get me to open my eyes and wake up, but I was thinking, "No way!  I'm comfy and I'mma sleep."  I slept in the car on the way home and slept the rest of the day on the couch in front of the TV.  Once the anesthetic wore off, I felt like my normal self again.

I was nervous at first too since it was my first time going under general anesthesia and my first time having any sort of surgery.  I had little to no pain afterwards thanks to the pain meds they sent me home with.  Just get yourself plenty of rest, make sure to rinse out your sockets and rinse with salt water after every meal and before bed, and stick to soft foods for about a week or so.

Good luck! <3

I was out for the procedure.  I have vague memories of wandering about my dentist's office, singing off-key and trying to start conversations with the IV machine.

When I was alert enough to realize where I was, I was passed out on my grandma's couch with bags of frozen corn wrapped around my head.  My face hurt so much!

But yeah, soon enough you forget the pain.  It sucks, but it passes... Besides, you get to eat soft, squishy food, so you have an excuse to eat delicious soup and ice cream!  If you have the dissolving stitches, they do taste absolutely terrible.  But just eat an Italian ice or something, you won't really notice it.

So yeah, you're gonna be just fine!

I was out too- had all 4 removed. They had already broken through.

I remember waking up halfway in my parents' van and wondering how I'd gotten there. They didn't give me any drugs, but I bled a lot. I had to hang over the sink for quite a few hours.

Do not swallow the blood if you're bleeding! It will disrupt the stomach and cause vomiting, which is extremely unpleasant with any oral surgeries.

Dairy foods are not a good idea- they can actually cause infections. It's better if you stick to icy products. One thing that I had was lots of Pedialyte (don't drink the Pineapple- it will burn).

Seriously!?  My grandma stuffed me full of soft cheeses and ice cream!  I guess I got lucky not to have any infections!  :(

I hope everything goes ok for you today.

I had only had one wisdom tooth, and it wasn't too bad having it taken out. They put you under and you don't really remember anything about it. Afterwards, you will be sore, but I don't remember it being too bad. They perscribe you tylenol 3's or something, so it doesnt really hurt as much.

Good luck!

Dairy products have small particles that can get caught in the wound and cause infections. I remember hearing something else about the pathogens in them, but I can't find anything on it right now.

That's actually rather awful considering my grandma was a nurse and is my family's number one go-to for medical advice...  Well, jeez, I might just have to give her a piece of my mind for that one!

I had four of them taken out it was not hugely painful due to them being just buds but i did find out i am severely allergic to laughing gas to the point where it could kill me. I wound up throwing up the whole time they were working, all the way home, then for 5 hours after i got home till my dad got some anti histamine meds.   I could not open my jaw much for a week though but in the end i was fine and am glad i will never have this done again.  I did have to be given nova cane about 12 times though.

Aww that's a bummer.  I can't say that having your teeth removed will be FUN (as I'm sure will you know by the time you read this), but mine weren't awful.  All 4 were compacted and I had horrible bruising and swelling.  But I played in my citywide concert a week later and managed, so it couldn't have been THAT bad.  Just keep your mouth clean to avoid dry socket.  My husband got that when his were removed and it was really nasty.

How are you feeling?

I got all four of mine out. I was freaking out before, so they gave me some really nice drugs to take before hand, lol. Apparently when they gave me forms to sign I was drawing out my name with lightning bolts and vines and all sorts of stuff XD They knocked me out and it wasn't a bad experience at all. Even after I woke up I was never in any pain. Just remember to rinse and don't use straws to drink. I'm sure you'll do just fine :)

I wish I had seen this earlier so I could tell you about a fairly positive experience before your surgery! Well I hope everything went well for you!

For me, I was so scared to have mine out, but actually, it wasn't so bad a at all, even with have 4 impacted teeth removed. I had general anesthesia, and the only really weird thing was that I lost a few hours after I got home. It was weird, not like I slept through those hours (which I didn't, my mom tells me I was awake), but like they never happened.

As for pain, all I took was a few prescription-strength ibuprofen the first two days (really, just at night), and regular ibuprofen for a few days after that. And the first day after I got home, alternating between ice and ..no ice? or maybe something warm. Like I said I don't entirely remember XD . I didn't need anything stronger, but also, my mom recommended I not take the stronger stuff if I didn't think I really needed it because it can have weird side effects. In fact, most of my friends' problems with having their wisdom teeth out came from the painkillers afterwards. Actually, the worst pain I had was after the checkup, when they cleaned the area, and even that was bearable.

I really didn't even have too much of an issue eating! I had soup and soft things like egg the first day or two, but after that, I ate fairly normal. Probably should have been more careful since the holes were kind of big, but I was fine.

Oh, and Eviecorn, you're not the only person I've heard of who had more that 4! I knew a girl in high school who's brother had 6 and her dad had 8!

I had 4 removed a couple years ago. 2 top ones were showing, on the bottom I had 1 impacted and 1 particially impacted and was touching underneath my back tooth. I had a 50% chance of nerve damage to the front of my mouth. I was scared!

They had 2 put me all the way under. I went to outpatient surgery. Afterwards was pretty horrible. Not much pain at all. (and I couldn't handle the drugs they gave me so that was good.) It was the bleeding that took forever to stop. I had to keep a mug, tissues, and trash bag near me for about a week. Sleeping was a mess. Swallowing it makes you sick so you have to spit it out.

I ate ramen noodles for a couple weeks. They made me eat right after surgery when I got home. I didn't want to but they said I would be sick if I didn't and no one wants stomach acid in their sutures!

I am so glad I had it done! You will feel much better once you get that tooth out.

I had all four of mine removed when I was 16 (so like, 17 years ago!).  It went fine.  I opted to be put semi-under, and my oral surgeon let me bring some music CDs to listen to during the whole process.  So all I remember is listening to REM and then that's about it.  Recovery was pretty normal - I was fine with taking Tylenol for the pain.

Yep, make sure you stay on top of the aftercare - rinsing, pain meds, etc.  :)  You'll look like a chipmunk for a few days but as long as there are no infections - and they SHOULD give you an antibiotic to be sure - you should be fine.  Sore, but you won't have to worry about them again!  :)

I only had 3 - all were impacted.  I was unconscious so I don't remember anything until I woke up and crawled to the car.  After that, I took my pills a few minutes early each time, to stay on top of things, and then I spent 2 days recovering.  By Day 4, I was back at work.

Update: Tooth is out and I'm doing well. The actual procedure wasn't bad at all. I had laughing gas and novacane so I couldn't feel anything. When they wore off I was pretty sore but they prescribed hydrocodone and I alternate that with ibuprofen. I have iced it too which helps a little. The bleeding has stopped and started so I'm trying to stick to eating pudding and mashed potatoes. I'm still a little sore when I chew stuff. All in all I'm doing much better and I can't wait to eat regular food again!

I'm glad it went well :) I was put under to have my 4 out. I was a little sore and stayed in bed for a couple days, and just drank Boost and water (couldn't eat). Took a little while for my bruising to go away, but I bruise easy.
