Title: 30+ year long grail!
Post by: kiwimlp on January 20, 2012, 01:06:34 PM
As a horse-mad child (born into an anit-horse family) I had 3 major goals.

#1 Own a horse!  I finally wore my parents down at age 15 when I got my first ever pony, Miganette.
#2 Own a lifestyle property!  We accomplished this 5 years ago when we bought 3 acres of land beside the beach
#3 Have my own all-weather riding surface!  Still working on this one!
#4 Have my own tack room!  Check out below :)

We built a 3 bay shed a couple of years ago to store my float, hay etc in and now hubby has built me a room at the back of one of the bays.  Behold, my tack room!!!

The round metal thing on the floor at the back is an air compresser so I can pump up my float tyres before I go anywhere.

And the unfinished corner.  I am waiting for cover racks and a storage shelf so I can arrange all of my covers which are currently still stored in the garage:

Wow, that's amazing. *amazed by all the ribbons*

Its very cool to see someone have a childhood dream and actually stick to it, meeting their goals and succeed, so I applaud you on that.

Oh, that is awesome! Sounds like you have some nice property too. Ownin' land is nice. I used to live in the boonies with 12 acres all to myself. Now I live in an apartment with a balcony. I miss the space!

Thank you everyone. I am kind of lucky in that I have always been one to set long term goals/dreams for myself.  I wanted a horse so badly when I was in my teens so I guess I never grew out of the hobby like a lot of my friends did.  :D

I'm really happy for you, what a great tack room!  I'm also the only horsey one in my family.  No horse for me yet - I'm still working on that.  Would love to see pics of your horses!

I have always wanted a horse  :(  But no money and a very urban home make it pretty much impossible at this point.  I haven't given up hope completely, my dream would be a house with enough space for a horse so I can go riding  :)  Heck, I'd settle for a pony or a mini horse lol.  Just because you can't ride them doesn't make them less awesome lol

Awesome!  When I was little my dream was to own a ranch and to place my art studio with huge windows so I could spend my days drawing the horses.  I stuck with my art, but I don't think I'd ever own a ranch.  Maybe I should just come visit you and draw your horses, lol!

Thank you once again everyone.  For those of you still longing for a horse of your own, hang in there!  You will get one if you want it badly enough.  My first pony was on a lease only basis.  I rode her bareback until I had enough money for a saddle and then I used to work at the school canteen at lunch times to pay for shoeing.

Ashes, you would be welcome to draw my girls anytime :D

oh my gosh - that is sooo cool! And your ribbons! Wow!

How many horses do you have, and what are your events? Dressage? Show Jumping? Cross country?

My mum had horses when I was young (I think that's largely where my love for them/drawing horses came from). I lost my confidence riding early on, but absolutely love being around horses (just get a little nervous on their back! - stupid, eh?). But gimme a halter, a grooming brush and a hoof pick and I'm happy as larry. And their smell... oh... that has got to be one of the best things about them!

Mum sadly sold her last horse when I was about 16. We're in Auckland, and out where we used to graze has just got so ridiculously built up. So sad. It's so wonderful that you got your lifestyle block; you must enjoy it so much  :)

Wow! Nice tack room!
My mum saved for years to buy a horse. Sadly she got married and had to spend the money on buying a wardrobe instead! She's worked at the same riding school for over 40 years but on those lousy wages she's never been able to afford her own horse!

I did everything on my old horse!  Eventing, show jumping, show hunter, dressage, showing and trail riding.  I even took him in a hunt (but he pulled my arms out of their sockets, lol). He was a fantastic little horse and a total winning machine. He made the monkey on his back (aka: me) look like I could ride, LOL.  I miss him so much.

I only have one riding horse at a time.  Currently I own a pinto X-Bred but I am looking at a 3/4 TB to replace her *fingers crossed*.  I am not a particuarly confident rider either so don't feel bad.  I've had some pretty untrained horses in my time and they have done some fairly dangerous things to me so I am cautious about what I get on now!  I know what you mean about the land getting built out, it is happening in our area too.  So sad.

Jobs with horses never seem to pay well.  At least she gets to be around horses and with riding all different ones it will help improve her skills.

Thank you to everyone else for your lovely comments.  I really am surprised by how many of you have posted here!  :)  When I was a teenager all of the other kids had walls full of ribbons they had won. I was so envious (not in a nasty way) so I just had to hang mine up when I finally got my room :)
