Two pony sculptures in progress
« on: August 06, 2012, 04:20:06 PM »
So is the first custom pony project I've ever done. I made two pony sculptures out of polymer clay. They're still a work in progress, but I wanted to show what I've done so far. I still have some sanding to do on them and (obviously) I still need to paint them.

I haven't decided for sure who she'll be, but I'm leaning towards G3 Minty. It's supposed to be a filly, so like the same age as the CMCs.

And this little lady will be :muffin: Pony.

I know I still need more practice and everything, but these came out so much better than I thought they would. I think I'm going to make a bunch more. Though, I may make the next ones smaller. These ones are almost the same size as the G4 brushables.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty proud of them, especially since I haven't worked with clay in about 10 years. I got them all sanded down and will be painting them today after I get back from registering my son for school. Hopefully the painting will go ok. I'm not the most comfortable working with paint. Luckily, my mom does tons of craft projects and has tons of paint in every color imaginable as well as just about every type and size of brush available so at least I don't have to worry about supplies.

Ok, quick question. I was painting :muffin: Pony when I accidentally got some of the grey paint on her hair. When I go to paint her hair (after the body paint dries) should I first do a coat of white as sort of a primer, or just paint directly over the grey with the yellow? I obviously don't want the grey to show under the pale yellow, but I'm not really sure the best way to go about this. Like I said, I'm not very good at painting so I have no clue on stuff like this.

I'm in the process of painting the first two, but while they were drying, I decided to make two more. These are slightly smaller, but I think these are better, quality-wise.

First up is Lyra:

I've loved her design since I first saw her, so I had to make her. I'm really happy with how her pose turned out.

And here's Trixie:

So, Trixie is tied with Fluttershy in being my favorite character in FiM. Though, I'm hoping she'll come back on the show slightly nicer and a little less arrogant. I don't want her to be perfect since that would be no fun, but I think she should tone it down a bit so she's not run out of town again.

Trixie is actually a little smaller than Lyra, but not by much. I'm still experimenting at this point with the size of the figures to work out which size is best. Since I have carpal tunnel, I have some trouble working with the clay. But I've found the smaller ones take less time smoothing out and working into the proper shape, which is less time for my hands to start hurting and going numb. Once I'm done painting all four, I'll be sure to update with more pics.
