Pony Corral / G5 Netflix MLP Make Your Mark Discussion
« on: May 26, 2022, 05:38:16 AM »
I figured I'd make a separate thread for this.
So Netflix is releasing the Make Your Mark series one episode at a time, or "chapters" as they call them.

Chapter 1 released today and because today is a holiday I have already seen it ;)

Non-spoilery first impressions:
  • I already like it better than the movie because it focuses on one pony per chapter and not all on Sunny. Animation is of course cheaper but I can deal with that.
  • I still don't like how they only have symbols on one side and how small they are. It's hard to make them out and makes the ponies inhabiting the world look like color swaps without any personality (speaking roles being an excption).
  • Posey looks so saturated I had to squint when she was on screen.

Spoilers behind the cut:

Spoiler
I really only like Zipp out of all the new characters, so it was nice the series started out with her. I have said it before about the movie, but I like how the new characters are not all one-note like the G4ers were. Zipp is not just rebellious princess or trick-flier, she is also a detective now. Boy-pony isn't just the policeman, he is also a caregiver to animals and as per this episode he received a more miraculous baby dragon he can't communicate with. Which creates a problem for him and can lead to some character growth.
So the writing is already a little ahead of what we saw in G4, where characters were constantly reset to play out the stereotype they were created with.
There seems to be an ongoing storyline that could have been a movie plot, which is always good because it means there will be an end to this eventually, not an endless continuation with resulting world building holes like FiM.

G5 will probably never be my favorite gen, especially because I dislike the Tales kind of setting with modern technology and un-ponified living conditions. But since I still lve to watch kids stuff in my old age (TM) I enjoyed myself. It really feels like something made for kids in mind and not "kids and their parents and the parents unmarried 30 year old siblings who spend their nights on the Dark Web" :P

I'm also looking forward to seeing the new antagonist just because of the design. She already reminds me of Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon, and not just because of the hilarious anime villain laugh.

I disliked that Posey came around so quickly and that an Earth Pony couldn't be singing their Earth song. They really continue this nonsense from G4 where Earth ponies are obviously disadvantaged but have to agree to let Pegasi and Unicorns lord over them because "harmony". Earthlings couldn't even walk when the magic shortened out. TF? They could walk just fine without magic. I was hoping Posey would continue to call out the obvious. It would have been more interesting.

Nitpicks:
Pipp is still the worst, she is so annoying and daft. I really just plain hate her, from her color scheme to her songs to her obvious influencer/pop star character. I hope they'll be giving her some type of conflict, too. She seems like she just exists so the show can have songs.

The Dollhouse / Collectors of dark/creepy/gothy dolls?
« on: April 26, 2022, 03:40:45 AM »
Hi, I was wondering in the Rainbow High thread if any dark themed dolls had died out. Are there any dolls you have (playline, collector or else) that satisfy the darkly inclined folks?
I remember Bleeding Edge Goths, Monster High, certain Pullips or Momokos that were influenced by the Goth subculture, inspired by Gothic fiction or just "dark".

Mind you, I am not talking about monster dolls allthough I mentioned MH. I am strictly talking about certain looks or styles. Morticia Addams instead of Bride of Frankenstein. So dolls like Living Dead Dolls are not on my radar.

Do you have any? It would be nice to have a thred just for goth-y dolls to combat the sparkly, rainbowy mainstream a bit ;) You can also post stock images of dolls you know of but don't own yourself.

Also, are there any current dolls out there that still look like that? I would love to know.

Anyone collect NaNaNas or the new NNN Teens? I like them a lot but so far I haven't given in. They have printed on features as well as real clothes and the larger dolls have rooted hair instead of wigs.

I am not surprised by this but I am angry. Remind me why people (especially here) hold this company in such high regard? Blue Sky Studio's biggest hit was certainly Ice Age but they had a couple of other great toon movies.

They were working on the fantasy movie 'Nimona' based on the comic books of the same name that Disney now killed before it could get completed because they can't take it when competition makes better "princess" stuff than them. The director was let go and production halted.

A new Ice Age series was already announced at Disney+ and Blue Sky won't be involved in it at all. Gotta milk those franchises.

Off Topic / Netflix cancels Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
« on: September 27, 2020, 11:47:04 AM »
“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.’ We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of ‘The Dark Crystal’ saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future,” said executive producer Lisa Henson.

I am really, really disappointed. I already know and hate that Netflix cancels most shows willy-nilly. But I didn't think they'd leave Dark Crystal without a conclusion since it was a critical darling and a hit with audiences.
It's nice to hear the Henson Company will somehow wrap up the story, but nothing will be better than a final movie. I don't want no book or comic. We've been through this. Netflix is a huge, rich company and them backing out because an expesnive show is expensive is just ridiculous. They knew what they were in for and they have the money to make more. They just don't want to.

The Dollhouse / New MH inspired doll line? Mice?
« on: September 01, 2020, 06:31:39 AM »
You see me posting old-ish news to make new threads as of late, but what else can I do if I want to discuss these things? I've been out of the loop when it comes to dolls for quite a while now, so imagine my reaction when I come across these on AliExpress:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000957566279.html

They look very Mattel-y and way too detailed to be knockoffs. The heads are Frightmares so I assume these are just Frankendolls for now, but the bodies, clothes and shoes look very specific. Anyone got news what these could be? Any new trademarks?

They look very, VERY obviously like mouse characters using modified MH bodies. MH had a rat character in its later line-up, Mouscedes King, but she didn't have feet or sculpted fur like that. Her tail was also different but the hands were the same.
I hope these won't get scrapped. I would love to see a line of anthro animals, especially if they are small rodents because I'm a mouse owner myself and was already over the moon when MH introduced Mouscedes back in the day :P
I also love the dresses. Very Arietty. There has been some thought put into what a mouse could use to make clothes for herself, so cute. Especially the big bobby pin.

Off Topic / Zaps watches Filly Funtasia so you don't have to
« on: August 18, 2020, 06:06:39 PM »
Ahh, Filly. I knew thee well. There was a time when Filly displays in my neck of the woods would be bigger than the FiM ones. Filly originated in Hong Kong and was developped by Dracco. It first appeared on shelves in 2006

So what is Filly? Filly is an MLP rip-off but it's cool. We accept it.
Filly came in collector sets or blind bags and each and every wave had a different theme. The tiny figs were often flocked, glow in the dark or glitter. There was an overarching story with many recurring characters and each one had a little backcard style description and family tree. Filly was big for many years so logically a cartoon was made.

Most pony people across the pond were blissfully unaware of Filly until a trailer dropped for the cartoon and some vowed to watch it rather than FiM because FiM at that point (2014) was already considered samey and pandering. But the show didn't drop until early 2019 and people had moved on to screaming about the FiM finale.

I, however, found the first season in the depths of the internet (in Italian) and I will watch each and every episode for you as long as you find it funny. I am not a snooty cartoon critic who thinks pastel pony toons are made for adults so while there will be exaggeration and overthinking, none of it will be done in seriousness.

Plot: The fillies are all studying at Royal Magic Academy led by principal Miss Sparkle (sound familiar?)

Main cast:

Spoiler

LtR: Will, Bella, Rose, Cedric, Lynn

Rose - our protagonist. Rose is an idealistic, caring princess who always tries her best. She is an artist and a Unicorn type, obvi.

Bella (short for Isabella) - she is clumsy, has magenta hair and likes cupcakes (sound familiar?). She is an Elf type.

Lynn - the cool kid who is into horror, adventure and such. Best Filly. Witch type.

Will (short for Willow but issa dude) - has a design you will all adore and wish it was in MLP. Sporty and goofy, Lynn's best friend. Fairy type.

Cedric - an intelligent prince, popular with the girls and also an inventor. Royal type (boring). You'll want his design as well.

Episode recap list:
Episode 1 - The Cupcake Mystery
Episode 2 - The Blue Rainbow

The Dollhouse / Barbie BMR1959
« on: August 17, 2020, 01:00:51 PM »
https://www.youtube.com/embed/BjEFRg_iAWM

Is anyone into these? Second wave hit a couple of weeks ago. I have heard/read their faces tend to be pixelated due to the screening process but quality looks great otherwise.

You might probably think the fashions are ugly but I am into things like that
I like how this is all sporty, bright looking with some "unflattering" cuts as they say. I am getting some 90s vibes, too with the biker shorts and neon translucent raincoats... but we need more tiny backpacks! :P

BMR1959 stands for Barbie's full name and the year the first Barbie doll came out. At first I thought it was a pricy collab with a fashion label but these are all in-house designs and the dolls are all MtM bodies and surprisingly affordable compared to Mattel's other offerings for adult collectors. You could get one for a kid, which is nice!

The Dollhouse / Hasbro discontinues controversial Trolls doll
« on: August 14, 2020, 07:29:52 AM »
Hasbro has gotten themselves into some hot water when a mother posted the Trolls World Tour "Giggle n Sing" Poppy doll on her instagram, remarking how the doll had a special button between her legs that wasn't advertised on the box.
When pressing her belly this Poppy doll would either giggle or sing a snippet from her movie songs but when pressing the "hidden" button she would gasp, shriek or say "oops".

The post went viral and soon Hasbro got accused of sexualizing the doll, trying to smuggle the weird feature into little girls rooms without the parents knowing since it wasn't an advertised feature.
Hasbro silently discontinued the doll.

According to senior vice president of Hasbro, this is the reason why the doll had sensitive "private parts":
Quote
This feature was designed to react when the doll was seated, but we recognize the placement of the sensor may be perceived as inappropriate. This was not intentional and we are happy to provide consumers with a replacement Poppy doll of similar value through our Consumer Care team.

Let's hope this team is not in charge of any G5 toys. How daft do you have to be to put a button for "seating" right between a female doll's legs
They could have come up with a better engineering solution, after all they've made niftier gimmicks in the past. Imagine if they had put a lever between a boy doll's legs, haha...

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Funko Pops - who else is done with them?
« on: May 14, 2020, 03:25:15 AM »
Funko Pops suck

Just kidding, but this is sort of the feeling this post might give some Pop collectors, so please don't take it personally.

Spoiler
Funko Pops are sort of a phenomenon. Whether you like them or not, they made a mark in toy history, taking brand liscensing to an all new level. All of a sudden you could get TV show characters, cereal mascots, sports stars, musicians, movie monsters and MLPs all in the same style, from the same company, perfect for starting a collection without even wanting to.
I have friends who say they don't collect and yet have ten Pops or more. The concept worked just that well: you see a character, person or figure you like and have emotional attachment to = you buy the Pop. And then you do it a couple more times because it's less about the toy and more about having this presentation of someone/something you like.

Even my old dad who never collected toys got the Bob Ross Pop range because he is a diehard fan of Bob Ross and had never seen Bob Ross merch before.

Of course Funko has more lines than just the Pops. You can now get retro styled action figures of Bob Ross, I am sure.

I fell into the Funko trap, too. It started with the alien diva from Fifth Element. I thought "wow, I have never seen a figure of this obscure character that I loved as a teen. I'll pay this steep price. It's just once" (15€!!!)

Now Ive got over ten of these. Two of which were Hot Topic exclusives so I had to pay even more to import them.
And now I'm done with them. I haven't bought one for myself in over a year. I think/hope I am cured

Things I hated about being a Funko collector:
-Way too expensive and hardly never goes on sale
-Quality control was abysmal on certain figures, returning them was never an option because sometimes all figures in one batch had the same paint flaw
-Funko's way of determining fan favorites and leaving out certain characters, resulting in incomplete teams (X-Men still missing Nightcrawler, Power Rangers classic team were incomplete for years, refusing to produce Applejack and Rarity, ignoring the third protagonist in the Dark Crystal show completely).
-Female character redesign to having smaller, skinnier bodies with tiny hands and feet while the guys stayed big and square. Which means you pay even more if you want a female figure (less material used for the same cost).
-Finally, and this is just my personal opinion: the soulless eye look got on my nerves. I had to put them all in storage except for one because I couldn't stand the eyes staring back at me anymore

The Dollhouse / Mattel's CAVE CLUB
« on: April 10, 2020, 04:35:51 PM »
https://thenerdy.com/mattel-cave-club-dolls/

These news have been out for a while but I only heard of this new line a few days ago when promo images appeared on a toy site.
At first I thought it was by someone else but the Ever After/Monster High trademark torsos and joints gave them away. I was happy to see Mattel is still moving forward with fun/creative fashion doll lines after their "High" franchises are over.

I am extremely loving these. Not sure what happened to Mattel's attempt at launching Wild Hearts Crew but Cave Club seems to be the bigger line with a comic book deal and cartoon attached and scheduled for summer 2020.

They are so obviously inspired by The Flintstones but come on, these look mega cute. I can forgive the Creationist angle with the dinosaurs living with humans because hey look at this gaudy pastel T.Rex they are riding? It has an afro!

Anyways, any time I think I am done with dolls they rope me back in. I hope these find an audience because I am liking these way more than Wild Hearts. They also look a bit like Disney's Moana and Hairdorables to me. And they have a token boy who gets a full head of hair as well and all dolls seem to have flat feet, thank Cave God.
No stripper heels made of stones and vines for you, Pebbles!

Off Topic / Anti-Nostalgia
« on: February 05, 2020, 10:00:34 AM »
So I assume we all know what nostalgia is and a lot of us probably love MLP so much because there is a nostalgia factor to it.

But have some of you experienced a form of "anti-nostalgia"? Is there something from your past - a movie, toy, activity, fandom, etc. - you used to enjoy but upon revisiting it you just don't get what you ever liked about it? Or do you feel stupid/silly/other negative feelings when confronted with it?

I can't think of something right now because most things I unironically enjoyed turned into ironic enjoyment. Such as crazy 80s cartoons, cheesy action movies and such. I realized that stuff was silly and now I am having fun with that silliness. Same goes for certain things I did as a teenager that I am no longer interested in but I can look back and smile (or laugh about myself).

Does anti-nostalgia even exist? We seem to be very influenced by nostalgia in the toy colletor world
What do you think?

Customs / Zaps' customs and rehairs
« on: January 21, 2020, 02:03:29 PM »
My old thread died, so here is a new one.
I want to get back into customizing so I can present something this summer at Nachtlicht Con.

Here are my character concepts:
Spoiler
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Please don't be freaked out by the ugliness. I whipped these up in minutes. My plan is to create a OOAK character artwork for each custom to go along with them. So I didn't feel like making these concepts look pretty  I am going to properly draw them eventually.

So, Stripes is obviously inspired by G1 Zig Zag. I am allowing myself some changes. Her base is a glittery Pinkie Pie.

Burning Heart (based on RD) and Icy Kiss (recolored Pinkie Pie) are my OCs. They are sisters who are polar opposites. Icy Kiss is going to have a unique trotting pose since I am going to make her all red, might as well remodel that boring standing pose.

I am also going to make a 4th based on glittery Twilight but I have yet to come up with a design/idea. Maybe you have suggestions what to make out of her?

I am also planning a yarn-haired G1 custom (marshmallow pony), a G3 alternative rehair and another G4 alternative rehair. Lots of work to do until summer.
Stay tuned

Pony Corral / Please show me your Fashion Style G3s

I'd really like to get one eventually just to have one representative in my collection but I can't decide.

Feel free to post customs, too. I might be into that as well. I mostly want one for the size aspect, as some sort of center piece

Off Topic / What cartoons are you watching rn?
« on: January 16, 2020, 10:59:15 AM »
Just wanted to have a cartoon discussion thread similar to the anime one.
Only rule: please don't use this thread to bash cartoons other people want to talk about in peace. And yes, I know y'all hate "bean mouth style". It is known

So I love me some cute little cartoon about talking animals. Big surprise on this forum! Last year I learned of 101 Dalmatian Street being in the works and I had been looking forward to it ever since. It's a high energy slice of life cartoon and I love the zany characters, especially Dolly (I usually end up loving female characters that aren't required to be girly). I wish I could have Dolly irl, I love active dogs that are a little demanding XD
Not too much to talk about since the show doesn't have an ongoing plot (so far).
I quite like the stylized look of the dogs and that they kept the rough outlines as a nod to the Disney movie where they often didn't clean up the lines thanks to budget cuts, resulting in a sketchy look.

Another Disney show, The Owl House. The first episode has been released and it's pretty much a spiritual successor to Star VS Evil (which I quite loved). It's about a little girl, Luz, who gets sucked into a magic world full of demons. She meets a witch and her enchanted demon friend and becomes her apprentice.
I am very interested how this one will go, especially because it looks promising in terms of epic plot. It has quite some magical girl elements. Anyone seen this yet?

Steven Universe is back with a new season and sadly I guess I am no longer a fan because only the first episode did something for me. Probably because Jasper was in it and she's my fave. Justice for her, etc.
But honestly, I would have been fine if the show would have been over after the movie. It just went into a direction I don't like anymore. Steven is way too powerful and adored by the Diamonds and I just dislike him now as a protagonist. It's like watching a show about Jesus.
