Title: For how much money would you be willing to sell your pony collection at once?
Post by: Pierlala on December 01, 2017, 01:19:28 PM
Thought I make a fun topic to see what people think or feel what value their collection might be. I am not asking what the value is. But more like what you would be willing to let it go for.

I personally haven't been into the "official" pony collecting for that long, but I do have some very valuable ponies. I enjoy my collection a lot. In the beginning I bought a lot off of Ebay, not knowing about Global Shipping Program etc. So I often paid loads of shipping cost. If I would have started now I would have done it different. Take it more slowly instead of going on a shopping spree on Ebay and anywhere you can buy Ponies. I think the shipping cost I've paid for all my ponies is about 50/50. I don't want to get rid of my collection for many years. But if I have to make a choice right now, I think I would say between 6000 and 7000 euro. Considering the value of the ponies, shipping cost and emotional value.

I'd like to hear about yours.

What's the Global Shipping Program?

Hmmm...Idk, absolutely no less than $5000 off the top of my head, but probably more than that if I actually sat down to figure in all I have.  That's only for the G1s, mind you and not including any shipping/packing, etc.  I would need a little more thought to estimate for all 4 generations.

I was thinking this myself!  Half of my collection has been packed up for years. I'm just unpacking,  cleaning and putting some  up for sale now. I'm thinking of trying to sell half of my ponies. But it's a pain.

I'd let the whole lot go for $2,000 I think. That's enough for a nice vacation and maybe even a deposit for my next apartment. That would be super helpful. Plus Id be free of a lot weight. It's going to be a few years until I have a house and space for my collection. It's kind of a waste  Not that I wouldn't miss them dearly.

Anybody with money to spare want an instant collection? ; )

Global Shipping Program is a shipping method being used by (sadly) a lot of sellers on Ebay lately. It's getting more and more popular. But in fact it is waaaaaay more expensive for buyers. Instead of people going to a postoffice to calculate what shipping actually cost to a specific country. Ebay takes care of that an estimates how much it would be, plus they make a profit off of it. Which makes the method super expensive for buyers.

I didn't know about this in the beginning and I bought so much from sellers who used it. I regret that. I could have been rich or richer in ponies if I paid more attention to it. But I know now and I rarely buy from people who use the Global Shipping Program. Simply because I refuse to pay 2 sometimes even 3 times the actual shipping cost for 1 Pony. Oh and the worst thing. The Global Shipping Program doesn't do combined shipping, so you pay for each pony seperate... -_-

I wouldn't sell the whole collection for any amount so for me an academic question. No amount of money supersedes nostalgia for me. Every other collection or thing would go first. I love rehoming doubles, but I don't sell my childhood ponies and I have no interest in parting with the vast majorityof the others.. I am hoping I live to a good enough age that they will be old and important enough to interest a museum so they can stay together  (if they don't deteriorate) even after I have gone, and make other people happy instead :D

Or for 10,000,000$.  Either is acceptable.

I have to say. Selling my collection automatically excludes my childhood ponies. I would never sell those. I am too attached to them.

If I happen to have my collection untill I die. My son will inherrit them. He is free to do with them as he pleases. I hope he would take care of them (he is already growing up with pony love, so he is learning to value them :)) but I wouldn't mind him selling them to save for a goal in the future. I'm still a mom afterall

Oh, I remember being asked to participate in this when it first came out.  I declined, and have never used it.  Ridiculous.

Hmmmm what I have left? I'll take $200 for the rest of my playsets and loose ponies.

With the exception of my childhood herd, those have been passed along to DD and they're not leaving...

i wouldn't want to let go of my collection under any circumstances, but i think if needs were dire i might let it go for 300-500$. its probably only worth about 250$ tops.

With close to 2,000 members to my herd and many of them Nirvana, my price would be more than anyone would be willing to pay ;)

I love my ponies and don't know that I'd be able to sell them for any amount though...

If we exclude childhood friends, i would be willing to trade for all my debt being paid off! Then I can start over, smarter! I, like everyone, made mistakes and overpaid.

I think the entirety of what I have is probably worth $20,000-30,000, maybe a bit more. I am in the process of downsizing but there are some ponies that just aren't going anywhere (my Venny Lickety Split in my avatar, ponies that were meaningful gifts from people important to me, childhood favorites, or my Greek Ladybird for example).

I don't have a huge collection, and none of my ponies are particularly rare or valuable, but I love them, so it's difficult to say!  I don't even know how much it's all worth lol.
Title: Re: For how much money would you be willing to sell your pony collection at once?

Umm....Nope. Most of my ponies are valued to me, not because they are rare, most 'cause memories. If I was to put a market value on my ponies..I'd say 500-750$ I do have around 100 ponies, and some of them are the more sought after, limited time G4's.

I really need to get around to appraising my collection.

G1 only, at least $5,000, but it would need to be a lot more for me to really jump at the offer. All of my ponies, probably add another $500 or so at least.

None of my ponies are valuable or anything, honestly, but I wouldn't give them up for anything less than a crazy offer. Like a couple thousand dollars or so for most of them. However there's a handful I wouldn't let go of for any offer short of something entirely ridiculous (or nothing ever, in the case of two).

I have a hard enough time rehoming my doubles. I don't think I can part with my collection and never part with the childhood ponies of course. I plan to have them until I die.

I think my topic is misunderstood. I don't mean that someone walks up to you and gives you the money in hand. But more like...if you were to sell your collection, what price would you put on it.

Because if someone came up to me right now and offered me 7000 euro, I would not sell it. Because at this point I simply have no interest selling it. But incase I ever will. That would most lilely be the price, sbould my collection not expand.

Again, 10,000,000$
I wouldn't part with my ponies voluntarily.  They're more than a collection, they're an embodiment of childhood memories and make me happy when I look at them, in a time when few other things do.  What they'd fetch at 'market value' wouldn't come close to doing either of those things.

You might be better off asking 'If you had to buy a MLP collection identical to what you have today, how much do you think it would cost?'

For mine, I'd guess north of 10,000-15,000$.

You want to know what price someone would put their collection up for sale for but not it's value?  :what:

I mean, if I were to sell my collection, I'd put it up for what I believed it's market value to be.
I'd estimate mine to be worth maybe $2000 or so but if I were to actually sell my collection I know it's unlikely I'd get that much selling all in one lot. I'd sell ponies individually first then if there were some that didn't sell after a while I'd put those in a lower priced lot.

I know the market value of my collection - I wanted to be sure it fit under the amount allowed under my home insurance. But no way would I let any of it go. For any amount, overpriced or otherwise. Many are gifts from friends and family, and even those that aren't, most are transactions where I have made new friends, and those are still dear to me. Even the nostalgia of buying new in store, each was a happy memory, and those too are important to me. You can have my ponies over my dead body - and I'd still probably haunt you!

Hmmm... It would be very high, let's just say that  ;) I wouldn't let it go for any amount! (Especially my favourites, and the Sunsparkles)

Although realistically it would probably be worth £1000 maybe? There's around 600- 700 of them, and about 100 are g1s. However I don't have many ponies that are HTF, and most g1 ponies have flaws. There's only a couple of minty ones. My g3s are mostly in nice condition, though, and all my own g4s are as new. Many of them are friends childhood ponies, gifts or Car Boot Rescues, so they're all very special :)

To buy it back? Probably a lot more, as, like I said many are from Car Boots, so they cost less than £1 each, and I don't think it's possible to get them that cheap again, especially g1s.

No, this is why I said emotional value can add up to the price. So perhaps once you come to a point that you might want to sell them, there will still be some kind of emotional value to them. Which probably makes you add another couple of hundered maybe even thousands of dollers/euros. I don't ask what the market value of your total collection is. But what YOU find it worth and one day are willing to sel it for that price. Not caring about buyers not finding it worth that much. It is litteraly about YOU. Not about factual value.
Title: Re: For how much money would you be willing to sell your pony collection at once?

If it's that sentimentally valuable to you you wouldn't sell it, would you? If you had to sell it to make money, you would sell it for market price because otherwise it wouldn't shift. I get that you're just speculating. I just feel like if you value your collection at a huge monetary amount due to sentiment, what you are really saying is "I won't sell it, it's too important to me."

So the topic becomes a  bit self-defeating...

When I was with my ex...money was very...very thight...due to his gambling problem...
So the day came I sold my entire Barbie Collection (no vintage ones, mostly collector edition ones when they came out for the *normal* price Mattel also sold them) in one go for 350 euro....but when I now calculate what the dolls had cost me...I come out on a price between 1000 and 1500 euro....soI practically *gave* them away!!!

And some months later... I was unpacking my older Pony collection.... (I just started collecting MLP before I met my ex!), and also because of bills I didn't had enough money for to cover them again due to his gambling!!!

And I put a couple of them on Marktplaats (Dutch version of Craigslist) and the bidding begon on some who where more worth then I aspected they where....I start crying.....
And then I got so very angry with my ex...that I was ALWAYS the one who had to sell things because HE had a gambling problem and always wiggle his way out off his responsebility to make up HIS debts...no...he ALWAYS relied on ME to do!!!

And when he came home...I had told him, via a text that morning, that I decided to sell the ponies that day and when he came home that afternoon... He was flabbergasted to see that I was brushing and grooming those ponies and putting them up for display in the Cabinet where my Barbie collection stood before the sale!!!
And when I told him that I wasn't going to pay anymore for HIS debts...all Hell broke loose!! But I had sat crying my eye's out that afternoon in the middle of my Precious Ponies and knew...No Money In The World....could get me to sell those Ponies!!!
And that was just the beginning of putting my foot down with him....a couple of months later after another fight about his gambling...I trow him out!!!!

And in the autumn of 2013 I *met* my *new* partner (I already was friends with him when I was with my ex, just friends nothing else!!!), everything I told you above was in the autumn of 2012 and in Spring 2013 after my Gastric Bypass I had finally the courage to trow him to the curb!!!

And now in 2017 we are still so very happy with each other, and my ponies!!! He was the one who gave me my Pony Room, because he knew how much they mean to me!
And he is mostly the one who encourage me to buy More Ponies!!!

Sorry for the whole story...but only this way I feel I could explain what my Ponies really mean to me...

There are a few that i would not sell for any amount of money solely because of the sentimental value of them.

The rest if someone offered me a lower but sensible amount but promised they would never be sold on then I would consider it.

but as it stands they are not for sale but will be going through a thinning out session after Christmas along with my other collections

I guess I just find it hard to think like that. Emotional value doesn't add anything to the monetary value in my mind. Surely there is a price I'd consider selling at if someone offered, whether I was looking to sell them or not but that's, as you say, not what you meant.

Oh my gosh! I know how it feels! I went threw something very similar to yours! I had to sell of my collections also just to pay the bills. I got rid of mine also and have a wonderful new man in my life that is always telling me to get more to fill up the shelves! :)  I have sold my collection many times now and hope that I don't have to ever do it again! :(

It's heartbreaking to read that some of you has been there/go trough atm....where I was a couple of years ago...

And when you have to sell them because your roof of your house caved in....that's also very sad...but If someone deliberately trow away a whole month salary just at gambling... and not once...but dozens of times...that is just plain wrong!!! And at times it feeled like He was just plain stealing from me! Even money I had hide away in a small safe.....was not safe!!! He stole my key and did go to the shop to make a duplicate....
Bye bye money...I worked my *ss off by taking more hours at work and even sell a heap of clothes out of my closet....

I haven't any childeren, and never will be...so if i die...if that is before my fiancee..he told me he wouldn't sell 1 pony!!! He even let my Pony Room intact!
So I really have no clue what my collection is worth...and I doesn't want to know either!!! Even for all the money in the world...I would not let 1 of them go!

I have in the basement a couple of containers with the ones I obtained double because in the beginning I bought my Ponies in lots, but now I need to sort them all out and go to the process of Re-Home them...and even that I find difficult!!! But I already know what I'm going to do with the money from the sold ponies....buying more Ponies!!!! ;-)

There are certain ponies I don't re-home even when double or tripple. I am too in love with them lol. Such as Snuzzle, Pretty Vision, all the Sweet Kisses ponies (euro versions).

Don't get me wrong in this topic. I am not willing to sell or give away my ponies any time soon and knowing myself, probably never. I am a collector of many things. Not just ponies. I collect Pink Panther as well and have a huge collection of plushe and statues. Which was also a childhood obsession and I stil have all of them :)

I do agree that rehoming ponies you have double is sometimes difficult, but I only do it when I am in need of money or want to buy more ponies with the money I got from them.

Sorry to hear some of you went through terrible things like havig to sell your ponies because your partner brought you in financial trouble. I can't imagine myself ever having to do something like that.

Or for 10,000,000$.  Either is acceptable.
This!

Me and my BF just did a quick estimation and my collection is probably worth about 5,000 - 10,000$, if you include all generations and all the accessories, lunch boxes, puzzles, plushies and other stuff, probably at least 8,000$.

BUT the only way I would sell them is if all my childhood ponies were excluded and someone offered me such a rediculously high amount that I could buy them all back, and then some, plus a million other things I want.  XD

I wouldn't sell it at the moment. Unless I was in trouble I'd rather have the ponies.

Wow!! That's an amazing story.  They also represent a turning point in my life as well.

You can pry them out of my cold, dead hands.
Or for 10,000,000$.  Either is acceptable.

What Baby Sugarberry said.

I actually wanted to do this. I put an ad up on Craigslist, $5k for everything, and I only had people asking for the g1s. I'd probably be willing to go less, just because I'm out of space and I really don't do anything with them anymore.   I just don't have the patience to sell them individually.

Some of these have sentimental value to me....like some were given to me as a present by my late brother, my cousins, parents, etc. And some have memories intact to them.

I have actually been at a crossroads lately because of a personal life crisis going on.

I thought about selling them and then wanted to cry. I can't do it. Even if the story behind some of them is stupid, I get attached to each pony.  I had an ex boyfriend who was trying to get me to sell my G4's because I went through I time where I was so frustrated with G4's. This ex also was using me for money and knew any money I got would just go to him eventually for food and games. I ditched him a little over a couple of months ago. Since then? I have bought more G4 things. :P
My dad even put him in his place when he started pressuring me not only to start selling my G4's, but also the G1's I don't care for as much. My dad said "She has worked hard on her collection."
I am so glad my dad stood up for me that day.

I really cannot put a price on them.
