Can you paint over Sculpey glaze?
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:08:34 PM »
My Google searches aren't pulling up anything even remotely helpful. :/

Long story short I have a few pieces that were finished and glazed (Sculpey Gloss glaze) and now need to be changed. I don't want to waste even more clay on this stuff and would rather just buy some paint, but I've never painted clay at all so I don't know what kind(s), if any, would even work over glaze.

Hmm, I have no experience with Sculpey Glaze. What is it made of, is there any info on the bottle? Acrylic paints usually work on almost any type of surface but I can only guess. I use the same paints for my pony customs as well as clay (polymer clays and Apoxie Sculpt), and I've used them over polyurethane varnish too. I can warmly recommend priming the clay with e.g. gesso prior to painting, it helps the paint to stick better and thus gives you a more even result with less coats. Hope this helps!

The bottle doesn't list any ingredients and I can't find a list of them anywhere. I was thinking maybe acrylic, but I've never painted Sculpey at all so I really don't know anything about it. Thanks for your advice! :) I have an unglazed figure I need to paint too, so it definitely helps.
