Rehairing/rooting CAM with hard Cap..
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:08:20 AM »
I know people here have done it before.. I vaguely remember someone burned the holes in there with a hot needle or something? I have a bunch of girls with a hard cap and I don't want to give everyone wigs, since the selection is somewhat limited that way. ;>

OK, so basically.. what's good techniques to get those girls some hair? Burning/drilling holes? Can you use the knot method then? Will they stay in since the holes will most likely not be flexible and won't close up after the knot.. will I need glue to secure it?
I think some people also used some kind of surrogate-cap from the CAM-wigs and such? Yeah.. pretty clueless here as you can see. :,c
Every advice is welcome!

Im curious with the donor scalps, how do you put the donor scalp in? Glue? Sewing? I cannot begin to imagine how hard it might be to sew a scalp into that hole.

I struggled with this problem a few months ago. I ended up gathering some good advice here and started experimenting.
I managed to create awesome surrogate scalps/scalp pieces with a mix of stretchy fabric and a kind of glue ^^
Le thread be here

replacing the hard cap is a modrate-hard business. You either cut or pry it out, or a combination of both. Not easy and time consuming but not quite as bad as dehairing. Then you find a peice if plastic. It can be from a donor doll or from a wig cap, you just wanna make sure you can actually get your needle through it and the plastic below without killing yourself or mangling your project. Cut said plastic to the right size. You want it to fit inside basically flush. Then you either glue or sew - be warned, sewing is not easy. I sew, it's more secure. ALL THE WAY AROUND. Otherwise it shifts and moves while you're working. Use the hair color you're going to be predominantly working with. Et voila~ you now have a scalp you can rooth through using the knot method.

Experimenting is best. It took me quite a few tries to figure out the best way for me, but I settled on sewing as the most secure that also insures a nice look.

Thank you so much for sharing those details with us!

When you sew, are you able to push the needle through easily with your fingers, or do you use pliers? Or heat the needle tip before each pass? And what sort of thread do you use? Regular cotton sewing thread? Clear fishing line type stuff?

I use hair. Thinner strands than a plug, but enough that it doesn't break. Don't try and keep the needle threaded, just rethread. It's easier that way. I don't usually have to resort to heating or pliers. Next time I do one, I'll take a pic of how it looks, but srsly, it's an undertaking not for the faint of heart.

Sewing! Brilliant! I performed my first "successful" (I use quotes because I haven't actually tried cramming hair into it yet) scalp transplant last night but used Fabritac glue instead, and had to hold it in place forever to get it to dry. A needle and thread sounds like the absolutely perfect solution.

So, that's how I does it. One wig will do two replacement scalps.

I can't wait to see that doll complete, Ravie!  I've always wanted green hair for my CAM Dragon:)  I think I've decided to do something different, though.  Maybe if I ever stumble across another, and money to get the job done
I won't be checking this site anymore for messages.  If you need me, you can contact me at the MHArena :bigups:
