Title: Can BBE eyes be baked?
Post by: Taxel on October 13, 2016, 09:30:51 PM
I have a pair of BBEs I got from someone ages ago and would love to use them to make a sculpture. I mostly use polymer clay that bakes at 275 F for an hour. Has anyone tested BBE eyes in situations like that? I wouldn't mind testing myself but I only have one pair and they're absolutely perfect.

I guess, but I don't think they'd taste very good. ;)

In all honesty, I don't think sticking them or there eyes in the oven is a good idea. But I could be wrong.

Don't g1 ponies melt in the oven?  Im pretty sure only G3 ponies can withstand the heat of an oven.

No, only there neck glue can. I remember someone trying to loosen the neck glue of a G3 pony by gently heating them in the oven. The pony partly melted, but the neck remained intact. There were even pictures.

Nah Iv baked a few G1 ponies. :) assuming this is a fimo/sculpey related baking, which bakes at a relatively low temp. Otherwise I cant say for sure.

As for as bbe eyes, I have no idea, never tried it.

G1's that are easy to squish can get a little collapsey in the oven if left too long, but plenty are fine if carefully watched. I have no idea about the BBE either, but let us know if you try it out.

my guess would be depending on what they are made of. I'm not familiar with what BBEs are actually made of, but if its glass and or metal, i would say go for it! Perhaps keep the oven on low for good measure, and see how it goes before turning up the heat.

Yeah its polymer clay. 275 F, so pretty low, but for an hour, which is kind of long. No ponies would be involved at all. Just eyes! But I don't know if they can handle baking or if the plastic backs react with polymer clay. I don't have any poor condition BBE eyes so I can't do any experimenting. If no one has tried it I just won't do it :)

i wouldnt risk it then. https://thebluebottletree.com/polymer-clay-melt-plastic/

I know, I've read that article. I've been using polymer clay for many years :) That's part of why I'd never risk my good eyes. But it would be good information for the community to have if anyone has unsalvagable eyes to test on.

Ponies can be baked in the oven for a certain amount of time without melting..
HOWEVER, BBE have both metal and hard plastic casings.. I would not recommend baking a pony with BBEs

Pretty sure you can boil cure polymer clays...

eta.- here ya go!

I would say this would be a great alternative to baking eyeballs ;P

No ponies would be involved, just eyes and clay :3 Its definitely still risky though. I might try and track down some unsalvageable rusted eyes to do some testing. Its possible it could work, but its also very possible the plastic backs could melt or react poorly to the clay.

Also, unfortunately that boiling info is wrong. Polymer clay can't get a full cure from boiling so boiled clay is weak and brittle.

Taxel, I'm curious of what you plan on doing XD
Have you looked into other types of clay other than sculpty?

Are you able to place the eyes in the clay and then remove them to bake? That way you can just glue them back into the clay sockets.

Just gonna toss this idea in here and see if it helps at all:

When in art school, my professors had us scuplt characters with sculpty for our character design class. Mind that these were liek 8-12 inches tall figures attached to wooden bases. But the professors told us to disregard the instructions on the sculpty packaging in favor of a lower temp and longer cooking time to prevent cracking, burning, damaging, etc... it might work for you. Basically they said this:

Put your sculpture in the oven while it is off.
Then turn the oven on to the lowest temperature it can go to. Let the over do its "preheat" with the sculpture inside.
Let it cook for a couple hours, resisting the urge to open the door to peak (the idea being a rush of air changing the temperature will crack the cooking sculpty)
When you feel it is done, turn off the oven.
Leave sculpture in oven until oven is completely cool.
Then done.

I used this method to add 3-d bits to a plastic picture frame I was working on and seemed to work well. Excepted that I did peak and caused a few cracks in the sculpty itself.

Hopefully that could be helpful to you :)

Oh no, now there's expectations! xD Probably a very poor sculpture that I'd end up hating, haha. I make a lot of creature dolls and BBE eyes could be fun to incorporate in some fashion. I'd mostly just be winging it, maybe some BBE cyclops... es?

Air dry clay could maybe work but I'm not a big fan of it. I'm not good at painting so it probably wouldn't turn out very well. Colorful polymer clay is my material of choice whenever I need to make anything.

Well it's important to remember what BBEs are made of.. Metal, Plastic, Paper (the iris), and Fake hair (Eyelashes). I'd be more worried about the plastic melting XD

I always bake G1's if fact I have baked every generation except 2 and have not done the BBE yet either. so far all held up fine :)

I can tell you what happens to BBE's when you bake them... The blue and black plastic melts! LOL.
My latest victims have been BBE's.
I baked this one upside down. So the plastic melted kinda flat and upward toward the lashes.

Dang, I guess that answers that! I like how your victim turned out though. So sparkly :D
