Title: Disapointed in DJ pony
Post by: sd_dreamcrystal on November 19, 2012, 12:33:38 PM
Soooo I got DJ pony in finally and I must say... MAJOR disappointment on how Hasbro handled her Shades. I know there was a big thing about her shades when she first showed up and I knew what to expect for the most part... but seriously? A simple solution for them would have been to -angle- the shades to cover the eyes.

Other than that, she's a fine pony and my first one with the raised leg that isn't a glimmerwing

I think they should of made them removable, so her eyes would be underneath, and that fixes the line problem.

I'm sorry you're disappointed with you're pony, that's always sad times. Buuttt....I haven't heard of the problem? Probably due to being in the UK and relatively new on the forum.

What is up with the shades/eyes? Or does someone have a picture?

Thanks ^_^

her shades aren't sitting where the eyes should be on the mould. So you can see where her eyes should be, but there's nothing there, and her shades are further forward.

It would probably be too difficult to make removable ones. Besides, bronies got mad when her eyes were purple in the show instead of red in the fandom, so who knows what would have happened.

Yeah, I thought I wanted her  . . .I saw her at a TRU - and decided not to buy her. Its pretty bad!

I too was annoyed when I realized that Hasbro had simply stamped her shades over a standard Rarity face mold.  If you don't look at it up close, then it's not really noticeable.  Still, it would have been nicer if Hasbro had put just a tad bit of effort into her.

I really wasn't too bothered by it myself. It seems typical of toy companies to skimp on the gift sets. (I've seen it many times in wrestling action figures as well)

Sometimes the plastic used will be different or details will be omitted, or they just plain cut corners.

I still can hope for a regular Lemony Gem and DJ Pon-3...I don't dig the sparkly cutie marks.

i think this is very embarrassing of a big famous toy company to do this and lazy.
standards have dropped big time over the years

You know, I thought it'd bug me, but already I've gotten used to it. It helps that it's only visible to me when she's up close.

I am glad I have this pony in my collection, but I too thought the way they handled the eyes was pretty pathetic.

I am not sure how possible it is to make removeable glasses for a G4. But they could have at least tried a little harder with the pain job. It looks kinda tacky the way they did it.

The shades need to be angled more, and that would have fixed the whole problem. They look more like John Lennon shades instead of DJ Pon3 shades. I noticed they have that problem on pretty much all of their ponies, though. The eyes are either tilted too far forward or to far back. If they fixed that one little problem, and paid more attention to how the eyes are spaced and proportioned on the 2d cartoon, the ponies would look ten thousand times better, imo. Also please tell me I'm not the only one who cringed and started bashing her head against a wall when I saw Shining Armor's eyes in the toy store.

Everyone seems so concerned with the glasses fitting over the indent for the eye. That doesn't bother me half as much as the fact that they left off her eyelashes. I ended up painting some on mine.
Though of course removable glasses with her eyes underneath would have been ideal.

I agree, they could have angled the glasses more or made removable ones. She's definitely not one of my favoirtes because of this. And I really like her colors and symbol, but those glasses... :(

I agree that the stamped on glasses which don't even fit her eye indents were a letdown. I understand that it wasn't likely for us to get removable glasses because of cost, but Hasbro could have at least adjusted the shape/positioning of the shades a bit so they fit her face.

Here is a modified version I made which has removable shades and painted eyes next to the factory original, just for fun.  :)

They actually are magenta, like Rainbow Dash's. Been confirmed by staff.

Shoulda made the glasses even an accessory or something! XD

BTW, AWESOME custom Agnusdei

Nice modded DJ, agnusdei
I might mod mine, don't know yet though... I'd have to buy a repeat pony if I wanted to make another version of her... which I really don't want to XD

Yes it would have cost more but considering we already have ponies with glasses, i.e. FS Rainbow Dash and even the cheap little, but appropriate sized, glasses which are being released with the new CE wave of ponies for Twilight Sparkle, I don't know if it would have been that mammoth a cost that it could not have been done. Seems super lazy even for Hasbro but alas at the price point of the line we cant really expect proper collectors quality and standards.

*swoops into thread* I will never miss an opportunity to complain about this pony! >.<

DJ is one of my favorite background characters from the show, and it's a total shame that Hasbro went such a cheap route on this toy... in what was supposed to be a special collector's set made specifically for the fans!

I have NEVER in all my years of wandering the toy aisles found a toy that specifically was painted to totally ignore the premade mold lines. That just speaks of laziness on the part of the company and cutting corners, and is a snub to the collectors, implying we will buy just anything as long as it says 'My Little Pony' on it, never mind the quality.

And this isn't the only time Hasbro has done it. The FS Shining Armor uses the same head mold as Rarity, etc so the 'male' eyes are painted over the female eye spots, and they don't even fit!

Also the new crystal blind bags have eyes that are half-closed or a different shape than usual, so they don't match up with the eye holes made into the molds, either!

Gaaaaaaah Hasbro you are so lazy. It bugs me like crazy! Either make a new head mold, or choose a character that doesn't need special eyes that don't fit the eye sockets you already have! >.<

Sincerely, your truly irate fan

This sums up my thought very well. Many people adore Vinyl Scratch, and Hasbro could of been a little more good with quality since it is a popular pony.

I agree the painted glasses/superimposed on eye-spots that don't line up was a major FAIL by Hasbro.   I guess they didn't want to fork over the .2 extra production cost for removable glasses...

I am also very disappointed that the FS Shining Armor has the same body and face mold as Rarity- especially when the cartoons show very different face structures between the boys and the girls...

I could be remembering wrong but I saw a FS Shining Armor online and the photo showed a clear oval circle indent in the eye position, while SA's eye paint was nowhere close to oval in shape, so it looked very awkward. I'll see if I can find a photo.

This is the best I could find. Kinda hard to make out and you'll need to full-view to see it, but you can see there's a circular eye shape that doesn't match up with SA's paint.

They do have the eye indents, I can see them on my FS ponies but because the painted eye shapes fit the indents they are harder to see

Honestly, I wish they would be more considerate with how they do the eyes for the ponies. There are some that i have that just plain bother me but DJ takes the cake on the list.

If they ever do rerelease DJ (I doubt it but you never know) I hope they do something different with the shades :|

They don't truly have indents, try feeling the face of one compared to a regular size brushable. Smooth and flat. :/
The cheek below the eye is NOT an ;indent' it's just a cheek...

Hmm well I don't collect the FS so I can't say personally, but the picture is pretty clear, to me. And I recall seeing the box in the store and seeing how the paint on SA's eyes didn't match up with the shape of the eye.

Regardless, the point is that many times Hasbro takes shortcuts and uses a head mold that doesn't really match with the paint job they choose for the character, which is cheap and tacky to do, VERY obvious for both collectors and kids who like to play with the toys, and just a general snub to those of us who care about the quality of our collections.

DJ was the main reason I wanted the set because I think she is such a cool background pony, but I don't think I will be buying it now because of that. It just looks so... weird.

Yeah I think DJ looks pretty cheap. =( If they had done removable glasses and given her real eyes, I probably would have actually bought that set. But remember guys, this IS Hasbro...there could still be a chance that they will re-release her in the future...although I do have my doubts that they'd do anything different about the eyes lol. But you never know!
