We got pet rats! They're just the cutest things. The guinea pigs were not amused with them lol:)

The two on the left are Carlos and Splodge and they're Lyall's babies. Carlos is the leader we think because he's the most confident. Splodge, we're a little concerned about because he doesn't seem very social with his brothers and seems pretty fearful. Carlos looks out for Splodge though, it's so sweet:)

Their cage is a wee bit small, but they were going to be sold on if we couldn't take them home. We have a big massive four layer cage ordered and due to be delivered in a few days.




If there are any rat lovers out there, I'd love any advice you can offer. I know all the basic stuff but you can't beat personal experience:)

Awwwww, I love ratties!!!  I used to have them too.  In fact, my user name is one of my dear departed babies, Zenna (affectionately known as "The Bug"), who lived to be almost 4.  Let me gather up the info I have found useful and post that for you

Alright, info (I was eating and wanted to finish my food so I could pay attention to my typing lol).

It's good that you're getting them a new cage, rats love space to run!  Some of mine loved having wheels to run around in (another just liked to sleep in the wheel, lol).  ALL rats love hammocks, so I would definitely buy some of those.  It's cheapest to make your own with rectangles of polar fleece and little O hooks (like the tiny shower curtain things).  The glass water bottles are the best because they're sanitary, easy to clean, and hard to chew.  Rats are smart and get bored easily (it's wonderful that you got a full "pack"), so buy lots of toys and rotate them.  I liked to buy bird toys that could hang from the different levels of the cage, since they were pretty cheap.  Again, avoid plastic.  I used to hide seeds and nuts in the bedding when I would clean the cage, they loved it!  Unsalted peanuts (in their shells) and sunflower seeds (the kind you would put in a bird feeder) were popular.  As for food, I used to make my own with this recipe:  http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html.  I would also supplement that with veggies and fruits whenever I could.  Yogies are the best treats you can buy, they're little tiny yogurt drops and I'm pretty sure that they're rat crack lol.  Mine liked the strawberry flavor best (and it was the kind that was sold out usually, so I think that other people's rats liked it best too).

What else?  All of my rats hated those plastic balls, except Zenna.  She loved being able to run around!  You can give them toilet paper rolls when they're out and they will shred them for their nests.  Also, tissue boxes with the plastic torn out make great forts.

Rats!  I love rats!  Unfortunately I am allergic to them.  :c  Didn't sto me from having five of them and playing with them all the time, though lol  These little guys are adorable!

They also like to play "Get the Rat".  My Matthias did, anyway.  "chase" him with your hand, then gently tickle or bowl him over, then let him chase your hand!  Matthias used to pounce on my hand lick the hell out of it, then run.

Beautiful ratties! I'd adore to have some of my own, only the mother doesn't like them and I have a very naughty little kitty..

awww i love rats i had one he was my baby he used to sit on my shoulder and stay there for hours he also loved hiding in my hood or in the pocket of my hoodie it was funny because id forget he was there and go out with him still there.

Theyre so sweet! I have guinea pigs as well, although mine arent very sociable lol
