Title: ~
Post by: Icecrystalline on August 14, 2013, 10:09:27 AM
Tomorrow? It's A-Level results day, all students get AS (first year) and A2 (2nd year) results tomorrow. It's make or break. Fail and you don't get your perfect uni place, succeed, and have a wonderful time.

I'm freaking out hugely, I'm getting AS results tomorrow, and these will go on my personal statement to the 5 universities I'm applying to, one being Cambridge (Cambridge and Oxford are the two leading universities in the UK, you can apply to one or the other, not both) and I am so worrying.

Please, wish me luck, and if you have them, show me pretty things to take my mind off it, I'm sick with worry and keep getting migraines!

hello

I am here to tell you it is NOT make or break. Please dont open your results with that attitude..... if you dont get the results you want it is not the end of the world. Other paths than the ones you had planned may be the right ones for you. Or you could take a year out  after A levels and re-think things.  You may feel like its the end, but its really not. Your whole life is ahead of you. I hate all this pressure on young people :(

I was rejected from Cambridge, broke my heart over it and ended up at Nottingham. Where I met my husband (also a Cambridge reject LOL) and did a fabulous degree and met the people who would be my friends still 16 years on. I did have a wonderful time, in a well regarded course and I was successful and happy and have a good life now. For a few years, I did intend to apply to do an MA at Cambridge but realised that that was purely to prove something to myself, and I dont feel the need to do that now.

When I was doing my A levels ..... many years ago... Im 36 at the end of this month...... my friend hanged herself because she didnt get "good enough" grades for her course. I will never forget my friend, nor  her funeral which was  the saddest funeral I have ever been to. It really scares me to hear people saying how stressed they are about A level results. Im terrified to hear that someone else has done what my friend did. We will always miss her and think of her every year at this time.

Good luck Im sure you will do well. But if you dont, please dont thinki its the end of all your plans and ambitions. Things will work out. Oh I am worried for you now (hugs). I never want to hear of another situation like my friend's.

Have you got a family member who can be with you when you open you results.

I wish you luck

Which subject would you like to study?

I'm studying at university and so worried at the moment too. I've been so tired because of working that I haven't checked which courses I want this year. And the registration for the courses is on Monday. Wish someone could do the course picks for me and return my books while I'm at work. Why are there no personal trainers for studying? Only for sports?!

What the hell are A levels? Is it like the SAT exam here? I did horrible on the SAT exam because I didnt have the background in math..

New York has something called regents exams in high school and they put such emphasis on these stupid exams claiming that if you do not pass them, you will not get a regents diploma and no 4 year university will accept you. I tested this theory and its utter bullsh*t. I did not get a Regents diploma because I did not take Physics, yet EVERY university I applied to accepted me including one IN New York. I had no intention of every going to the school and only applied to shut my guidance counselor up. It was St John Fischer College in Rochester NY and not only is it a very expensive school, it is also a religious school and I wanted NO part of that.

I got an A in English- amazed. Geography - B, wanted an A, Photography (as expected) - C (I'm not artistic) and worst, Bioloy (was expecting an A) - D. I'm retaking Biology whilst taking the higher level of it next year, plus one of the two geography papers to ensure an overall A. I freaked out earlier, and now I'm calm, and can see the bigger picture, I'm okay again.

Thank you Evie and Mkia! xx

I hope so. As a university I'm applying to do Geography at, and requiring an A/B in another science subject, I worry they'll take one look at my biology and click decline immediately. I just have to hope I am given a chance. I got A* in both my Biology exams at GCSE, and A at both Geography GCSEs, so meh, I hope, and pray they see past this slip up. I've been very ill, and got better over my exams, so maybe they can compensate for that. Here's hoping.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that! I hope your Uni can indeed look past these scores and accept you.

Are you allowed to retake A-levels, or is it a one-shot deal?

Thankfully, I'm able to, since I am just a first year student, but I'm going to be taking 2 Biology A2 exams which are technically, double as hard as AS.... at the same time as I retake my AS. Urgh. 4 Biology exams in the same month. How the heck am I going to remember it all? Oh well, I need to retake, my grade sucked. I'm an A-grade student, so I feel humiliated having a D on my paper.

 Courage, Icey - I hope they can overlook your lousy scores, and even if they don't, from what I know about you I have the impression that you have the determination and the ability to work that it takes to make up for them.

Thank you Mul-ta, that's really sweet of you to say   I have always been told I'm fiercely determined, and I really am. This has made me realise I really need to kick myself harder this year. Shamefully, I thought I had done my best this year, but clearly I haven't, so this time, I'm really going to make up for it. English & Geography grades were great, just one retake (paper 2) and I could have an A overall for Geoggers. Biology, I know I can do better than that. I'm so grateful I'm not alone, my friend also is retaking!

Icey, they are still good grades. Of course there is university in your future!  Talk to your personal tutor.
what university do you have your eye on? Get your personal tutor to write a supporting letter to the university directly, when you submit your UCAS application,  explaining your illness and the fact that the illness may have had an effect on your grades.  Or perhaps they might write that in your reference.

Glad to see you're sorting it out, and good luck with everything!   I remember how stressful it was trying to get into the college I wanted, and I never got to go there but I DID go to college and graduate from a good university!

I want to go to Exeter University. It's one of the top 10 in the country, so I really need to be impressive. I'm certainly not applying to Cambridge anymore, will have to think of a different uni to apply to. I don't want any more humiliation!

Just know that theres always a light at the end of the tunnel.  Things have ways of working out, youll see :)

Thank you, it's that very reason that I'm not going to give up!

I am glad you are feeling better Icey. I do remember how you must feel - even though it was a long time for me (I cried for about 2 weeks solidly when I got my Cambridge rejection letter) and  I did feel humiliated in the interview too :( But hey! Everything worked out really really well for me and I am SURE it will for you as well.

You have great choice in the UK and, importantly, these days all universities are very focused on Student Satisfaction :) So they will be working really hard to make sure your experience is a good one.

Wow. No-one is going to believe this:

My grade is actually considered 'good' for Biology! :dizzy:

I haven't heard one person say there Biology results were anything over an E. One friend who worked 6 hours a day over Easter got an E, another who had paid tuition got an E. I'm almightily impressed I managed to get a grade above them, despite having a grade I would normally be embarrassed by!!
I think the grade boundaries were exceptionally raised this year, I just, can't believe I'm not such a failure after all. Thank the kittens.
