Cigarette-smelling ponies... what can I do?
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:21:40 AM »
I bought 2 ponies off of ebay back in August that smelled like cigarettes (wasn't noted in description, if I had known that I wouldn't have bought them, but thats not the issue here). The smell on them isn't that bad, but i'd like to get rid of it. I've tried just about everything i could think of; Febreeze, dryer sheets, febreeze AND dryer sheets together, popping the head off and letting it air out outside, spraying them inside and out with my sister's perfume (not the best idea probably, but it has a strong scent, and some smell nice), more febreeze, cleaning them inside and out with fragrant soaps, more dryer sheets.... dryer sheets stuffed inside the body for a month and a half... febreeze again, scrubbing it with dawn, wiping it down with lysol wipes... everything I've tried so far, the smell came back a few days later, or didnt go away at all, and I dont want the smell to spread to my other ponies :( I have kept these ones away from my other ponies since I got them too. They're both lovely otherwise...

Is there anything else I could do about them? :(

I'd try to wash them one more time with a magic eraser (easy on the symbols and eyes!) and some strong dishwashing soap...and then try to sell them to a collector who doesn't mind smoke smell after that. :-(

Burying them in clean non-scented cat litter for a few weeks will get rid of the smell, in my experience. I had some ponies from ebay that absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke and (of all things) cat pee. A month buried in Tidy Cats did the trick. I don't remember what specific kind of Tidy Cats it was... presumably multiple cat since I had four cats at the time. I do know it was unscented because I had a cat who hated scented litter and wouldn't use it. It was also definitely clay litter and not the fancy corn or walnut or newspaper stuff. I have no idea if they would work the same.

If you have a cat, great, just use the litter as intended after the ponies have had their de-scenting. If not, keep the litter in your car for traction issues on ice in the winter. Or just keep it around for any future stinky ponies. :)

Hope this helps!

I have had success with just letting ponies sit out in good fresh air. It wasn't for cig smelling ponies, but rather musty smelling ponies. (it took a few months). I had no luck with baking soda, dryer sheets, scrubbing...

I think cat litter (with odor remover), and oxyclean baths are also recommended for smells.

To date I have had the best results with baking soda to neutralise the scent - the heavier the scent the more often I have to change the baking soda...once the smell seems to have gone, I then pop a dryer sheet inside the pony to push out the last of the scent and just give the pony a nicer smell over all!

do you just like, put the pony and the baking soda in a plastic bag or something? i think i might actually try this first before the cat litter :)

I got rid of the smoke smell of a pony by putting it in a plastic bag with both baking soda and cat litter. It worked! :)  I started out with baking soda but since I had cat litter I added that too after a while. I put a couple of cm (an inch) of it in a small plastic bag, put the pony in it, tied a knot and let it sit for a couple of days.

I am not sure how others go about it...I put the baking soda in a little dish, put the pony beside it and then cover them over with a tuperware [a book on top to hold it down] to seal them in together - you need to make sure no air can get in or get out...the baking soda then works to neutralise any acidic or alkaline in the air and should therefore remove the smoky smell...

Good luck!

Do you have a deep freeze, or just a regular freezer?
Try freezing stinky pony overnight.
Supposidly coldness gets rid of smell.
Wanna give it a try for science?

You can also soak them in a cleaner called Simple Green.  I've had great luck with it!  Doesn't hurt hair or glitter.

yeah i bought a boxed pony that smelled like cigs, so I just let it sit for a long time, and now it doesn't smell at all. :P But I think I may just have been lucky it was only exposed to smoke for a short time.

Perhaps you could spray them with a smell you like that could cover up the smell?
