Title: Let's talk about G3s!
Post by: Bebopgroove on February 18, 2018, 09:38:00 AM
I had a few questions about the line that I'm just genuinely curious about, so I made a thread where we can discuss just random G3 stuff. I figured I could also do this with the other gens depending on where this goes (or someone else can do it too, I don't care).

This was the line I got into when I first started collecting, back in 2004 when the Butterfly Island series started hitting shelves (I think, or close to it). I had just gotten my childhood G1s out of storage, and also just got my drivers license (which really made all the difference because I could go out and pony-hunt to my heart's content, somewhat). Berry-Pickin Butterscotch ended up being my very first G3, followed by Strawberry Swirl (the one that came with the purse/bag/whatever it was).

However, one of my biggest gripes about this gen was the severe lack of pegasus and unicorns, as the G3 line is almost entirely all earth-ponies. If not for that nitpick, I would have considered the gen almost perfect alongside the G1s. Why did Hasbro limit the other species so greatly? Why were the pegasus only released in the handful, and the unicorns even less so? Did Hasbro believe that kids wouldn't like them? Was it a trend started by the G2s (which really didn't have any pegasus depending on how you look at it)?

Then of course, just as the G3 line was becoming diversified with types and gimmicks and species and babies making them almost comparable to G1s in charm - Hasbro ended it all with their push towards the Core 7 characters.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, opinions, and stories!

I love G3s. They're my second favorite gen and what pulled me back into MLP. Beautiful and diverse. My first was a four pack of Star Dasher, Rainbowdash, Denim Blue and Sparkleworks.

My daughter was at the right age to get into it being a toddler at the time. Still has most of her ponies too.

I do agree about the lack of unicorns and other species. The G3 unicorns have less members then Breezies!

I wonder how many ponies in all there are? Not counting re-releases.

I don't know why Hasbro limits other species. Perhaps its easier and cheaper to produce regular ones?

I've always noticed this trend in fakies as well. There are always more regular ponies then pegasus,  unicorns, or flying unicorns.

In fact earth ponies take up the bulk of every gen. Never has another species outnumbered them.

It's funny you raise this. A couple of days ago I stumbled onto a really old archived Arena thread where people were criticising G3 for having repetitive symbols and being less creative than G1. This was pre-G4 and I looked at it and thought about how much people now say G3 was really creative compared to mane 6 and it's so interesting how perspective changes opinions.

I like G3. They are no G1, but they are probably my 2nd favourite generation. I certainly have more of them than I do G2 or G4 but they are also the only generation I have sold some of and not regretted losing them. I guess my collection is bigger than I intended but more in tune with the ones I like most rather than trying to have everything.

My first G3 was Rainbow Dash who I wanted to graduate with in 2003. I had one sent from the US - I think it was Silverfall, actually - but she didn't arrive. Then they appeared in the UK, in the TRU near where a friend lived, so she got me one. Dash and I graduated safely, Dash in gown and hat too :) Have photos somewhere. THe other Dash eventually arrived and I was told I should keep her, so I have. I still have her as well. I love that Rainbow Dash. I can't stand G4 Dash. Let's just leave it there.

My main bugbear with G3 was the disproportionate amount of US exclusives because of the stupid number of store exclusives that didn't travel. Target had lots and it was hit or miss if we got TRU ones - mostly not, I think. For a while we had seasons but then they came out in the US as wel, except Winter Snow who had her bad copy Crystal Crown (aka Crystal Clone) and that put paid to any hope of trading ponies from here for ponies from there. It got expensive, exhausting and frustrating to keep up. Around 2006ish I burned out and couldn't keep up with them any more.

It's taken till now for me to really appreciate them again. Ironically some of the exclusives, like the later breezies, I missed. But I like G3. I hate the end of G3, though, with the repetitive core 7. It went downhill from there in terms of originality and variety, and I don't see it changing any time soon.

I like the pegasus ponies (not the ones with big weird wings though) and have hunted most of them down, although I think I sold Coconut Grove because her smell is horrible. Aside all the Sweetie Belles (from which spawned both Sweetie Belle G4 and Rarity G4), and the several Rarities, I can only think of Brights Brightly (worst name ever), and the blue unicorn whose name I can't remember. Oh, and Lily Lightly, who...erm...I am not really a fan :/ No unicorn babies was a shame. Could have done with more sooner. But love the Breezies. Very effective evolution from Flutter Ponies and wingers but different enough and more durable.

At least G3 pegasus ponies mostly had their wings attached (unless part of a costume). Unlike G2, which was always a negative for me with G2.

Which is strange. Even then I thought they were just as unique in G1, in color scheme and symbol. They did color schemes I'd never seen before.

There are 23 pegasus. Not counting the rereleases of Starcatcher and Starsong.

I love and plan to get most of them, barring Morning Monarch, Hidden Treasure, Baby Mochanut, Twilight Pink and Twirlerina.

Pearly Pie and Tiramisu are alright.

On the fence about Starsong.

I have Star Catcher (Decorator)
Silver Glow
Aurora Mist
Royal Rose

Still need:
Baby Honolulu
Twinkle Bloom
Thistle Whistle
Island Delight
Windy Wisp
Coconut Grove
Cloud Climber
Daisy May

I doubt I'll ever get Star Flight, Heart Bright and Snow'El.

I'm a bit confused about how to think of them. I certainly don't like them as much as G1 and I find them a bit hard to separate from one another. This is probably due to the lack of fantasy elements involved that are prevalent in G1 and G4. I still buy them when I come across them, but I'm not really actively seeking any of them.
I wish I could grow more fond of them, as they were the first gen I started buying when I spread from collecting only G4 and started to grow interested in older gens.

I love G3s, right next to my G1s. I actually created a file with a list of all the ponies in G3, including variants that was originally on the mylittlewiki page. Since then my computer had died that had all the info and the link is broken on the wiki page, so maybe someday I will go through them all again and make a new list....

I love the way they look. Think they were great.

Did you know there was a variant of Ribbon wishes where her hair started with a blue instead of purple? A lot of people don't :)

I had Ribbon Wishes. I can't find a record of selling her. I can't find her. Hrm. I wonder what happened there.

I don't remember which version it was. It's true. I didn't know there was a variation xD.

I sold Coconut Grove and Island Delight. I don't really mind that I did but I guess I'm not going for pegasus completion. I love Twirlerina. She reminds me of Wind Whistler. And I picked up Windy Wisp at the toy fair. Don't remember seeing her in stores, she's very pretty.

Twilight Pink used to live on my desk at work. She's a sentimental special G3 to me - she and Shenanigans in the school outfit, who I also had on my desk there for a bit. My colleagues used to decorate Twilight Pink. At one point she had a small Welsh flag, a daisy hair adornment made of circular stickers and a learner driver plate. I feel like she and Windy Wisp are long lost buddies. They remind me of each other <3.

Yeah I ended up selling almost all my g3 ponies 3 years back. Needed the funds at the time, but doesn't mean I don't regret it. I still Have Tink-a-tink-a-too II MIB, Crystal Lace MIB, Starbeam MIB, the variant ribbon wishes, and the 2010 Comic Con pony MIB...

sigh...miss all my other ones...

I had a panic moment where I thought I sold my MIB Daybreak as I couldn't find her. I ended up buying a loose one at the toy fair and then found the MIB one. But now I can't part with either. Her colours are so perfect.

I don't think I regret the ones I sold. I'm not sure even which ones I did, but mostly they were gem ones. Gem Blossom...etc...and scented ones. Which I have now ruined by accidentally buying Island Paradise at the toy fair...or whatever her name is. She's quarantined at the moment, but it's too late. The loose G3 in my room already smell ><

Edit to add: apparently according to my email I tried to sell Ribbon Wishes. Several times. But didn't succeed. So unless she went to a carboot sale, which she might have, she ought to be here...Oh well. I have had G3 ponies coming out of all weird places lately, so who knows.

G3 is actually my least favorite gen  I don't like the poses, colors, shimmery bodies, cutesy cutie marks, and general asthetic. They just aren't my style I guess, but I don't hate them! Although, Starsong, which is one of my favorite ponies ever, is a G3, so... I did have G3s as a kid though, so they will always be my childhood gen :)

The Ribbon Wishes variant is so beautiful! I hope that one day I’ll get her

G3 is my favourite generation. Design and ponywise, it’s level with g1, but it’s the gen I grew up with, which is why I think I like it more :) Also, Baby Pink Sunsparkle is a g3

The only thing I’m not happy with is all the USA exclusives, I have over 100 of those missing vs under 30 regular ones! I wish they at least made the unis and pegs in the episodes, their designs were so pretty!

I’ll share my story of loving g3 below (it could be a lot of rambling, just a heads up)
When g3 started, I was 2! (No Pink Sunsparkle for me ;() I got 3 ponies when I was very little, all on different years : Periwinkle, Magic Marigold and Wind Drifter. I had fakies too. I loved styling their hair the most, but I was never that into them.

Fast forward to about 9 years old:
I discovered the internet and decided to try and find the names of my ponies, just for fun. I wasn’t very good at searching, and I couldn’t find their names lol! Then the next day I found strawberry reef. I saw the crazy amount of g3s and jokingly said that I wanted them all! Four that stood out to me were - kimono, water fire, ribbon wishes and wondermint. From then on I don’t remember much, just that I stalked the forums every day, until I was finally old enough to join. The show and tell section was my favourite!

Speaking now, I’m pleased to say I have my four dream ponies and have quite the herd! All gens, but mainly g1 and g3. I have built it through car boot sales, friends, and more recently, ponycon.
(I apologise for that ramble)
Mlp Sunsparkle x

I am glad that with G4 Hasbro have got their act together with the exclusives and having other stores in other countries taking them. With G3 it was really demoralising how much more money had to be outlaid to get the same ponies here once shipping and import duty had been taken into consideration.

I dunno which US ones I'm missing because I haven't tried to get them all, and I'm grateful to have had a good US friend who helped me with a lot until I burned out...but the whole thing turned me off G3. If Hasbro didn't think we mattered, then why spend 3x the amount of money on their toys...?

I love the g3s! I don't have a large collection of them, but am slowly building it up. They were on the shelves (crystal princess line?) when I started collecting so g3s are nostalgic to me in that sense. Plus, I think they're super cute! SLH ponies are probably my favourites. All that lovely, lovely hair. :lovey:

I got into gen 3 thanks to a pinkie pie that got balled up in snow by a snow plow, I found them with her head and tail sticking out. I thought that was all that was left of them, but nope, they were fine except a few scrapes, and very faded hair. They were so dirty the service desk did not want them, so in my pocket they went, and then came home with me.

I adore G3! It's my second favorite generation, very closely behind G1! As you said OP, one major drawback is that it has so little Pegasi and Unicorns (Unicorns especially) compared to Earth ponies. But despite that, there's still a huge variety of ponies and poses! The quality of the ponies themselves (and the playsets) is also really good, finding good condition G3s is very easy!

While G1's my favorite generation, I think I have the more G3s than I have ponies in other generations (if we just count regular ponies, that is). G3 is a such a good generation, I just wish they had more Pegasi and Unicorns! Speaking of G3 Pegasi though, all the ones we do have are beautiful.

This reminded me of the old Rereleases Encyclopedia! It went offline recently, and now the URL just returns the 404 not found error :/ But when it wasn't up, it had the differences catalogued between any G3 with multiple editions. Super helpful. Used it a lot to ID my thrift finds.
I love G3! They were my childhood pony, and I'm so glad they're so common to find at thrift stores now. I find them about as often as I find G1s.

G3 was my g1 if that makes sense, I grew up with them and they were the ponies I knew and loved. But even as a kid watching g1 cartoons I thought g1 had prettier ponies, more exciting stories, and was disappointed that my kid sister and I easily collected all the unicorns and pegusus. We always tended to play with our ponies in a g1 style and so in my early teen years when I realized I could buy up all the g1 ponies I’d fallen in love with in childhood I did. I didn’t give g3 much of a thought since.

After watching my younger cousins play with g4 and quickly loose interest as they lack enough characters to really “collect” I feel nostalgic for my own g3s. They were pretty cute and were really a decent value for the price at the time. I’m somewhat worried there won’t be a gen as diverse as even g3 was again and it makes me a little sad.

Even if g3 was too pink and too cutesy at times, it has a pretty place in my memory. Sometimes I feel sad that I don’t have any childhood memories playing with g1’s unlike so many other collectors but g3’s do deep down have some of the fondness to them for me, that classics like Peachy, Melody, and Firefly do for older collectors.

I don't have the same connection to G3 as I do g1 but I still like them and have a lot even after selling on some.

I do find the lack of unicorns in this gen a real short sight on Hasbro's part. It's a line of fantasy horses and the unicorn is the queen of fantasy horses.  It just didn't make any sense.

But one of the things G3 got right was the diversity in the hair patterns.  I really like how there were different types of hair patterns/color combos that a pony could have.

I love G3's. I have a massive collection of them with doubles.  I have much of the Ponyville small ponies too which I really liked.  I have a few MIB as well and there are still more I want to get.    It did seem like there was an overabundance of celestial themes, but that is usually very well received by collectors. I am not so much into that though.  I was so happy with the line, I wanted to buy them all and never had enough money to get them all.  There are several I can still remember picking up in the store to purchase and putting them back...only to wish now I had them.

I really like G3s!  I love their faces and their cute ears.  Best ears of any generation imo.

But man, I really don't get the lack of pegasi and unicorns.  I was at SDCC shortly after Star Catcher was released--the one with cloth wings, she was the first G3 pegasus--and I was chatting with Hasbro employees at their booth.  And they something about releasing her as a single "to see if there was an interest in pegasus ponies."  And I was just thinking "Of course there's an interest??  How many kids are interested in fantasy horses, but not unicorns and pegasi?"

The other thing I don't like is symbols only being on one side.   Does it really save that much money to only do it on one side?  *sigh*

Other than that, though, great line.  Lots of beautiful and varied ponies.  Plus those scooters that you could pull back and use to knock over other ponies, lol.

I grew up with G1 ponies and have about 60 of them. My entire original herd and my cousins that she didn't want anymore. Nothing is quite the same as the ones you grew up loving and playing with.

However that being said, I LOVE G3! They are the only ones that I have been excited to get a complete collection of. I was SO excited when I heard they were bringing ponies back and I hunted them down and bough the first wave. I was hooked. I loved the body proportions, the ears and they eyes. I loved everything about them. Sure I missed the unicorns and pegasus ponies but these were much more like the G1 ponies with their unique ponies in each series(until the end, 3.5). G3 really makes up the bulk of my collection. I have almost every one, including many of the rares and proto types. I think the only thing I wish they had done that they didn't do was add unicorn and pegasus ponies sooner, more baby ponies and boys.

I really wish I had pictures of my collection to share in this thread. When I get them all out again I will share some pictures!
I would love to see some some pictures of the G3 ponies people most love. I LOVE seeing the hair styles people come up with and the photogenic qualities of G3.

I looove G3!

I do agree that there was a lack of unis and pegs :(
Also plenty of the ponies seem quite repetitive to me, with very similar colour schemes popping up multiple times.

But! Gosh they are gorgeous. I love the overall shape of them and there are some adorable poses, as well as fun gimmicks like the gradient legs and the collector art ponies...
Also I really love how detailed the eyes are in particular, with their multiple colours, and the tiny details like the hearts or stars in them!

I also agree that it's sad we didn't see so much diversity with pony races. Imgaine how cute g3 seaponies would've been! But at least we did have a lot of different characters before they started the core7 :)

I am expecting not to be able to afford the pegasus Snow'el, so like LAW, I guess she's probably off my list for now. Really pretty though.

I grew up with G1 and started collecting them again in my mid twenties and, of course, there's a huge amount of nostalgia when it comes to childhood stuff. But, it was also around that time that I realised Hasbro were still making and releasing MLP in the shops, and I began buying G3 ponies from Asda here in the UK. I still remember my excitement at seeing them all brand new and shiny

So, I also have nostalgia for G3s because it seemed magical to me to be able to actually go into a store and buy MLP again MIB!  :)

I only got into G2 much later and although I have quite a decent collection of them, I have never developed an emotional attachment to them. I also have a huge collection of G4s but again, no nostaligic connection to them...So yeah, emotinally it's really G1 and G3 for me.

I don't really mind the lack of Unis and Pegs so much. To me, it makes the ones we *do* have way more special because they're so rare. I have Morning Monarch, Aurora Mist, Daisy May, Baby Honolu-loo, Silver Glow, Brights Brightly (agree with Taffeta - terrible name, lol!), Hidden Treasure, Sunrise Song (gorgeous!) and Whistle Wishes. I would love to get Coconut Grove and Royal Rose at some point as well...

My nitpick with G3 is with the number of pink ponies and the lack of imagination with regards to a lot of their symbols. For example Amberlocks, Sew-and-Sew and Savannah Sage all have very "something and nothing" symbols when compared with the symbols of say Shenanigans, Denim Blue and Island Rainbow. I feel as if many times the symbol does't do justice to the pony. I guess I just like bold designs...

What I am completely OBSESSED with are the Winter Series ponies!!!  :lovey: :lovey: :lovey: I have literally no idea why, but somehow they have just totally captured my imagination and I adore them. I have them all MIB and love nothing better than to line them all up and gaze lovingly at them. My absolute favourite is Snowflake with a close runner up being Velvet Bow (*love* her grey colour!)...

I also love the charms that some G3s came with and the sheer variety of colours, poses and hair.

The only other issue I have (and some might say it's a good thing!) is the sheer number of the blighters! I don't have enough space (or money!) to collect all the ones I like (which are *many*) and I have a feeling I'll still be trying to collect them when I'm in my 70s!

As much as I love the G2s, the G3s were really exciting when they came out because they were so reminiscent of G1s in a lot of ways. The lack of Pegasus and unicorns (especially unicorns) was really disappointing though. As was the lack of good storytelling, imo. There were brief glimpses of individual pony personalities in the cartoons, but overall they remind me of the bushwoolies in G1, going along with whatever the last person has suggested.

It was a frustrating gen to collect in Canada, as well. Not only did we not get most of the store exclusives, we would randomly miss out on whole waves of ponies - most of the unicorns did not come to Canada. It was hard to anticipate what would or wouldn't show up locally.

I also agree that it's sad we didn't see so much diversity with pony races. Imgaine how cute g3 seaponies would've been! But at least we did have a lot of different characters before they started the core7 :)

I meant to add a pic to my last post, but here it is now xD

G3s are super photogenic IMO xD

I love the pics Shaiyeh! :D

I'm currently going through all of mine right now and trying to sort, ID, and match accessories.. And I have to say that the Jewel ponies have become some of my favorites. I ended up with more of them plus ones I didn't have after a friend gave me some of her doubles :D

Also, what is everyone's opinion on detinseling? I have some in my collection I had detinseled due to their tinsel being beyond any help, but others I've kept their tinsel if I can help it.

I love the jewel ponies too! They are so pretty!
As for detinselling, I have done it to a few ponies who had awful hair:
Water fire with a serious haircut (partially buzzed) - a lot was already gone
Fancy free - became so bad that the pieces split into two and broke off, not a full detinsel but mostly gone.
Sweet sparkle - intentional detinsel, she was full of rust and had such frizzy hair! It wouldn’t calm down at all and her tinsel was wretched so I took it all out of her mane. I left her tail for now so I could see the difference.

I would only do it if the tinsel was beyond hope and ruining the hair. Otherwise I just leave it and try not to brush my tinsel ponies unless I’m washing them.

I actually don't care much for the unicorns. There seem to be more in the cartoon. Why couldn't we get more of those?

A lot of the color schemes don't mesh well and only three of them have interesting symbols that aren't flowers and hearts. I have and love Valentine Sweetie Belle, because my kid didn't like her and was going to put her in the charity bag. (Pity I didn't save Kimono and earth Cheerilee.)

I do intend to try and snag Sunrise Song, she's my favorite.

Styling Cheerilee is one of my ultimate G3 grails.

I want to give Brights Brightly a chance, even though I'm on the fence about her and I think her name is stupid.

I don't like Whistle Wishes. Something about her is off-putting, even though her colors, symbols and pose are right up my alley.

Rarity out of nowhere, is growing on me.

Lily Lightly's gimmick puts me off. Shame, she's got nice colors and a lovely symbol.

Don't like Garden Wishes. Or was it Garden Glade?

I wish we'd gotten more Whistle Wishes posed ponies. Its my favorite G3 unicorn pose.

DD has Whistle Wishes and Sunrise Song. Still needs Brighty.

Whistle Wishes and Sunrise Song are probably the two G3 unicorns I like the most.. Especially Sunrise Song because the moment I saw her new on release, I was like "G3 Mimic!"
And shame we didn't get a regular sized unicorn Cheerilee, though it's not like I don't have enough purple/pink G3s as it is

Haha xD she looks so pleased with herself, out in the snow in her gear and showing off xD <3. Is that the original Snow'el? I feel I have her somewhere.

I am expecting not to be able to afford the pegasus Snow'el, so like LAW, I guess she's probably off my list for now. Really pretty though.

It is, I have her loose and MIB because she's one of my favourites :lovey: (although I'd have had her just MIB if it wasn't for the fact that someone accidentally stepped on my first one's box x_____x it was completely destroyed xD positive part of that is I got to unbox my favourite g3 pony and play around with her! xD)

I dunno, I think she looks so pleased with herself, I'd imagine she engineered the whole thing! I really wish the UK had had those ponies. I have some of them and so does sister thanks to amazing American friend but it's not the same. (Apparently we don't have Christmas, Valentines, Hallowe'en in the UK, according to G3 Hasbro. Apparently though we do have Easter, but it involves weird plastic egg packaged ponies with bunny ears, and that's about it... And that egg is hard to store. I have a Daisyjo one and she's so cute but she rolls around the floor in that egg way too easily.

...On topic. I had to google Sunrise Song. I didn't know about her, but not really that keen. Maybe if I saw one in real life. Rarity is my pink unicorn of choice I guess. I periodically forget brights's name because it's stupid and she's pretty. I like Whistle Wishes but another stupid name.

Also had to look up Garden Wishes. Another pink unicorn. Right now sticking to Rarity.

I grew up with G3, though I also loved g1 and g2 as a kid. I didn't like the lack of unicorns and pegasi but it didn't stop me from buying ponies. I had quite a collection for a kid, mostly white g3, before I purged a few years ago by selling many to my friends. I can't fathom why they limited the pony diversity.

I grew up (as an older child) collecting G3s. I LOVED their names, themes, poses, and unique colours! As a G1 fan, it was great to see old names with new looks too. The points/rewards system was a nice bonus.

Being in Canada, I had to go to the US to get a lot of the Target exclusives. I own most of the first 3 years of the G3s.

When the G4s came out, I favoured the G4 eyes over the G3s. That said, I might move soon so I might need to find some of my ponies new homes. Some G3s may go, but I love my G4s too much.

I grew up with G1, but I love G3. I like the vibrant colors. I disagree with their colors being monotonous, but then again I have 95% of the generation except exclusives. The symbols though are overwhelmingly flowers.

I got back in to ponies right near the end of G3 just before Core 7 started so I missed a bunch of the early g3 ponies. An amazing friend sent me  several ponies on my wishlist and I was able to get one or two (3D symbol Rarity and TAF Starsong. Sometimes I wish I would have picked up G3s when they were so many in stores. I remember seeing the TRU birthday month ponies, Crystal Crown and her wishing well, Heart Bright and several others that I passed on because I wasn’t in to ponies then.

G3 came out when I was a sophomore (?) in college.  I really liked them but there were so many I couldn't fit them in my dorm room so I stopped collecting.  I'll pick the odd one up at the flea market, but aside from a few special ones I'll probably get rid of the bulk of my stuff.

I love G3. I grew up with G1, and as other have said G3 was a nice homage to G1.

When I started collecting as an adult, I started with G3 (after getting a small herd of petite ponies first). I actually debated buying G3s for several years before I ended up doing so. But I had to have Autumn Skye, so I caved in. Initially, I planned on a small herd of G3s, like 10 or so. Then, I decided well maybe I should get a few more for variety, but stop at around 25. But then I'd say to myself, "Well even though I've got my 25, I must get this pony, and that pony, and that pony....." You know how it goes. Now I have like 60 G3s.

The Things I Loved About G3:
-The body shapes that are reminiscent of G1.
-The seasonal and holiday ponies.
-The great variety of ponies.
-The beautiful jewels in the jewel pony and birthstone sets
-The nice array or playsets and cool accessories

A Couple Areas Where I Felt G3 Could Have Been Improved:
-Too many floral symbols
-Too many pink ponies (more orange and green would have been great)
- More unicorns and pegasi

Favorite G3s: Autumn Skye, Desert Blossom, Merriweather, Jolly Lolly, Denim Blue, Chilly Breezes, Lavender Cloud, Pumpkin Tart

I loved G3s! Was so much fun to go to the store and see ponies on the shelves again! Until the Core Seven started and pretty much ruined everything. Sadly, it doesn't seem that Hasbro learned from that major screw up.

My fav gen is G3! I'm a bit biased...my first pony ever was G3 Sunrise Song (again, one of the only unicorns!)

Looking back at the lack of G3 unicorns and pegasi to be honest, if you think of it this way they are supposed to be special and rare species  ;)
Maybe if we thought about this it makes sense why there aren't too many!

Other than that, I love their pearly bodies, the way they smell, all the beautiful poses, and the cool releases! (like the holiday ponies and the gradient leg ones).

Also, their playsets are SO durable and their accessories are so cute!

I usually go for white ponies, but Waterfire is just so gorgeous. Shiny hair, elemental yin yang type deal with the water and fire, her body is water and her hair is fire, and she even has a flame in her water-blue eyes. She is probably the most true to her name of all ponies.

I had Waterfire when I was a kid. She was one of my favourites, and I hope to own her again one day. G3 ponies were a big part of my childhood, and made up most of my collection. Those ponies were all given away when I was 11 or 12, and I only have a handful of G3s now that I've either found round the house or in charity shops.

I love waterfire too!  I used to make my G1 ponies surf boards n stuff when I was a kid so Waterfire with the surf shack playset and the bonus ponies with her gave me grabby hands right away!! LOVE!!!!! :dribble:    plus she is like G1 boy Barnacle's coloring and sea theme so win win - she became his daughter in my herd
G1 will always be my fave but I love G3 best after those. I have them as the older kids of my G1's. There are so many that resemble my fave G1's or my fave G1 pony couples (like as in a combi of their colors, or exactly their colors)  that I couldn't resist!!! they are displayed with their "family" :silly:  :lovey:  :inlove:

I started collecting G3 a few years into their release but I got a lot of them because the stores around here as well as local sellers , family, friends , ebay and charity shops had a lot of the earlier ones that I'd missed so I grabbed what I could, and bought some from the lovely peeps here too. Love the variety of color, style, theme, and the amazing playsets. Ok the ponies themselves would have been better with a symbol on both sides rather than just one,  they did need more Uni and pegs, and babies - and they definitely needed boys, but everything else about them = awesome :frolic:  :lovey:  :cheer:  :bigups: (I'm not counting the TV show that went with them BTW.. I think that was for the most part awful. Nowhere near as good as G1 or G4 , and when it came to the G3.5 show....  *shudder shudder*  :yikes: :yucky: )
big sister little sister sets? sooo cute!!!
Until it just became the core ponies over and over and over which got to be  ---->     I still got some of those sets but not all.
I have plenty of G3 in my herd - I have some variants too, and SDCC etc  but I would love to have them all one day.

The biggest G3  pony problem I have is Coconut Grove :dizzy:  :drunk: . All these years loose and she still smells so strong that I have to keep her in a ziplock bag unless I want the whole place to smell of her! :yikes:  I even bought her second hand and she still smells. Actually...ahem...  I hid her in my hubby's sock draw for a time :snicker:    :devious:

I love G3's.  I grew up with G1's so those will always be my favorite but G3's are my second favorite.  They're the reason why I got back into MLP collecting.  I remember to this day hearing the commercial for the Cotton Candy Cafe while I was on the computer.  I heard the song and almost had a whiplash turning around so quickly.  It was very reminiscent of G1 times with the tune.  I wanted some of those ponies I saw in the commercial but at the time I was around 18 or 19 in 2003 so I thought I was way too old for MLP.  I became a closet collector later when I bought G3 Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie who had the charms.  It pretty much grew from there.

G3's were very much like G1's in that they had many different poses and varieties.  I remember seeing them at Toys R Us and they had shelve and shelves of G3's, even covering both sides of an aisle.  I miss those days.  I was born in 1984 and I think I got my first G1's in 1988 or 1989 but I was still young and didn't watch the TV series or movie until later on when I was older.  So, I don't truly remember the G1 days when they were first out because I wasn't born yet.

well, being born in '79, I was already in my 20's when the G3 appeared but since I had G1 as a kid, I was happy to see the G3 come out. G1 will ALWAYS be my first choice but I like G3 and G4 too. It's the G2's I want no part of. I think I haev almost every G3 that was released minus re-releases or variants of the same pony - like the stupid core 7 crap. Although I do like the ones with the words written on them.

I don;t have enough room, so they are all in totes on the back porch.

G3 is a great generation in my opinion; I think people have already mentioned some of the downsides, like the silly names some of them have and the lack of variety (i.e., no boys, few babies, and mostly earth ponies). I think their color schemes and poses in general, though, are really creative, and like someone said, their accessories are really cute. Also, you can stick the ones with magnets onto vertical surfaces. Always entertaining.

I have a goal of collecting all of the G3 unicorns. I received a Whistle Wishes as a random present from my mom when that pony was new in stores and when I had basically stopped collecting any ponies; I thought and have always thought since that she's so beautiful, one of the few G3s I'd actually call objectively beautiful.

I absolutely adore G3, they're the generation I'd say I grew up with, so they are my favorite generation! I'm not really sure why I latched on to MLP like I did, I wasn't ever much of a doll or even fantasy kid, but for some reason when my sister got the cotton candy cafe for her birthday I was automatically in love, I knew I needed a pony of my own! I think I even remember my mom having a conversation with the mom who bought her the gift, I was at a roller skating rink and being nosy when I overheard my mom say something like, "I don't think we have any of those yet..." and she told me I had to wait to see what the new toy was on my sister's birthday because she must not have thought I'd keep the secret :P
G3 has by far the coolest color schemes in my opinion, I remember being so pumped about the jewel ponies, butterfly island, and the later releases that had crazy gradients and patterns on their legs. I've kept all my ponies from when I was younger and took over the herds of my sister and a couple old neighbors too, so I honestly feel like I have most of the US G3 ponies minus most re-releases and some of the more uncommon ones.

Always fun with fridges but less amusing when trying to pack in the same bag as your laptop. I was going to bring Sandy Island back to London with me to keep Honoluloo company, as she's the only G3 I have in London, but I couldn;t work out how to do it safely because of her magnet :(

I found Pretty Pop at a carboot sale. She was new to me when I did but i ended up keeping her, she's lovely. Welcome. :)

I love quite a few of the baby ponies. They're soo cute! Even though I don't have any yet, my favorites are:

Sandy Island
Honolulu
Lavender Locket
Penny Candy
Wave Catcher
Tea Lily
Bella Luna
Keen Bean
Boogie Woogie
Butterdrop

Would have been nice to have more pegasus foals too. I don't care for the wings on Mochanut.

Why oh why didn't they make baby unicorns? That would have been so adorable! What do you guys think baby unicorns would have been like?

What are some of your favorite and least favorite poses?

Favorite:
Wysteria
Sunny Daze
Kimono
Valenshy
Silver Glow
Whistle Wishes
Decorator Starcatcher

Sweet Breezes
Periwinkle
Fizzy Pop

Least Favorite;

All Breezie poses. Well it's actually just their face that bothers me.

Not a fan of open mouth poses like donkey and waterfire (as much as I love Waterfire herself) but other than that, it depends how well I think the pose fits the pony's personality in my mind. I loved all the baby poses as a kid.

I hate the diva pose.

Not really a fan of the two Khoufu mentions either. But can deal with them.

Waterfire is sooo pretty if it wasnt for her pose... she has such a weird look on her face... o.0

I agree with everyone on the creativity! G3 have such pretty and creative symbols, just think of Alphabittle! Sooo cute <3

I'm not crazy about it. It looks painful. I can put up with it though for Port-o-bella and Crystal Crown. And I'd love to have Pepperberry and Tink-a-tink-a-too II.

Who are some of your grails? Whether I can get them or not, some of mine are:
Star Flight
Heart Bright
Caribbean Delight
Rosey Posey
Frisco and Trolley
Peacock
Unicorn Cheerilee
Love Letter
Pumpkin Tart with her costume
Mistletoe with her accessories
Winter Snow
Marshmallow Cocoa
Crystal Crown
Thistle Whistle
Zippy Zinnia
Meadow Moon
Twinkle Hope

The only grails I have so far are Port-o-bella and Chilly Breezes.

We dont have them anymore since they got severely damaged over the years, but I'll always remember them!

These days I just have Minty, Toola Roola, and Pinkie Pie that were given to me by my sibling haha
Here's Minty and Pinkie Pie now!

They have a lot more g3s than I do but they aren't comfortable posting pictures of their collection

That's why I want a zillion Waterfire customs. She has awesome potential.

G3 had more complex symbols in general than its predecessors, which led to a variety of neat symbols. Too bad white ponies (and probably pink) were magnets for heart and flower related symbols. Those were the first to go when I purged, as cool as a bumpy 3D heart, layered 3D flimsy plastic heart, or cloth flower symbol were.

Edit: AnnabellDerwin - I have/had the same playsets! I renamed Pink Sunsparkle to Ember.

As far as geails, I just want to replace Candy Cane, I want Portobella, Breezie, and Wishawhirl, if I can find hem cheap, when I buy g3s again eventually. Funny enough  LAW, I have Mistletoe and Marshmellow Coco NIB that I'm  trying to sell, and it's Snow'el  (the other in the set) that everyone seems to want.

I think my top grails would be (in no particular order):
Spoiler
Rainbow swirl 2
Kimono 2
Cotton Candy 2
Finger paints
Candy Apple
November chrysanthemum (and the other 11, but nov is my birth month!)
November nights (and the other 9 I’m missing)
Sunny salsa
Beach belle
Caribbean delight
Sparklesnap
Winterberry
Snow el (Pegasus)
Pearly pie
Aurora mist
Sunrise song
Sweetberry 2
Wind wisher
Rainbow sunrise
Bashful bonnet
Baby Pink Sunsparkle with no magnet/heart and white cover (if she exists!)

I love the baby ponies too! Especially Pink Sunsparkle! I think my second favourite g3 is round n round, her colours are so bright! Those two are my army ponies  ;)

I think my main goal is to collect each pose for each pony, then I want to branch out into collecting variants, from very different (different body colour) to the tiny (eyelashes closer together etc). I’m not sure whether I’m going to go for the exclusives, I’m thinking not, as the ones I like the best have the worst price tag too!  >_<
Mlp Sunsparkle x

Edit: I said I was going to be EATING variants  :yummy: :lmao: don’t worry I’m not THAT mad! The variants are all safe ;)

Consider us twins in that regard haha I'm not really sure which g3s I want to get next since I'm mainly focusing on g1s (I think both me and my sibling are but they also get a lot of the g4 sets too) but I would like to get some more some time!

I am slowly figuring out which G3 I would like to have. I don't know about grails, but I'd like to have them.

Pegasus Snow'el is gorgeous but seems expensive, so I'm probably out with her.
Whatever Breezies I haven't got yet. Totally having trouble keeping track.
Thanks to LAW I have now added Lavender Cloud (growls)
There are also a couple of SLH I would like to add.
Chocolate Chipper is also cute :)

Aloha Pearl seems popular. I suddenly regret selling her before discovering the pony forums.

As a kid I got the Celebration Castle and it came with Pink Sunsparkle. I didn't care for her much, and I named her Ember after the first baby pony, since she was the first baby G3. The castle pieces didn't fit together properly so we exchanged it for a new one. TRU let us keep the pony out f the first one so my sister and I each have her.

My favorite G3 pose is the donkey pose! It makes the ponies look very excited and happy! I'd like to get every donkey pose pony out there! I have 8 so far (two of which are different versions of Minty, original and Winter 2005), so I still need 17 to have them all!

Least favorite pose is the Core 7 pose.

My collection goals for G3 are:

-all Winter ponies (maybe even all the other holiday ones too...)
-all Donkey pose ponies
-all Super Long Hair ponies
-all gradient ponies
-all ponies with cascading symbols
-all gem symbol ponies
-all 3D symbol ponies
-all pegasi
-all unicorns
-complete birthflower set(I have none yet RIP)

Of course there's also a lot of ponies on my G3 wishlist that don't fall under any of these categories.

I like G3!! it's my second favorite gen. But I dont like them nearly as much as G1s but they are hard to resist.

My favorites are the christmas ponies and the beach-themed ponies.

I think that G3s heads are too big for their bodies and I think that there are way too many pink and purple ponies, bu other than that I think theyre so fun!

I have Snow'el, Marshmallow Cocoa, Sea Scape, Island Delight, Kiwi Tart, Coconut Grove, and my fav: Hidden Treasure.

I hope to find more at flea markets and yard sards so I can clean them and brush them and give them out at the pony fair.

Giving out toys related to an event is fun to do. I'd totally do it if I had a bunch of cheap/unwanted ponies.

might as well give them to people who would love them rather than sit in a dusty flea market bin, right? lol

Also posted the original in one of the facebook groups (MLP Collector) in their files for a downloadable one..

I need to check out that checklist, as I am at the moment relying on my photo folder to tell me if I have a pony or not. I can only remember the names of about 50% without that to help me. Also I still feel like I have some missing. I found Lickity Split but not Portobella. I may have sold her, or lost her, or anything might have happened, but I feel like Lickity Split is missing her, so I'll have to find another one :( I know Lickity came with another set, but I never had the other set, only the one with Portobella. So yeah. Portobella goes on the wantlist...and doubtless I'll find and buy another one and find my original one...and end up with twins...sigh.

Also thanks to LAW posting those links, I have now purchased Lavender Cloud whose existence I completely didn't know about but whose colours are really amazing.

Having a checklist to help keep track would be really great.

Since I grew up with G3s (I was a 1997 baby; sadly missed the G2s by a hair since I was too young to have gotten them as gifts) they definitely hold a special place in my heart. G1s will always be my fave generation but G3s are a close second! My first pony was Strawberry Swirl, whom I received as a gift when I was five or six, and I kept her in pretty good condition even though I played with her and I took her everywhere. She even went with me when we visited Build-A-Pony at Disney World! I still have her, actually. My sis and I would watch the G3 movies (I know, yikes) in the living room and play with our ponies together, and put them in our bike baskets to take them with us to our local Friendly's. Ah, so many great memories with G3s.

I have a good amount of G3s already, some from my childhood. The rarest pony I currently have is actually a G3, a mint condition Rosey Posey with her mane and tail still in their original packaging.  I was lucky enough to find her at a thrift store (I actually found two Rosey Poseys at the same store, although sadly the second one has quite the frizz problem; the other one went to my sister, who is also a collector and didn't mind the frizz). As for collection goals, I would very much like to get back all the G3s I had during childhood before I lost the majority of my pony collection in moving/emergency sales.

EDIT: Got a pic of both of the Rosey Poseys! One on right is mine.

You are welcome. :) I have a section near the end of the checklist discussing ponies with no hoof heart variants, I am always up for any pictures you would like to submit :) When I first made this years ago, I was actually going over things via email with the gal who ran the rerelease encyclopedia and I copied all the variant information down, so I still have her entire variant descriptions in the original file.
