What kind of clay should i use? and sculpting tutorials?
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:58:31 AM »
So...I've been using some of the cheap stuff from walmart (it says sculpey on the package) but I was wondering what would be the best thing for me to start using?

I have seen some air dry clays at Michaels, as well as more Sculpey and whatnot, but I just don't know what would be best for me to use.  any ideas?

Also wondering if there are any sculpting tutorials anywhere?

I use sculpy when I sculpt but I hate sculpting so I do it very rarely. Hopefully one of our customizers who sculpts lots will be able to help.

I don't sculpt often but when I do I use apoxie sculpt. It's a two part apoxie so it cures chemically - no baking necessary. It also dries without shrinkage and is almost as hard as a rock although it sands easily once dry which is nice.

As far as I know it's not available in stores and had to be ordered online - http://www.avesstudio.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=28&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1&vmcchk=1&Itemid=1
I usually order the white and because I only sculpt small things (horns, furry feet, patch holes) I only order the 1/4lb. I think that most customizers go for the full pound.

I recommend avoiding air-dry clays. They tend dry brittle and break easily. I think most people who don't use apoxie sculpt (or a similar apoxie product) use super sculpey.

Good luck with your sculpting. :D
