What yarn brand do you use for PP?
« on: April 02, 2016, 02:29:46 PM »
Ok question for those doing perfume puff rehairs. I rehair all my ponies that stay with me and thought a few puffs would be fun. I'm running into issues though.

The one on the right I did for my girlfriend at Christmas and used Lion Brand which seems to be the most common and cheaper option. I get a few inches then the length and while in a baby that seems fine adults not so much. I used the Bernart Mega bulky on Tiffany and got the length and puffy hair I wanted. Unfortunately the colors available are only the dark wintry colors.

Sorry if they are upside down. Tinypic is being a pain.

I know tons of people use Lion Brand, but I've tried on and off for the lasts few years without good results. I need a yarn that will give more length and a variety of colors. My stores I can shop at here are limited and I hate buying blindly online. Is there a brand that has worked well for others?

I do rehair some in mohair and that's an option, but it's very pricey even when I clean and dye the mohair myself. Besides I like the option of using the plastic acrylic yarn over animal fibers. Thanks!

I have no idea as the only thing I've ever used is wool, but I'll bump this over to Customs for you, maybe you'll get more answers from our experienced customizers. :)

Thank you! Wool yarn is what you use? Does it break easily or stay pretty long? I wouldn't be opposed to suing one would just have to find one in person to touch as I'm allergic to some.

I use a brand called... Red Heart I think. I will have to check if I remember the name correctly.

Bumping this up for you as I'd also like to know what people use. Got some baits that could use a rehair and a PP style rehair sounds fun!

Great topic!  I've been wondering this for a while, but haven't been brave enough to try a PP rehair yet.  I hope someone gives you more help.  I hadn't even thought of the brand differences in yarn that might make them go well, or not-so-well.

Thank you, brightberry, for my lovely avi.

I've used Caron Simply Soft- It comes in lots of good colors and is a little higher quality than Red Heart but still a little on the cheaper side.

I remember a while ago someone had listed the specifics you need for it... god it was ages ago tho. I remember for sure you need "worsted weight". Has something to do with the fiber length i think.

Not yarn, wool roving intended for needle felting. It doesn't take brushing well but for customs that are for display only it works fine. I root it thickly and brush it when I'm done - at that point about 1/3 comes off. :D So there is waste, and of course there is the allergy issue which is downside. Wool yarn does not work at all, I believe, for that you need synthetic fibres.

Here's a couple of examples:

I haven't used yarn for ponies but I do have a project that is on hold for rehairing a barbie dog with yarn hair. I used Caron Simply Soft (When I looked up a tutorial for making furre suit tails or something the person said avoid red heart. it really is a poor quality yarn and feels terrible to me)

Thanks! One of the topics mentioned the Bernart baby blanket material and another mentioned the Bernart satin. I'll try them and see what happens.
I've been using Lion Heart with smaller plugs coming out and having the thicker acrylic ones and then also the heavy acrylic Bernart. I thought fluffy would be better as these other two types mentioned are thinner and very fine feeling to me, but the results there look neat so I'll buy some and try them.

I don't think I should use any animal fibers though. I like the way yours look griffin but I know when washing and dying the mohair I have to keep gloves on at all times in handling it and even then I can break out. It would be awful or to be able to touch my own ponies. >_<
