Title: Common Ponies HTF in Good Condition?
Post by: babystarz on February 19, 2012, 12:41:42 PM
Are there any ponies you think are hard to find in decent shape, even if there are a lot of them floating around?

I'm having a rough time finding a Baby Puddles or Peeks that isn't in really bad shape. They all seem to have ingrained dirt galore and permanently ruined frizzy/cut hair. I was actually looking for them when I was collecting a few years ago too, and I had this problem even back then. Baby Bunkie often has the same bad hair, although I've seen a few Bunkies with great, silky hair. I've never spotted Puddles or Peeks with good hair except for MIB. I haven't had this problem with any of the other twin sets. I wonder if the issue is just that purple hair and its inability to hold up to playing with the ponies?

So softs! Ug. Finding them with good flocking is pain, but I only need 3 more for a complete first edition set :)

Oh yes, even the great ones usually have flocking missing on their eartips and toes :P Which 3 are you still looking for?

I dont think its difficult to find Party Time without regrind.....its impossible! Such a pony does not exist and I am sure they all came out their boxes with regrind already starting!

tootise! I never realized how often her head and body mismatch and her lollipops always are faded to white!
The 82s (cotton candy etc) are always pretty manky as well with lots of ingrained dirt etc

Ah yes, any pony with that maddening fading pink hair is hard to find mint. I'm having problems finding a TAF Love Melody for the same reason. And I hear you on Lemon Drop too. Bowtie is often the same way I think.

i read this and got pleased for a second because the Tootsie i'm selling has unfaded pink lollypops and perfectly matched head/body and i could help you out... but then i remembered that she has a symbol scuff :( damnnn

To add to the list, Gingerbread is hard to find in good condition.

I'll second or third regrind-free Party Time and especially Cloud Puff.  My Puddles and Peeks have frizzy hair but their thrift store finds so I'm not surprised.

Isn't 4 Speed another one that has cancer issues?  I don't think mine does but he does have a forelock cut (I still love him.)

I have issues finding mint Glory, Moondancer and their babies.  There always seems to be glitter loss and/or yellowing.

i actually have an almost perfect gingerbread, no age spots, but her body is more cream colored (i did sunfade her and shes much lighter now)

anyway... starflower, confetti, pinwheel, tickle and trickes without symbol rust or madd cancer seems impossible to find!
i also cant seem to find a g3 baby romperooni without frizzy hair!

Hmph   I have a lovely Tootsie - pink lollipops, matching head and body, great mane... but her tail is dry! Can't win, eh?  ;)

I have a Glory I'd ultimately like to upgrade, but as Scarletjul said, where art thou one with perfect, glittery symbols! Mine would be a treasure otherwise!

I think the brother ponies in general seem to re really prone to cancer. We know Chief is, Barnacle definitely is, and the others boys I've had, Tex and Quarterback, had cancer as well. It must be a boy thing ;)

Starshine for sure--just sold a gorgeous one that I was startled to find in a lot I bought.  Starshine and Majesty are prone to "brown head syndrome," though Starshine also turns brown all over.  She's also the only Year 2 Rainbow that seems prone to symbol rust.

Confetti seems nearly impossible to find bright white without bleeding symbols.

Mint Lemon Drops are indeed are to find!  I finally found a nearly mint one.

Sunbeam is quite common but especially prone to glitter loss.  She always comes up in lots with barely-there symbols.

Post by: plushroo on February 19, 2012, 05:38:09 PM
For me it's been Sunbeam and Glory with good glitter symbols. I have got a couple of TE Party times with minor to almost no regrind though one does have a lighter colored head. It's difficult, but not entirely impossible to find ponies with no bad flaws. I also have got a SS Twilight and MGR flower bouquet still with pink hair.

I think its hard to find SS taffy with flocking. I do have one but I had to deflock her the flocking was almost gone on her body. :( I also agree on Confetti and Trickles with 0 mold or cancer. Ugh and my poor TE Quackers has turned light brown.

Cherry Treats who's not discoloured, I don't know that I've seen one.  It also took me forever to get a Firefly and Sprinkles who were in VG condition.  For years every one I got had terrible hair and mold.

I "may" have a Partytime without regrind I'm gonna check later on. I think Gingerbread is hard to find even MOC her pink strip was completely gone. Plus a lot are discoloured, have age spots and cancer

Lol...I want pictures of these Party Times....make me a believer!!! a PT without regrind is like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot...you kinda want to believe but are reasonably certain its a myth...

I had one about 6 months ago and I thought "yes" this is her...the one, the only PT with no regrind...she looked perfect even the pink in her hair hadnt faded...then I stupidly put her under a daylight lamp...and yup hidden there in the odd nook and cranny the evil starting signs of regrind...sigh....I have given up...

Poor old Party Time. I actually thought I just got a really regrind-y one, I had no idea it was such a common thing for the poor girl. I guess I'll learn all these things as time goes on and the ponies accumulate further. Thankfully the regrind doesn't look TOO obvious on her (at least on mine) from distance and most of the worst of it is covered by her hair, so she still displays well enough amongst my other TEs. I guess I'll keeping my eyes out for a future upgrade though.

What I was actually really surprised about is that Sweet Stuff is apparently prone to cancer! I have 2 and even though one is hard as a rock (she would HURT if she was thrown at you), neither have any visible cancer that I can make out.

I have found awful ingrained dirt seems to be a given on the flat foots (82's?). Every one I've gotten has had horrible, nearly-impossible-to-shift ingrained dirt, ranging from "played with in the backyard once or twice" through to "must have been buried for 20 years"

*snuzzles her childhood Sweet Stuff*

For me, it's the SS ponies that aren't going bald in some area. I'd also like to find the 10th Anniversary pony that still looked white and didn't have manky hair (one day...).

I gave up finding a really white Cherry Treats long ago. The best one I've found still looks like an off-white  color.

Twist, Surprise and Cherries Jubilee.

Most of mine have some very minor wear around the feet, but most has good ears and one or two have no loss at all. I just wo a crumpet and taffy in an auction- I'm prying they have decent flocking. I have an angel but her's is bad- too bad, she's my favorite XD

I'm not an expert but I'm thinking the only way you can get a really nice so-soft (no missing flocking or not dirty) would probably be if it's MIP/MIB.  Overtime, and if the pony was played with a lot I think the flocking does disappear.

Like I said, not an expert. ;)

Lickety Split!  I have two and both are not nice...  Same with SS Cherries Jubilee and NSS Cherries Jubilee, it's just...  argh!  So difficult to find nice ones!

And also I have PT withour regrind =X  But with forelock cut =P

Thanks for the tootise offers, gee it sounds like she is common in good condition... it must be a thing me and her have going on lol. Anyhow I am not looking for her anymore as I have falling for the uk exclusives and have vowed that if a pony is not on display then I cant have it as I have just cleared out about 5 boxes full of hoarded ponies lol

I never knew barny was prone to cancer, I must have got luck on mine : ) Oh and majesty is brown to a browning head? Its funny you said that as I have 2... on is browning everywhere the other has the most whitest head I have ever seen.. but there is one cancer spot in the middle of her cheek, her body is brown thou.

I just read lucky is prone to cancer, I second that with a boy with cancer

Steamer is a pain to find to he either has regrind or white hair

I argee with these ponies however some of my childhood ponies have ingrained dirt (lemondrop, moondancer, suprise) and I never took them outside ever and I am sure my hands were never covered in dirt lol. I think they got the ingrained dirt from general dust?

For me it was Pretty Beat and G1 Applejack clean and at fair prices.

I was about ready to rip my hair out before I got the most beautiful Pretty Beat from Maycrestmom.

Literally months and months of stalking ebay and only finding dirty over priced Pretty Beats.
So glad that I have my lovely now. :3

Applejack was a pain too, even now she's a bit expensive on ebay!
I got my beautiful pretty much mint (in my opinion) Aj from a seller here along with 11 other beautiful ponies for cheaper than what most of the ebay ponies were going for. Literally blew my mind.

G1 Minty is a pain to find without cancer, as is TE Gingerbread (although I've got a mint cancer-free one :accomplished: ) and TE Sweetstuff , Partytime and Galaxy without regrind (not impossible cos I have those too!) .. oh and the biggest toughie for me to find is BB 4speed/Trucker without cancer :yikes:
I'd love to find a NSS Cupcake without cancer too ... though she isnt a common pony, so I guess I might have to just put up with it

Sea ponies!  I have such a hard time finding mold free sea ponies.  You almost have to find ones that weren't played with in the bath.

I thought I had a regrind free party time, but I organised my G1s for Gazzy's set completer swap, and it's started =(  A mint Gingerbread is a grail of mine.  I have 2, but I'm waiting until summer to see if I can sunfade them.  Her pink hair stripe must have been REALLY bad, because I always remember her having white hair.  It was only when I came here, after a decade of collecting, that I realised it was supposed to be pink.  I can't find sugarberry with nice hair, or 4-speed, tickles, trickles and confetti without cancer either.

I have a really nice CJ and Baby glory for sale, for those of you who said you can't find them.  I have puddles and peeks too, but their hair was so bad that they've been rehaired with G1 hair.

I do have Cloud puff MIB, with no regrind yet, and a NM Glory at least.  I also met someone through a friend who had outgrown playing with ponies (still waiting for this to happen, lol) and only used her childhood ponies for photo shoots.  She sold me some of them, and they were the mintiest ponies I have EVER seen.  So softs with no flocking missing at all, perfect MM ponies, all with unfaded hair and original curls.  *drools*

regrind is pink spots (really common on steamer and lady flutter). It happened when hasbro melted down unused plastics and added them to a new batch of plastic being made (some think like that I am sure someone could explain it better).

For me I think it's hard to find a nice white Gusty. All the ones I've seen so far had problems. And also so soft ponies with nice flocking!

We use the regrind term a little incorrectly to be honest.

Regrind is essentially recycled plastic...it is "ground up" plastic which is then used again to mould into a new shape...the pink splotches [they can actually be other colours, yellows are also popular] is when the ground together plastic [bearing in mind that regrind will be made of lots of different polycarbonates from a selection of sources and ages] is starting to break down a little, not separating but simply deciding it doesnt want to completely bond together any more, In addition different plastics within a regrind mix may degrade at different speeds or not hold colour due to differing age, source, the amount of times it has been part of a regrind mix or if they have different cure dates. So we call it "regrind" when we see this break down of plastic on ponies as a kind of generic term
