An update!

It's not really obvious in the picture, but I think there's been a little improvement so far. I'll wait longer for the next update and hopefully there'll be more appreciable progress by then.  ^.^

Do you have any way to find it out what type of UV comes out of the lamp? Maybe the reason why it did not work for some people  was because it is not omitting the right type of UV?

That's a good question! I looked into it and indeed most true blacklights emit UVA. I do know a lot of 'blacklights' out there (specifically incandescent ones) don't actually emit a lot of UV light, so if someone uses one of those then it might not work.
If nothing else, I could also try putting her next to one of my gecko's cages - they have full-spectrum mercury bulbs in their lamps.

Pony Corral / Acrylic paint won't come off - help?
« on: April 07, 2020, 10:38:48 AM »
I recently sunfaded a Melody, and was removing the paint covering her eyes and blush... but some of it just won't come off. I've scrubbed at it with rubbing alcohol and a magic eraser, but no luck. There's still a lot of stubborn little flecks.

(I also managed to rub off what remained of her original blush, which sucks :()

What's the next best step? I'd rather not resort to chemicals right away.

Pony Corral / Sunfading... with a UV lamp!
« on: April 03, 2020, 11:47:02 AM »
So I have a Nightglider that has what looks like Sharpie marks on her nose. I've seen some discussion about using UV lamps to sunfade, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it. And since I happen to have a UV bulb, I decided to actually try it!

I'm hoping this will be faster than the weak spring sun here. I'll monitor her progress and document it here.

(Hope no one thinks any less of me for using a rarer pony as a guinea pig  ^^; None of the other ponies I have have such drastic marks though. I figured it was better to use something that would be obvious if it improved)

Pony Corral / Re: Removing superglue from a neck seam ?

Yeah, acetone is your best bet. Rubbing alcohol doesn't do anything to superglue, unfortunately.

Just be careful around any symbols/eyes/etc. because acetone will definitely remove them!

Pony Corral / Show me Night Glider alternate rehairs?
« on: October 27, 2018, 08:14:14 PM »
I recently acquired a Night Glider whose hair has definitely seen better days, and I think it would be fun to rehair her with something besides plain white  ^.^ But I'm not sure what to do, so I'd like to see all the other Night Glider rehairs out there to get some ideas! (And if you can name the colors you used, that would be even better)

Hooray on finding Night Glider! I totally agree that she's a Very Special Pony. Happy Birthday as well  :)

WRT the pin dot I never use nails for scraping; I use this fish knife and it works like a bomb:

Ooh, that looks like a good idea! Not sure where I could find a fish knife around here... maybe the back of a regular dinner knife would work :P

And thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!

My family was visiting me a few days ago for my birthday, so we decided to go downtown for a bit. We stopped in an antique store, and after looking around I managed to find some ponies.

That alone would have been cool enough, but when I dug through them, I find... a Night Glider! For $5.50!!  :whoa:

A little grungy, but nothing that can't be fixed with a little TLC (and maybe a re-hairing)

Incidentally, I did already have a somewhat-baity Night Glider (that still cost a decent amount, lol), but at such a low price I wasn't going to pass this girl up.

Night Glider, meet Night Glider!

I was going to do an alternate rehair on the first one, but her hair really isn't that bad compared to the new one so maybe I should just try to whiten it? Hmm.
Also the new one has a fair amount of pindot - is there something I can use to scrape it off besides fingernails? Mine might be long enough, but they're not very strong, and I don't want to totally wreck them.  ^^;

Oh my god, I didn't know about these new black ponies
HQG1Cs have tapped into my ultimate weakness - night/space-related things.

I think I get paid this Friday...

Pony Corral / Re: Baby Applejack with yellow apples?
« on: June 21, 2018, 07:17:31 PM »
Lots of Cotton Candys have blue eyes, despite being purple at the beginning. This has been confirmed to not be a variant (in most cases), and to instead be due to the behavior of the red pigment. Red is much more sensitive to UV light, so it breaks down very quickly. Yellow is not as sensitive, therefore the symbols look yellow without any damage or smudges to the paint.
I'm still inclined to believe it is due to fading for this reason, but I'd still love to see photos if you can provide them later.  :)

The thing that makes me kinda skeptical that it's just fading is that the stems/leaves on the variant are blue. If they were originally 'normal', that would suggest the yellow pigment in the green stems has faded almost completely - yet the apples are still definitely yellow. Regular Applejack's apples are also pretty red, so I would think that if they were faded they'd be almost white.

Maybe someone out there with a baity Baby Applejack should leave her out in the sun for a while and let us know what happens. :P

Customs / Moondancer's glitter
« on: May 11, 2018, 04:27:08 PM »
Hi guys, I'm touching up a Moondancer with some pretty faded symbols. I was going to use some red Extreme Glitter paint from Folkart for her stars, but after taking a closer look, her glitter looks more like a dark pink. Is that its real color, or has it just faded over time? And if her stars are actually pink, what brand/color of glitter would be a match for them?

And while I'm at it, for colored glitter, is it better to mix some silver with it before painting it on, or should I paint a layer of silver on before using the colored glitter? I want the symbols to look as close to the originals as possible :P
