It's not so much that the clay bubbles. It's more like the plastic shrinks in a bit and that pushed some of the clay out in my experience.  But other that using sparsely and smoothing I don't have good advice to give.
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.

I had that happen twice with the first two ponies I customized, though it was all over the head and not just the hair plugs. Like Saralacewing said, just sand and smooth, not much else you can do. Though there may the chance that the clay has reacted to something else on your pony (thats what happened with mine). If you had paint down or glue or something that caused a reaction with the clay you could test things out to figure out what combination of things caused it in order to prevent it next time. But thats only if there was some sort of reaction. Sorry I can't be of more help!

What Sarahlacewing said. That 's one of the main reasons why I use Apoxie Sculpt now.

You could lightly sand it?

I have some similar problems on an old WIP that I never got back to, just out of curiosity and instead of posting up a new topic. What does everyone use to sand?

I use 120, 240 and finish off with 400. I've had this happen numerous times. Sanding it will fix it and to keep it from happening just smooth it down with alcohol before you bake ^.^ should help

could you put tape or removable frisket on the top of the holes prevent it from coming up??? that way when the plastic shrinks it would go down?

There is a good chance those types of items would either melt or react with the clay while heating.

As to Aves, you can order it directly from them or buy on ebay.  It is not sold in stores.
