Cleaning the inside of a pony that is 100% covered in rust
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:35:47 PM »
I'm prepping a custom and the entire inside of her body is orange from rust. I've tried scrubbing, but it doesn't do much. Is there something I can soak the pony in that will take the rust off? Since it's a custom, I'm not concerned with chemicals damaging colors, symbols, ect.

I'm hesitant to just start trying something since I've never used chemicals harsher than hand soap on ponies before. Thanks for your help!

I'm a noob at this (I've just started to clean ponies myself), but whitening toothpaste works quite well. I haven't encountered a pony with THAT much rust though. I know there's also something called Rust Remover.

Don't use rust remover, it may eat the plastic, it eats metal. I would put some baking soda inside the pony and a little water and cover the tail and neck holes and shake. Or put baking soda and vingar in it like a volcano but not enough to bubble over and then cover and shake.

I've dealt with plenty of tail rust and toothpaste works great. This is full body rust LOL

I will try baking soda. Thanks!!

the way i clean rusty residue from the inside of ponies is I fill the pony up with water, add some toothpaste and shake like crazy (while covering the tail hole obviously). Then I let them stay for a bit and afterwards clean them with a toothbrush inside while rinsing the paste.

It has worked so far although I haven't had to deal with that magnitude of rust. but the principle works, so I guess you just might need more tries to get it all out.

basically, just let the paste stay for a while and work its magic ^^

For really really bad ponies, I've had success with diluted bleach, about 50/50 water/bleach, that is just on plastic, not hair, and just inside as I don't know how symbols etc would like this :)

I have only ever tried it on ponies which I havent been overly concerned about regarding symbols but I have found an internal acetone wash followed by toothpaste works...a couple of leg fulls of acetone in pony, cover head and tail holes and then shoogle vigorously....empty out and repeat a couple of times...this should get most of the pieces out...but then scrub with a toothbrush and toothpaste and hopefully the acetone has loosened everything enough

Good luck!

This! :D Works wonders, and if it's a bait pony anyway it can't do any harm.

boiling up some water with some oxyclean in it usually works really good for loosening up anything nasty inside the pony. I let them soak real good, grab some rubber gloves and a tooth brush and scrub.

I do the whole scrubbing with a toothbrush and whitening toothpaste thing. For the legs and harder-to-reach areas like horns and ears, I smother a cotton ball with toothpaste and use a hemostat to grip it and get it into the areas that a toothbrush can't quite get. Works pretty well :)

Thanks guys!! I've got tons of great suggestions :D If I happen to miss a speck or two, the rust won't spread will it? Obviously the rusty washer and clamp are gone now and I'll have something non-metallic to hold the custom's new tail in place.

No the rust wont actually spread - it would only do this if their was metal to corrode. However, what it may do is stain through the plastic - but if you do a couple of acetone rinses and a good scrub hopefully you ll get 99.9999% of it and any speck left will be too tiny to cause any issues.

You know we need before and after pics right?
