To de-box or not to de-box?
« on: June 26, 2012, 04:32:45 PM »
Today I got Raritys' Carousel Boutique with Sweetie Swirl as a gift and I absolutely love it. However on the front of the box it looks like something has splashed all over it. There's milky white dots (sorta see-through though) all over the plastic. I tried with every chemical I got to clean it off but it's there to stay :< Not even scraping at it with my nails seems to work.

So, beeing the kind of collector who wants to keep everything as mint as possible and preferibly in it's original boxes, I'm facing a dilema here :P

Should I keep it in the box despite the splash marks on it or just de-box the whole thing and set it up as the adorable playset it is?

What do you guys usually do with your new store-bought ponies? Keep them in their original package or open them? Guessing it will affect the value of them in the future or not? Not that I care about their value or ever will since I never plan on selling any of my beloved ponies , but still :P
Thoughts, opinions, ideas?

It really depends on you. I de-box most of my things. I don't even have any boxed ponies, but I have a few boxed/bagged Pokémon.

I have a hard time resisting the temptation to touch my collectibles. Ha ha! I also don't like damaged boxes, so there's that too. You need to decide what you're okay with. :)

You could always throw it on ebay, and use the money from selling it to purchase a new one?

It depends. I open G3.5s and G4s. As for G1, G2, and G3, it depends on the box's condition. If it's severly torn, or has something spilled all over it, I'd open it. If it has a tiny tear or a splash of something, I'd keep it boxed. You could always return it and get another.

I'd open it! If the box is going to annoy you like it is.

Personally, I love to de-box my new ponies because I love to brush their hair and maybe play with them a bit
...which is why I have to buy older gens loose.

At the moment my playsets are stored in their boxes but only 'cause I don't have room to set them up yet  Long story short, it's absolutely up to you and what you're happy with.

Completely a personal choice...but for G4s...I open them! Its not devaluing them at this stage as most ponies are reasonably easy to come by. Or as someone else suggests, pop them on ebay and then use the money to buy yourself a new set which doesnt have the same isses!

De-Box. Even if you're going to store it, the toy has batteries in it. Leaving batteries in toys for long unused periods is bad news. Seriously, battery acid can damage the toy's electronics and plastic, and these cheap batteries actually corrode and leak acid a few years down the road. Best to debox it and remove the batteries.

I was actually just thinking about that aswell the other day and was wondering if maybe I should open the MLP items that have batteries in them at least O.o So I totally will now :P Rather that than having them ruined by the batteries.

As for this specific case, since I know the splashmarks will annoy the heck out of me, I think I'll open it :P The box is not really mint anymore due to that so might aswell open it XD
And I don't really wanna trade it or sell it since it was a gift, would make me feel so guilty

The only 4 ponies that I've never opened , are my mail order G3s (2 sun shimmers, 2 love wishes).

:lol:I love styling hair, and playing with them to take pictures  :P
So, whatever you feel is right, I think, as long as you keep all of the accessories and keep them in good condition, it will still be worth a lot in the future.

That was a great point about the batteries.  I hadn't thought of that before.

Yep, I am going to have to say debox, too.  I have this set and it is way too much fun putting little animal friends and ponies all over the carousel and making ponies wear the little food accessories it comes with.
