Because I knit, & Black Curtains wants to start knitting, I made this thread (pun intended) so we can share our yarns about woolcraft. Crocheters also welcome here. I'm currently working on my first circular knit, which is also my first ribbing. It's going to be another tail-skirt for Bakana, so yaiy for that!!!
-
Oh, I don't have my supplies yet ^^;
The project I mentioned in the other thread was not a kitting project, sorry if it came off that way!
edit: I hate to have to put my mod hat on, but this thread would be better suited to Arts & Crafts. Especially if we're going to show off our projects :) I think any type of knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning etc. can go here too :)
-
Cool. I made it so we don't clog Slice Of Life.
-
Yes, that's fine :)
Have you ever bought raw wool and cleaned and dyed it yourself? That's something I've been thinking of doing. Raw wool is really cheap. I can't spin it into yarn but I was thinking of using it for my needle felting.
-
Nope. Don't like the feel of it (folks live on a croft & we've had sheep there so I know the feel of it). Big fan of acrylic yarns though
-
Ah, okay! I try to use all natural in my crafts using fiber. The yarn that was suggested to use as a beginner knitter is a wool/polyester, so it will be my first time using that type of yarn.
Hopefully, I will have money in my account this coming week so i can buy my supplies :)
-
Well, I don't think I'll be able to get my kitting supplies this month :(
-
Saw that xxx
My bog project is taking a while to do & I had to get a second ball as it will need to be longer. I work on it a little each day, just getting it done, because a couple of rounds is better than no rounds.
Meanwhile I have other needles & other projects, including small simple ones.
-
ooh woolcrafting! I do a ton of yarn/woolcrafting. (I even run a knitting podcast xD ) I knit, sometimes crochet, spin, design patterns...
I'm about to cast on for a cowl that I'll be pattern testing, for which I dyed the yarn.
BC - raw wool is great, but you want to look at what kind of use you want to get out of it. not all wool is suitable for crafting (and some are for some crafts, but not for others). You'll also want to clean it thoroughly before dying it. Dying is so much fun though!

OOO that sounds interesting Shaiyeh!!! I had a feeling there were more than two people who'd be interested!!!
-
Welcome Shaiyeh! A knitting podcast? Sounds fun!
Thanks for the tips about the wool :) I would look for needle felting wool. I know someone who write a book about cleaning and dying wool too :)
-
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0V3XRLZDizvir4cVlABWaQ <- Linky :) I post the podcast, sewing tutorials, art and bujo :)
That's awesome, I'm excited to see the wool when you do get it ^-^
(but also, why not spinning? Spinning is SO much fun!!)
-
I haven't looked into spinning! I have limited space and my arts and crafts stuff is already overflowing XD
Also, omg look at you! You look awesome :D
-
spinning is greatttt, I will always enable spinning if I can. a drop spindle takes up no more space than a paintbrush... ;) and if you've already got wool... xD Sorry! I just love spinning so much haha.
awhh thanks :lovey:
-
Really? Hmm. I'll look into it.
-
You're going for complex stuff Shaiyeh!!!
-
do it! Look up turkish spindles, they are tiny and even collapse to be even tinier ^-^
I have been making  cute granny squares  today, because Valentine's xD
Happy heart day, everyone! :lovey:

Those are lovely!
-
So cute!!!
-
I looked into spinning and I think I don't need to add another thing to my list right now  As it is I've been neglecting needle felting and I still haven't started learning to knit since all my stuff came. Maybe I should make a schedule for myself and select days to do certain things.
-
Aster lost all her wool puffs so I made her some more the other night.
I still haven't revisited the tutorial for knitting since I got all my supplies. I'm really into ponies at the moment.

Still working on the round project, but in the meantime have my finished one. I hope it gets your seal of approval!!!
-
That's so cute!
-
I got some lovely rainbow locks to make a rainbow sheep! There's probably enough here for a big sheep and a little one. I also got some nice looooong white locks and beautiful black locks. I want to make a Valais Blacknose sheep and want to use the real sheep's wool, so that's on the way too :) It's coming from Switzerland!

Looking forward to it!!!
-
Awhhh I was very lucky to pet some Valais Blacknose sheep a couple weeks ago. they're SO cute! I can't wait to see the one you're making ;3;
Also those rainbow locks are gorgeous!

I am also working with wool right now. I bought this very MLP merino, which I'm currently spinning. Hoping to manage to keep the colours' integrity. I'll update when it's done :3

Awwww! They're so adorable! I love them  Is their wool soft? It looks soft. The only sheep I've ever pet had rough wool.
Nice! It reminds me of cotton candy  I'm excited to see the result!
-
I finished the big project!!!

Bakana's new tail-skirt!!! As you can see it tapers with her body & has ribbing at both ends with a stretchy cast-off. Lower rib 80 stitches, upper 120 stitches. Aran yarn on 4mm circular needles
-
Wow, great job! I love that you make things for your plushies
-
I'm having another go at crochet too!!! Turns out I was using the wrong size hook!!! Changed that over & having a blast!!!
-
I found a Youtuber called Hooked By Robin & she has a pattern for stuffed hearts!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA2V3vxRPeE
Yep I made one!!!

It has BAKANA <3 S U on it
-
So cute!
-
I put it inside her (with a bit more fill) like a Build-A-Bear heart xxx Got more meaning as I made it myself & added a personal touch xxx
-
Aw, that's so sweet
-
My Valais Blacknose wool arrived! I bought more than I thought  It was listed by grams not ounces but I thought I'd used a converter calculator. Well, anyway, I have lot!

And here's the Teeswater locks I bought before that. It's hard to find jet black wool, at least on Etsy from the US. The UK has a lot of wools in different natural colors but the shipping is ridiculous.

These locks are a lot softer than the Valais, which is sort of rough but I think it's unwashed? I'll have to recheck. Ah, it's stated as 'gently washed'. Well, it doesn't really matter what it feels like. Only thing is it came wrapped in paper and I'm sure if I have a a container big enough for it. And my wool storage is out of hand anyway, I need to make more projects because I have so much wool
-
They are lovely & I can't wait to see what you'll make!!! I had a go at crocheting again, making a mini animal (won't reveal what)
-
Jellyfish wearing a hat!!! (both crocheted)

^ Oh, he's (or she's?) really cute! :lovey:
I've just been following this thread without writing anything myself because I can't do woolcrafts, I don't have the skills for it.
This is a nice thread to read and to see your (Ponybookworm, BlackCurtains and Shaiyeh) wonderful crafts!
-
Cheers HOM!!! I made more things!!!

Worm from a pattern, seal from improv
-
That jellyfish is so cute! As is the hat.
Cute worm (I love yellow). I love the fuzzy seal!
I'm in a big mood to needle felt. I think I'll try a more realistic sheep for practice.
-
Ponybookworm, those new friends are really lovely, especially that seal! :inlove:
-
HoM - I always encourage trying something new, don't say you don't have skill! :D besides, first projects always look funky. you should see the first yarn I spun xD It barely looks like yarn!!
-
Exactly!!! This lot is me after a few weeks of crochet, getting the tension right, practising the stitches, following a few patterns, & experimenting!!! There are plenty of tutorial vids on Youtube to get you started so you can learn the basics, & though I still have to take my time, I'm getting there!!!
Oh & have a fantastic bd Shaiyeh!!!
-
I agree! You already have artistic talent :) You shouldn't give up before you've even tried :)
-
Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement! :grouphug:
I was really bad at crafts at school because my teacher didn't know how to teach me (or I felt like she didn't even want to) because I was the only left-handed person in my class. I started to hate those classes and crafts because of that. :(
At that time, I managed to make something like a potholder and a neckerchief (which, as I recall, seems to have been left unfinished, and I don't even know where it is).
I just loved the art classes, but they had the same teacher and to whom I resisted as a teenager, because I didn't like the assignments she gave me and I would have liked to be able to make art freely (e.g. I would have liked to choose the model to draw myself, choose which technique I wanted to use..). :pout:
My mother likes to knit wool socks and she has made quite a few of them for me and herself. She has also tried to get me excited to try making them, but I'm not really excited yet. It seems too complicated for my brain.
I've tried crocheting a few years ago, but it kind of fell into a knot and I lost interest in it.
I really like needle felting, but it's been a long time since I did it last. I should still have the supplies and felting wool needed for it somewhere, but I don't remember where they are.
-
I'm so sorry you had such a bad teacher HOM xxx
Nimble Needles shows backwards knitting, which might be easier for you, & there are many ways to hold the yarn.
Hooked By Robin is left-handed too, & I'm sure if you look up left-handed craft tutorials, you'll find some which work with you instead of against you xxx
-

Samesies, high five! I never learned how to knit or crochet. When I was a kid (before school age), I loved crocheting long chains, haha. But I never had an idea of how to proceed from that first step. At school I had to learn, I think we made a bookmark or something, and mine was super uneven, after all these years I still remember how frustrating it was. At home Mum always expressed how difficult it was that I was left-handed so she couldn't teach me. And it was the same at school, everyone was like, should we use a mirror to teach her?? I also didn't like our crafts teacher so as soon as I was able, I took wood and metal working classes instead of textile crafts.
As an adult I've come to realise it's an entirely new skillset, nothing is stopping me from learning right-handed knitting. I can eat with chopsticks using either hand although holding a fork or a spoon in my right hand just feels weird and wrong. I think that's because I didn't grow up with chopsticks, I was a teenager when I first tried them, so it was a new motoric skill to learn, just like knitting. I started learning some basics of knitting with my Mum and sister and with the help of some video tutorials a number of years ago, but I didn't keep up with it and forgot how to do it. I guess I should start again but I barely have time for all the other crafty hobbies I have! ^^;
-
I'm right handed but had an art teacher in 9th grade that I did not like at all. She was very strict with what she wanted us to do. You had to do the project HER way, not your own way. It was very frustrating and the only time in school I didn't like art class.
HoM, you should get back into needle felting :D If you can find your supplies. But I also think your drawn artwork is very good
-
Ponybookworm, thanks for the tips!
Griffin! :hifive: Oh, you have almost the same experiences as me! Thanks for telling me about it. So I'm not the only one to whom this has happened.
I certainly would have liked wood crafts too, but I was afraid of saws and other machines that were used there.. and I would have been the only girl among boys. (Thinking about it now, it wouldn't bother me, because I'm not afraid of saws/machines anymore and I get along better with men than women!) It's sad that I didn't have the courage as a child. :(
BlackCurtains, thank you!
-
yes, +1 at NimbleNeedles (he's great, so sweet ;_;) and Hoooked by Robin! My first actual crochet project was an amigurumi cat mermaid, that I just followed along with a Hooked by Robin video to make.
I'm so sorry both of you had bad experiences though, HoM and Griffin. That's awful :(

Question... what's the main difference between knitting and crochet? My mom and grandma would crochet. They mainly made doilies, but my mom did crochet a cute little hat that she decorated and it hung on the wall. I know her big project was a shawl but she never finished it. My other grandma knitted. We had one of those afgans on the back of the couch that she made. Everybody had one of those in the 80s
-
Crochet is usually denser than knitting. Also, with knitting, you work with two points at a time. Crochet you just use the hook & your fingers. I've now crocheted in squares & circles, knitted on two needles, on five needles, & on circular needles, as well as the crochet.
Knitting seems faster, but can be less forgiving. When you knit, if you mess up, you either have to go back to a lifeline, or frog the lot & start again, unless you get REALLY lucky.
With crochet, if you mess up, you only need to go as far back as that mistake & bam, sorted.
Another thing I've noticed is with crochet, it's best not to use too fancy a yarn. I can crochet well enough with my binky, but I HATED doing it with the eyelash yarn for more than a simple border trim. Knitting I can do with any yarn.
I could go on, but each has its advantages & disadvantages, & both are really fun, producing some cute stuff!!!

nah, you can easily tink back, or rip back a few rows and pick up your stitches, or if it's just a dropped stitch, you can use a crochet hook to re-do the stitch by hooking through the ladders it creates :)
It does take a bit of knitting experience though, but is completely doable ^^
-
Ah, I see.
Frog. That's something I first heard on your podcast too, Shai. I didn't know what it meant at first but I figured it out  Why is it called that?
I bought myself some knitted socks from a seller on Etsy. I had asked if the socks would fit a 13+ and she said it would be tight but they should fit. Thankfully, they do! ...but only on my left foot. My right has some sort of issue and is swollen most of the time. I can't get the socks to go past my heel and that's the case with the majority of my socks. I love playful, colorful socks but I rarely buy them anymore. I took a gamble with these socks because they were so nice :(
This is the main reason I want to learn to knit. It would be great to make my own custom socks with a bigger size for my right foot.

Fingerless gloves!!! And the same technique I used to make the thumbhole can be used for buttonholes

Ahh! Those are so cool! Love the autumn-ish colors.
-
Ponybookworm, wow, those are really lovely and will definitely warm your hands! :lovey:

PONY-SIZED DOORMATS!!!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
I've also been making rugs but they are simpler, being just crochet rectangles & circles trimmed with eyelash yarns. The doormats have embroidery on them (I did that myself with yarn)
-
Those are so cute! I like the one on the bottom with the flowers the best.
-
A great idea and they look cute! :iconclap: Wipe your hooves!- doormat is great!
-
Wipe Your Hooves is for my Library (the books kind of give that away)
Welcome is a generic mat for a dollhouse I got which happens to fit Ponies
See if you can guess the themes of the others
And please crochet gods I want to stop, not make MGR capes complete with appliqued flowers!!!

Who do these remind you of???
-
Omg, those are so cute! I love them!
-
Made them based on the Merry-Go-Round Ponies. Those two are based on Sunny Bunch & Flower Bouquet
-
Awesome! I'm not real familiar with those. I just know Diamond Dreams 'cause she's sought after.
-
They are wonderful!

Cheers dears xxx

Regal capes for my Prince Ponies!!!
-
Oh, those are so cool! Did you make the crowns too? :)
-
Only Lapiz's crown (I also made Emerald's but he's not piccied), which I sculpted, painted, & stuck gems to. The other adults wear Chap Mei crowns I painted & added elastic to, & the younger Princes wear crowns I found on eBay which were perfect for them!!!
-
I like the one you made the best :)
So hey, would cross stitch be allowed in this thread? I used to do counted cross stitch many years ago. While cleaning up the craft closet I came across my old kits and threads. Some kits aren't even opened. If I remember correctly, we had to move and when we got here I never picked it back up. Anyway, I was looking for embroidery thread on Etsy, to have on hand for my miniatures, and ended up looking at cross stitch patterns. I found one that I want to make for my mom and bought it. I don't know when I'll have the time to do it. I remember liking it quite a bit, it's relaxing and it's a craft you can do while watching TV.
This is the pattern. My mom has always had a thing for lighthouses :)

Short answer: Yes
Long answer:
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Ponybookworm, Great royals' capes! Your princes are really handsome!
-
yeah for sure, post emroidery/xstitch :D Call it a fiber art thread ^__^ That's going to be gorgeous. I also used to xstitch a lot and never really pciked it up again, but it's so much fun :D
-
I saw your newest podcast, Shai. I like the pink! :D
But it made me want to knit XD and I still haven't tried it yet. Ugh. I've got all these great yarns saved in my Etsy favorites, mostly sock yarn, but also bulky for needle felting. So many amazing yarns!!!
Speaking of needle felting, I want to make a couple of rainbow sheep for Pride. I have bold rainbow locks and I wanted some pastel but now I can't afford it. I keep looking at raw wool too. One of these days I'm going to give scouring and dying it myself a go.
-
Bought this pattern off Etsy a wee bit ago & wanted to do it. Had the time today but it took ALL DAY

I bought more cross stitch kits. Simple ones, to help me remember how to do it. I got 3 and they were all under 10 dollars. I'll make them for my mom.
