Title: If you have boobs, come in this thread
Post by: dragonfly on March 16, 2018, 03:16:06 PM
Let's talk about bras!

I am a huge fan of the underwire. However, it has recently come to my attention that underwire bras can cause cancer ... and also that not wearing bras doesn't make your boobs saggy. (FTR: I am on board with the former, still require convincing of the latter.)

So I'm looking for some new bras. I need support. I'm a 34D or a DD. My beef with non-underwire bras is that it doesn't provide shape or enough support. I have a couple (believe it or not) supportive bralettes but I am not a fan of the uniboob effect with most of those and sports bras. If I have a choice, I also prefer cute bras. (don't we all?)

Seeking recommendations from experienced fellow individuals with boobs.  :flash:

I hate underwires.  They almost always break and then they poke me so I end up removing them anyway.  And as far as not wearing a bra not making your boobs sag, well, I guess if you're an A or a B you can get away with that, but as a DD, I don't believe it.  Mine get sensitive enough during parts of the month, I don't need their own weight pulling on them all the time, too. (And if you've ever looked through a National Geographic at indigenous women who have never worn bras, they sag, so explain that!) Plus, I hate the padded bras!  I already have enough there, I don't need extra!

If you can find a good non-underwire at Victoria's Secret, it can be worth the price (but man are they expensive!) and usually they have to special order in my size so I generally go to Walmart and buy the Just My Size (I think that's the brand-they come in packages).  I've found that the bras that close in the front work better for me than the ones that clasp in the back.  I feel like they give better support without the wire and they actually cover my whole boob instead of me feeling like I'm only partly in there, though they do have a limited range of colors (white, black, or brown).

Hate underwires. I'm a 36C and I've been using genie bras. No wire and it gives you great support#

Underwire bras causing cancer is a total myth. There is no research that suggests that it is true. There has been one study and it produced no evidence that suggested a link.

On top of that, boobs will sag over time regardless of how often a bra is worn. It's what they do and nothing will prevent that. Again, studies prove this. It can be more supportive to wear one but long term, zero effect on boobs.

I'm also a 34D and recently tried to switch to wireless (because my new washer was destroying my bras, not because of any health reason). I did a ton of searching and comparing and ordered some bras I thought would be good based on reviews and style. I tried for about 2 months but they were not supportive, shaping or concealing enough for me. I felt really self conscious wearing them so I'm back to wired bras again and just wash them separately on gentle cycle. I'm too lazy to hand wash.

If you're willing to spend a little extra - you may want to see if you have a Soma in your area. They sell amazing bras in a variety of sizes and styles! Soma is a little on the pricey side but they make good bras and the quality is definitely there. I haven't tried any without the underwire just yet but I think it would be worth a shot. Good luck! :)

I wouldn't mind going bra-less if it wasn't for the slapping...  my DH says he never notices the sound but ohhhhhh it's so embarrassing to me!

I don't have this problem cause I'm tiny.

Wearing a bra all the time actually causes sagging in later years because apparently you loose all muscle tone and ability to hold them up.  Or so I've heard from friends with bigger boobs.

I can't really go braless but it's near impossible for me to find bras D: Once in awhile I can find a sports bra, other than that my only option is Nordstrom. They seem to be the only company that cares for those of us with tiny rib cages XD (I'm a 30DD or 30DDD) and anything under a 32 band is almost non-existent. Unless of course you count training bras that go up to like a B cup at the biggest. So when I do get some I normally stick the Natori Feathers. They come in a small enough band size for me meaning I don't slip out of the bottom of them and no underwire so it's comfy.

Heh, I have not much expertise when it comes to bra shopping. But I am cursed with my family female curse of large boobs. Personally, I don’t famcy cute looking ones. I mean, if you like it, that’s great. But I don’t. Nobody is going to see it but me, and it doesn’t have any benefit over plain ones. Plain ones are awesome because I get what I need for all my shirts, weather they be black or white. As for wire? I like mine with the wire. I dislike the feeling of no support. Then I’ll be walking around school and nobody wants to see that. We got enough of those big chest no bra girls at school.

Finding bras that fit can be a pain for me, since one of my boobs is a fair bit larger than the other. Thankfully I did manage to find ones that fit wonderfully so I have a few pairs of those, they do have underwires. When I was younger, underwire bras felt really uncomfortable for me so I would only wear ones without wires, but nowadays I don't mind them at all and don't even notice them!

I wear size 40D.

Underwires do not cause cancer.  It's just an urban legend.  (Source: Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation (https://ww5.komen.org/BreastCancer/FactorsThatDoNotIncreaseRisk.html).)

Since you like underwire bras, I would just continue wearing them.

Braless 99% of the time. I'm barely a C cup, but my breasts are insanely fibrosis-y and cyst-y (and have been since the very beginning, so in the 28 years since I've had boobs...not much had changed).  I've felt so much better since I stopped wearing bras.

Which while the studies stating that underwire bras may cause cancer are extremely iffy, the ones telling you "maybe you should avoid wearing underwire bras if you are fibrocystic" are not.

Wanted to add . . . I always go to Nordstroms to be fitted for bras.  Their fitters are highly trained and superb.  If you have requests like "I want a comfortable t-shirt style bra" or "no underwires" or whatever, they will accommodate you.  I have one boob slightly bigger than the other, and the fitter made sure to offer me styles that minimized the difference.

Braless most of the time (only wear my bras with no openings when I go out).

Don't know what size bra I am, because when I wear a bra that opens at the back I can't breathe.  Hence why I wear my bras with no opening at the back.

Gonna second this - they were really helpful for me compared to everywhere else that kept telling me bras that were too big fit. I had already learned how to measure and fit myself (because nobody else could) but it was really an awesome experience. I was able to tell them what I liked about certain bras and disliked and they would find something that fixed those issues. I'm pretty sure the lady spent like an hour with me when I went the first time.

I hate underwire, no matter the bra size they manage to poke me somewhere and at worst they bruise me. In regular bras I am 42F or 42G depending on bra. I have switched to the Genie type of bra almost completely, and while they are not the cutest and might not give the perkiest type of look they are comfortable and don't make me want to burn them in hellfire. -_-

I'm going to be watching this thread closely, I wore thin "training" bras for years and suddenly my body decided it wanted to go through puberty like 10 years too late :P I went and got fitted and bought a few bras from Victoria's Secret just because I needed something to wear out. They have minimal padding which I like, but they have an underwire which I have really mixed feeling on. it's alright sometimes but if I'm doing anything even semi active I think I need something more flexible and comfortable. They're cute though!
I was honestly going braless all through the winter because, hey, I'm wearing like 3 baggy layers anyway, whos going to notice? But now that its summer and some of my shirts fit kind of tight I feel like I need at least a little support. I'll have to try Nordstrom next since you guys have had good experiences there!

I am a size F and I like the underwires, couldn't do without. At work I wear a sportsbra and while I do feel relief taking it off everytime I get home, I really need to put another bra on soon after or it get real uncomfortable. I have one go to store, it's called Change. I think it's Europe only tho. They have my size and preference on file so anyone could pretty much go in and buy a bra for me, just telling who it is for and the only thing to discuss would be the colour. Their bras are expensive but they last several years. Last time I went, before christmas, I got a coupon giving me 500 sek off if I buy for 1000 sek, which basically gives me two bras for free if I buy 4 during march and april. I'm heading there Monday! :D

Highly recommend around June/July if you do ;) That's when they do their big sales and it cuts a lot of the bra prices in half. I always watch for that email before buying bras lol.

I'm a 34E, and I'm an underwire all the way kinda girl. My sports bras have an underwire with a support band as well so the wire doesn't move and chafe. I sleep and mooch around the house bra-less, but if I go out, I like a good shaped cup, I don't like the world seeing whether or not I'm feeling a chill! I love cute bras, but I'm married, so I do get looked at in my underwear on the odd occasion, so that's my reasoning there.

I cant really wear one without getting sick (pressure makes me nautious) so only wear one when I have to.

Underwires tend to poke out and be mean.

Maybe a sport bra would help? Id prefer the elastic myself if its not too tight.

Seriously, I know. I never knew a boob could cause noise either.   I do know that my friend with a rather large set has had a lot of back pain from the weight of hers and wants to do reduction surgery.  That is about all she has ever said.  Everyone in my family is rather large.  No one knows what happened to me except I broke my back as a child and had to wear a tight brace for a year.  They suspect it may have affected my growth.

I hate bras and only wear sports ones, no underwires, and no lace that would drive me crazy. However being a size 34A I have one hard time finding anything in my size!!  :enraged: :enraged: :enraged: :enraged:  Last time  I looked at a place like TJMaxx the A section was literally about 3" wide that is it.  I am still between biggest teen and smallest women's size wise.

I used to wear bras with underwires until they all broke, stabbed me in the boob and were useless without them. So I try to find ones without them. I am a 42F or 42G, not entirely sure, and it's hard to find decent bras that are affordable. It was even worse when I lived in Italy, because literally no shop there caters to people who are larger than a medium in any kind of clothing.

I have troubles with finding a good small size bra. 75% of the time I go without... because it's more comfy that way.

V I really like that forum. :( Bras seem to be a pain for all shapes and sizes.

Hi, this is CG and I am a 30 DDD. Hi big boob people. I hate going braless. They feel super heavy, and they get caught in random places like under my armpit:P haha one can only laugh. Now I have had bra issues dice i was i...year early developer. Love sports bras but hate the uniboob look. I used to plunk down tons of money on bras. I like cute ones too:)

I found AdoreMe .com I have gotten my first bra is January of 2016...its now my used for chores bra. This sucker lasted at $20 plus matching underwear!!! I have gotten 5 now and I love them. I have both wire and no wire.

Here is the trick. If you order 5 bras and return 4 of them they charge a return fee:( so get 1 or two, try them out, not just a few moments but wear it for a few hours in the comfort of your home. Love it, keep it:) hate it print, out the free shipping label and exchange it. No cost to exchange. I love it and they are cute. They even have the super small and the super big sizes and between:)

Omg there's another :O do people tell you that you're wearing the wrong size all the time because supposedly nobody is smaller than a 32? Or that your cup size is impossible because they "don't look like they could be more than a B".

Last time I was measured I believe I was a 34H. I wear sports bras whenever possible, since I dislike underwire. I'd go braless if I could, but I get too self conscious (and ugh, boob sweat!!) However, I have found my Freya bra to be pretty comfortable! I think they're UK based, but I found them in an independent bra store here in the US.

If you can, I'd recommend trying to find an independent place around you! Then you can get measured properly and have the opportunity to try on bra's in-store, so you don't have to bother with shipping.

I also agree that Soma can be good too! I believe they're having a clearance sale online right now.

I couldn't wear underwires until I had reduction surgery (I was a 38DDD at 5' tall...), but now that I can I can't wear padded ones.  The surgeon left me a C cup, I don't need extra padding, AND the padded ones are never "deep" enough, if that makes sense.  Like, the whole boob doesn't fit in the cup.  I don't know if that's because of what shape I am after surgery or what.

I've been measured with band sizes ranging from 32 - 38 with cup sizes ranging from A - DDD. It's kinda ridiculous how many different measurements I get depending on where I go and how they tell me a bra fits when the band is riding up my back or my boobs are falling out of the bottom. Oh or they are compressed against my chest so it looks like there's 4 on each side of my chest. Yeah all those totally fit XD

I actually havent been measured but my current bras are 46D, theyre both underwire and fairly comfortable. I bought them from Torrid on clearance and got both for uhh I think like $30. I only wear bras when I go out to work or anything out. When I am home I am almost always braless cause its more comfortable that.

I don't bother with a bra unless I'm going out and wearing something tight or sheer. I hate bras. I'm far more likely to put some type of tank or cami under my clothes if I can get away with it. Also, underwire bras annoy me to no end--they like to jab me after a few wears. Pass.

I am a 38G and I get my bras at Lane Bryant. When I was thinner I swore by Victoria’s Secret but I grew out of them. Soma has some good ones, but it’s kind of hit or miss. I can only wear underwire because mine got saggy due to weight gain then loss. It hurts for me to go bra-less because the skin on my chest is stretched.

I'm a 32 B, I think, but I rarely wear a bra unless it's socially polite. I don't like underwire so I can't be much help.
I just wanted to point out/agree that not wearing a bra helps you prevent sagging. People who live active lives and don't wear any kind of support end up with the firmest, albeit flattest, boobs. They aren't perky but they definitely aren't saggy.

Hope you find some advice and not only small people uniting.
