Title: Gusty bait-brag rescue & slightly alternate re-hair :)
Post by: glitterball on January 13, 2017, 06:47:08 AM
Hello!

I recently acquired a bundle of baits off a certain auction site & was so happy to find the lovely Gusty in the collection; she had the top of her mane chopped off, some dirty marks on her body and a red dot above her eyebrow. Yippee a candidate for a restore!

I pulled off her head, took off her tail and remaining mane with some hemostats (great tool!),  simmered her in a pan of water + oxi, used a toothbrush and white cream cleaner to scrub off the body dirt, dried her and then started the real fun part!

I wanted to use a slightly warmer green to the usual one Gusty has; I looked at her eyes and tried to match-up with what I had - RetroDolls had a green called Parakeet that fitted the bill! Next - instead of the red-orange highlights, I chose a rich pink - called Razzamatazz.

I used the same reroot method that I use for my dolls: an old-fashioned doll needle, thread and plug knotting (no glue required!) just in case I ever get bored and want to change the hair in the future! I like doing it this way because I know that the hair will remain secure if washed, plus I can easily use the original holes for the hair plugs and feel confident that I am not weakening them. Also, I can accurately target the tiny holes with a thinner needle if need be.

Now all I have left to do is to trim and style her new hair! But that is for another day...

The re-root and comparing the colouring with an original Gusty: All that is left is a trip to the hair salon for a trim & tidy:

Anyway, poor Gusty still has that little red spot above her eyebrow - I shall apply spot cream and pop her on my window to see if it will fade... but the weather here is a bit wintery so I think this will be a project for the spring  :)

Wow she looks great with the new colors!
Have to say though - please Please PLEASE do not use any spot cream on her, most (if not all) of the time that ends very badly even if it takes years for it to show up.
I have a NightGlider I received as a gift from my mom a few years back that looked close to minty, but about 6 mos ago bleached spots started appearing where someone at some point in her life had removed pesky spots of one time or another with some kind of cream, while it may seem to be fine short term in the long term it will damage the pony in some way and possibly other ponies that get stored/displayed next to (touching) the treated pony.
Congrats on getting such a beautiful lady though she looks like she will be a beautiful addition to your herd! :D

Lovely colour choice and kudos for glue-free re-rooting!  Have you tried magic eraser on that spot at all?  I agree with TwistedRiver that spot cream isn't seen as a good idea these days.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments!   :relaxed:

Ooh thanks for the warning Artemesia Floc and TwistedRiver re: the spot cream! Eeek!

Well, the wee spot is barely 1mm - I will wipe it clean now & rely on the sun to fade it ;) good thing that she is already a white pony and I do keep my ponies in such a way that they do not touch each other, I always worry about plastic contamination & keep outfits, shoes, saddles etc off my ponies for that exact reason (colour seepage etc).  :thumb:

I like the rehair matching the eyes!

I'm glad she was saved from the spot cream! I wonder, did you try a little acetone on the spot? If you apply acetone for an extended period, it can eat at the plastic, but it it has otherwise been useful and safe in my experiences. It will take of just about anything on the surface (including lovely paint, so careful). If it doesn't remove it, it is most likely ingrained in the plastic or part of the plastic and then may benefit from sunbathing if anything.
