Title: collecting ponies you didn't mean to collect.
Post by: kingluke on April 04, 2019, 02:36:13 AM
I basically keep all the g1 ponies I don't already have.

It just so happens that I now own 3 first tooth baby ponies without me wanting to actively buy or collect them.
I'm happy I have them tho.

Did this ever happen to you? If so what line was it? And what generation? Was it even ponies?

I would love to hear from you :)

greetings,

Luke

I happened to have a few G4s since they came up because they were gifts from friends and family. I also have 3 additional G4s now because my niece doesn't want them anymore.
Same thing with my, like three G3.5 and giant G3.5 plushie. They were my niece's.

That's kinda sad, I though she liked ponies, she used to be quite invested when she saw me restore mines, she even followed me by wanting to clean hers at the same time. But hey, she's an early teenager now, our mind isn't the wisest at that age. I keep them in good condition and ready to give her back in case she changes her mind in a few years. ^^ I wouldn't want her to feel bad that she abandoned them. I've read many collector telling how sad they were from not having their childhood ponies from some reason or another, so I'm preventing that from happening to my niece.

That's so kind of you :) Who knows, maybe someday.

G2...G3...G4 :)

Especially G4, because with the other two I did start out buying some then stopped. With G4 I never meant to collect them at all, but yeah. I have around 90 now, so I guess that's a collection....

G2 and G3.5 for me! I still have very small collections of both right now, but once I found them in person I kind of fell in love.

G3.5 was my most recent find and I think I'll actually buy a couple more. I told myself no for so many years but actually having them in hand really surprised me. They're actually fun! The ones I have all have unique hairstyles, which I never knew about them! After a bath I could really see their charm.

I've had my G2s for a while now. I found a handful of them at Goodwill quite a few years back and realized they're actually really pretty, despite their kind of odd shape! The eye gems really sold me because, hey, I'm a huge sucker for anything sparkly. :P The only reason I haven't bought more is because they're pretty hard to come by in the wild. I may cave and buy a few online at some point.

Nope.
I don't keep what I don't want.

Well, with me I've stumbled upon (IRL) like 4 I didn't want but grabbed, first Royalette (Now Resculette) then large styling Shining Armour, Blushie, Crystal Empire Cadence then Crystal Empire Applejack.

I've however bought a few online that I didn't set out to buy including, Chocolate Chipper MIB, Crystal Lace MIB, Twinkle Hope, Wildflower, Moondream, Fizzy, Ringlet and Royalette.

Happy Tails. They just kept happening. I had Tabby from my childhood collection then the rest kept showing up in random local lots... lol. That and the rice krispies baby. Can't get away from her; I think I have at least a dozen right now.

Ponies that weren't on my wishlist:

G1:
Bunny Hop
Baby Drummer (Only because I thought I couldn't get him for under $20. He was a surprise gift from my boyfriend.)
Wigwam
TLS Minty
Curlylocks
Paradise
Hula Hula-(At the time I didn't like the Tropical set)
Genie-(She was a lovely surprise gift from a friend.)
Twilight (unicorn)
Moonstone
Sea Light
Yum Yum (I didn't like her at the time.)

G3s:
Blushie
Loop-de-la
Star Catcher
Sweetie belle (My daughter never liked her much and was going to give her to charity. I took her.)

G4: I'm still not crazy about this gen, it took me a loooong time to like them enough to want some.

Merry May
Pretzel (My daughter wanted the pearlies, but changed her mind after I bought one of the 2 packs, she ended up growing on me. Though I didn't like her at first.)
Princess Luna (I wanted the water cutie one and ended up with the sparkle bright.)
Mer-Rainbowdash (I was going to get her to customize, but she's got  thick hair and a nice pearly sheen, I grabbed a different mer-rd to customize instead.)
Mer-Fluttershy-(I dislike the mane suxx. But she's one of the only two who don't annoy me. Plus her hair is a pretty shade of pink.)

I collect all gens, but I didn't intend to collect G3 originally. Kind of happened.
Now I try to avoid bringing G4 Mane 6 ponies in but it's becoming increasingly hard.

G1 babies.
I wasn't keen on them at first, simply because they're just smaller versions of the adult ponies, rather than proportioned like real foals. That bugged me a bit, though I can't really imagine them looking too great with the long legs and skinny faces...
Then I found a bag of them in a charity shop and bought them, and a few months later another bag appeared and I bought that too. I have six now and have become a big fan.

Hmm... not really? I got into ponies via FiM so started out collecting just G4 but that time was very short lived, didn't take long at all for me to decide to collect all generations. Basically ever since my plan has been to buy nearly all ponies or pony merchandise I find while thrifting, unless they're definitely overpriced, which doesn't happen too often. There's not a single pony or piece of official MLP merchandise that I don't want in my collection, there's only ones I want to actively seek out through buying them online (or in the case of new ponies, buying in stores), and ones that I would just get via thrifting or in lots.

This is why I always select "want" on every Pony of the Day poll for ponies I don't already have. No such thing as a pony I would pass up or plan on passing up and then deciding to keep. :)

G3 McDonald's ponies. I like them and think they are cute. But recently I finally had the time to sort through some boxes of random ponies and at the end of it all I had a gallon ice cream bucket and shoe box full of 'em. ^^; Instead of having one of each like I intended, they've grown into their own sub-collection in my G3's.

G3 ponies... They just, I don't know, appeared on my shelf. And now I have placed them IN FRONT OF MY G1'S!! They are taking over but I still don't admit collecting them. I've been such a G1 and only G1-person for sooo long..

Yeah, Mane 6. :P You have to buy them if you want the packaged non-M6 pony a lot of the time. "You can just buy it by itself on eBay later" would be an option if non-Mane6 ponies didn't go for thirty, fourty, fifty dollars...

Other than that, no. I usually only buy what I want. I don't buy just to have something or to have a complete set. Last year I bought a lot with the rare G3.5 Pinkie that I wanted, and it came with a couple Sweetie Belles. (I hate calling a G3.5 "rare" but that's what she is compared to the others)

I didn't, it wasn't me. And if anyone says it was then I will deny it to the hilt.

(Basically all the G3's on my shelf - I was never going to collect them. Definitely not.)

I would say G4s and G3s I wasnt really out to collect them just the G1s. Now I have so many I need to weed through. :/

I have a couple g1 sets I wasn't planning on collecting (at least not yet, I tend to focus a few sets before moving on to the next few), but things happened and I got one or two ponies from it and so had to put it on my focus list, because I collect in sets. The sweetberry ponies is one of those sets, and it's not that I don't like the set, I was just planning on waiting with it, because I have other sets to finish xD

I have this with other gens too (except g4, I don't collect them), not that I collect in sets, but sometimes I get ponies one way or another that i didn't think I'd ever buy but then I end up loving them in person XD

Takara Ponies for me. Originally I collect(ed) G1 that I like, mostly that my friends had when I was a child and others that I like from this generation, so my collection is pretty complete. When I got aware of the Takara Ponies I just wanted to have 1 just because I love Japan and the ponies are just very cute. And actually? I have 6 original adults and only miss the last 2 ones. So a very expensive drift to another collection side.

My plan here was to get hold of as much the ponies with rabbit and strawberry symbols which have not gonned as planed as there been very few rabbit and strawberry ponies added to my herd

Mine was so softs, because I'm big on restoration but keeping original (so no rehairing or repainting, just cleaning and styling to factory basically) and you really can't do that with so softs, they're more of a deflock or nothing kind of deal. But I got a couple of big lots with some nice ones, and now I collect them? But I'm kinda fussy, I like them nicer than my average fixer-upper-er ponies. Usually the bargain hunt and then the fix is the fun, but with so softs it's a different criteria. I'm a so soft snob, haha!

G4s. I thought I would only end up with a few but now there are many that somehow multiplied when I wasn't looking. Also the movie baby sea ponies. I thought I'd end up with just 2 but now I have 16 :wow:

G2s.
When I see a G2 I need to rescue it and make it look shiny again. Starting collecting was like this:
1 - I only want my G1 childhood wishes
2 - I want more G1s
3 - oh, there is a new MLP! Get some of them.
4 - G3s have so much vatiety! Need them.
5 - G2s are growing on me. Need to rehair all these poor fleamarket beauties.

Now I consider my G2s not really a collection. More of a shelter situation

Yes, because I have a hard time not buying a decent G1 when I see one if I don't have it. This one dealer at a swap meet I occasionally go to every few months seems to have at least a few G1's every time I go. So even though I am not looking for the specific ponies that I am buying per say I have a hard time leaving a decent looking G1 behind if I don't already have it.

I don't like boy ponies.  At all.  I don't collect them.  At all.  However,  seem to have ended up with a few.  I got Ice Crystal in a *insane* lot once.  I ended up with a complete Barnacle, again in a lot.  And two MIB Playtime Baby Brothers have somehow entered this house.  One I won in a raffle, the other was....from a crazy lot.

As for other ponies, I have gone from absolutely hating certain ponies to actively liking them, if not loving them.  I hated Dance 'n Prance ponies from the moment I saw them as a child.  For years I thought they were stupid at best, and at worst slightly offensive(vibrating ponies, complete with tacky earrings, a boa, and a "come and get some" twirling tail....). Then I saw one in action at a ponymeet, and it was the funniest thing I ever saw.  So now I have the full set - complete with all accessories, and all 100% working.  I didn't much like the Teeny Tiny Babies, and then one day I looked at them again, and now I love 'em.  Same with Fancy Pants.

I didn't like that pregnant UK Mummy pony, but I was on a UK kick for a while, and her price was going up, so I figured I better get one soon before I got priced out of the market.  I liked the babies, if not the mother, and someone had a completely functional one with both babies for trade.  So I did it.  I got it in the mail, "loaded" in a baby, and tried the mechanism to test it out.

It was the best thing I ever saw.  EVER.   And now I love my set.

Of course, the #1 "I can't stand them...now I love them" moment was with the G2s.  I was collecting when they came out, and I was pretty firmly on the "these are pretty fugly" side.  Then a friend of mine went to Europe for 2 months.  She kept emailing me "I found ponies!".  Oh, I was excited!  She was in Spain!  She was in Italy!  She was in the UK!  She was in Greece!  Oh the things she could have found!  Baby Mintys and piggy ponies danced in my dreams for weeks.

Then the boxes started to come in.  All G2 babies.  Well, I'm not one to refuse a well meaning friend's gifts.  I opened them, and started to get a really good look at them.  The accessories were super cute(always a plus with me).  The ponies were pretty cute too.  The babies were tiny(another plus), and they really started to grow on me.

A year later *I* went to Europe for a class.  I came back with every G2 I could lay my hands on.  I just completed my G2 collection(every pony and playset, complete with all accessories and backcard) a week ago.

G3, especially pink ponies. I rescue them from the flea market but G3s don't sell terribly well so I often end up getting attached.

Sweetheart Sisters and Beddy Bye Eye Babies. I don't mind the SH Sisters but I never set out to collect them. I have 3 from my childhood (1 is mine, 2 were my sisters) but I have found so many at thrift stores that I have completed several sets and have doubles! I've also found most of the BBE Babies even though I don't love them. I just can't leave any G1 behind.

I also have a huge amount of G3's now even though I don't actively collect them. But I keep them in case I decide to collect them one day. I'd be pretty upset with myself if I got rid of them and then decided I wanted them later.
