If you loose interest, what do you do?
« on: February 02, 2012, 05:18:40 PM »
Just wondering, as I have quite a few WIP's on the go, but tend to loose interest at a point, an just cant get back into it. What do others do? How do you get them finished BEFORE starting the millions of ideas you have racing round your head? or is that just me. lol. I get another idea, start it and either it just doesnt go right, or I get another better idea, and then get started on another.
Need a bit more discipline I think, or something? Would love to hear how others battle there brains thru this dilemma!

For me, it depends what the custom is for. If there is no deadline (i.e. it's not for a swap or a commission) then I will break off from it. Generally I hit problems in between customs - I haven't made a pony since the halloween and dragon swaps last year, although I do have a few on the go now for swaps.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a step back, look at what inspired you for this particular pony, and then either run in that direction or take a complete break and do something different.

You might find it helpful to write your ideas down, then there is less urgency to do them because you can't forget.

If you're frequently getting bored of a pony before it's finished, then I'd question whether you're making the designs time consuming and perhaps you need to simplify it for a while, or maybe there are elements of customising such as full body repaints, that you ought to avoid if you're always getting stuck at the same point.

When I run into that point, it's time to take a break from customs for a few days. Set them aside, forget about them completely; last time that happened, I was able to walk back to my work table after 3 days, and figure out what to work on.

On a some-what related subject, I'm geeking online here right now because I don't have the motivation to work on a current project... but I'm going to try to remedy the lack of motivation with caffeine. Just brewed me some...

I put it aside and wait until I wanna keep working on it. Not when I do customs for swaps. But that doesn't happen with swap customs anyways^^

best of luck getting motivated again, you have been given some great advice. Best of luck to mana-maiden also! Hope the caffeine works!

If I get burnt out on a pony, I will work on something different for a bit - this works better if I don't have a deadline, though.  Looking at other people's customs, Pinterest, or other artworks usually puts me back in the mood of doing a pony.
