Now going off topic but just to say that Gusty's rusty bit is improving as is Cherries Jubilee's yellow mark. Using hot water and magic eraser.

Pony Corral / Re: Anyone else have Gusty Armies? Can I see?? ^-^

My one Gusty has rust around her tail hole and I'm sad so she's not going to get her photo posted today. I'm new to all this and I already have a few Snowflakes for some reason - I really love them. So cool that other people have 'armies' of just one kind! This has inspired me to go for it for it big time with Snowflakes, flawed ones will get outfits. I am going to knit small accessories and give them away at Christmas =D. Snowflake, come to Mummy!

Prefer them to be loose. Even though I live in a very arid area I'm still paranoid of icky things living inside my ponies.

This is how I feel - I want to catch any problems early or prevent them

OK I've bathed and de-washered 10 ponies in two days. Here are the things I've learned (confirming some of the great advice above, many thanks!)

1. I'm not going to try to do so many in one go again. I run out of patience even though I love it so much. And you need major patience to remove heads.

2. Neck rings vary a lot. Use copious hot water and even hair dryer to warm up the glue. In many ponies the glue on the outside of the neck seal is easy to crack open under hot water with a blunt blade. However, one further into the join, some pony types have one or more points where the plastic seems actually fused between body and neck plug. Here it seems that using a sharp knife is unavoidable. Annoyingly in the Bow Tie pose the tough spot is right in the crook of the neck where any mistakes will be mega-obvious. On some ponies the base of the plug it really tough to open up all around the circumference - I ended up gently scoring with a sharp knife till the plug was free.

3. The two neck plugs (inside the neck seal) that I tore happened (1) because the blunt knife slipped in too far during the initial stage (2) I pulled strongly at a strong spot in the ring of the neck plug and tore too quickly into a weaker spot. So I blame myself and put this down to lack of patience. The variation in the plastic makes it really hard to judge how deep to go or how much strength to use so you just have to take it REALLY REALLY slowly, use strong but consistent pressure and keep swilling it under the hot water tap. This damage doesn't show on the outside and is 2 in 40 ponies so I'm kinda OK about it.

4. If nail varnish remover is necessary, only use the cheapest least coloured nail varnish remover as this is more likely to be purer acetone; formulations are different. Yesterday I stained a Cherries Jubilee slightly yellow as the remover contained some kind of conditioning agent (you shake two immiscible layers together before use). Luckily she was baity, and I'm going to keep using her as a guinea pig, and stick to the lab ethanol and acetone I swiped. She will be my first re-hairing project as the entire forelock is missing!

5. Factory curl is almost always salvageable with patience. I have heard so much about people taking straighteners to the ponies that I thought Buttons (my first) was a fluke but I'm so chuffed with my long haired Bow Tie and Waverunner from today. The ponies have less curl but you can still make it look nice - I don't mind if there is a little friz and fly-aways in curls, it's only natural.  My Bow Tie is kind of frizzy in a way but it looks kinda cool like some enormous extravagant wig ha ha. I wish I had done hair before and after pics but I will in future!

6. I have decided my preference is that I don't want to buy ponies that have been treated in the following ways:

1. Boiling
2. Boiling in Oxy clean
3. Hair straightened using heat
4. Bleach
5. Excessive sunfading (Ok to fade unsightly biro, not left for weeks on end).

I'd rather have creamy coloured frizzy ponies until I learn more about how the above treatments affect the vinyl or Nylon hair.

I've had such a good time!

When I get the data cable back for my camera I'll post pics. I have before and after for Parasol, Windy and Gusty. Still havign problems with rust stains around Gusty's tail hole but it's coming together.

Lots of Lovexx

Male ponies - mine is a lesbian separatist herd  :|

Happy Tails - there's something I don't understand here, aren't horses supposed to twirl their tails when they are irritated? Then again, I guess "Cranky Tails Ponies" wouldn't have been a big hit.

Lol

Anything in the Gingerbread pose - exception: SS Shady because I like her as a character
Tootsie pose - exceptions: 7-Tales Bright Eyes because I want to complete the set, Cherries Jubilee because cherries
Moondancer pose

Just wondered what it is about these ponies you're not keen on?

I'm not that into quite a few pony characteristics, my ideal collection would only number about 60. Here are the things that definitely don't float my boat....

First Tooth
Peek a Boo
Beddy Bye Eyes
Teeny Tiny Pose
G1 Peagsus Firefly Pose
Anything wedding themed ponies! Ha!
Brush n Grow
So soft
All Sea Ponies
Pearly
Happy Tails
Flutter
Pocket
Merry-go-round
Fancy Pants
Windy Wing
Sweetheart Sister
Dream Beauties
Glow n Show
Tropical (can't cope with the eyeshadow)
Any in Collector's Pose (weird I know but I collect the babies instead, mainly Euro versions)
Magic Message
Dance and Prance
etc

I also have certain themes that I like and others that I don't. I really like the celestial bodies and weather, music, flowers and cakes but not so much occupations, grooming, celebrations especially weddings.

It's just personal preference at the end of the day.

Thanks so much ladies!

I think I'd like to try to make the neck plug more secure again with some glue, try to glue up the crack where the vinyl split before I put the head back on, what do you think?

I'm worried that the next person to take the head off (probably me having forgotten) might think, "oh great, the head is loose" and try to just pop it straight off but end up splitting the neck plug even more.

If anyone has any thoughts or glue suggestions I'd really appreciate it!

Feeling happy again now

p.s. Wave Runner's head just came off fine and she's making a great recovery

Pony Corral / So happy beheading new ponies for cleaning, until...
« on: June 16, 2013, 11:53:06 AM »
I have bought quite a few grubby looking ponies lately most with only one minor or no permanent flaws so I've really been looking forward to cleaning them! I was having a great time until I noticed that baby Rainribbon had glue residue around her neck and her head was an absolute pain in the neck to get off.  I think someone has already removed her head then stuck it back on with a stronger glue?!! Weirdly, when I finally got it off I noticed that the tail washer was still intact, rusty and nearly bent double! I whipped it out and replaced with cable tie. I have previously had no problems getting heads off with neck plug intact so this one has upset me because it's the first one I've damaged. I tore the neck plug inside about 1/3 of the way around. At some point someone has damaged the neck seal on my Bubbles in this way and when I noticed I was pretty upset because I paid nearly £20 for her thinkign she was NM..

Sooo...

Has anyone else come across sellers sticking heads back on? Why would they do it?
II'd love to know what everyone else thinks. Does anyone only collect ponies if neck is still factory sealed?

What's your view on the cause of cancer spots?xx

Nice work! What a lovely pony. All my ponies turn up looking a bit like your 'before' photo because I refuse to pay over the odds for them... only thing different is I'm not buying them if they have age spots. I just cleaned up Gypsy and she now only has two flaws, a little symbol rust and the one thing all my ponies seem to have, a small green pen mark!! Does any one else find this small green pen mark thing. It's like every time!

Introductions / Re: Hello!
« on: May 26, 2013, 05:50:04 PM »
OK here are two of my new ladies, Tootsie and Buttons. When they arrived I used Listerine and a soft toothbrush to wash them followed by a sponge bath, shampoo and conditioner.

This photo made me notice that Tootsie's head is a more yellow shade of chartreuse than her body! Is this a factory flaw? I could get a bow or scarf to tie around her neck but it's not really bothering me because she is so damn pretty. I love her pose and I'm just pleased she's such a bright colour.  Her tail is pinned into a bun; I'm looking into plastic pins and combs to use with the ponies to avoid danger of rust.

Buttons is still sporting quite a bit of original factory curl so I decided to ignore the frizz and try to preserve it as much as possible after her bath. I used hairpins, then my fingers and gentle heat from a hairdryer, here is the result. noticed the end of her horn might still be a little grubby!

My plan is to paint backgrounds for these ladies and photograph them again soon. Need to pick up my acrylic paints from storage!

Excite!
