Pony Corral / Re: Weird experiences with other generations as a kid
« on: February 11, 2024, 03:31:38 PM »
My very first ponies were G2 but due to their short run in the US I didn't have many of them, nor did I know they were "My Little Pony". I had lots of other fakies too, I loved little toy horses in general. I had the Friendship Gardens game and it took a while to put two and two together to realise that the toy ponies I owned were the same as the ones in the game! (Ivy and Sundance.) I still didn't really know that "My Little Pony" was a thing. I figured it was some small thing, idk. Years later I got G3s, which were unmistakably "My Little Pony", and I figured "oh I guess these are new ones?" So I knew there were "old" and "new" My Little Ponys. 2006 I would receive The End of Flutter Valley on DVD as a Valentines Day present (timely story) and "oh, ponies that are even OLDER?". I had a shirt with Gusty on it too at some point, I don't remember whether it was before or after watching TEoFV. I didn't know Tales existed until 2007 when I stumbled upon it somehow on YouTube.

Despite "growing out" of the toys around that time, I still kept up with MLP and held *some* interest in it. I saw them phase into the Core 7 and thought it was odd, "these are all old ponies, but who's Sweetie Belle???". I was in middle school when Twinkle Wish Adventure came out and I saw it premiere on Disney Junior. I figured that MLP was getting an update again and I liked the "chibi style" of it (I was well into my anime phase at that point so maybe I was biased LOL).

I wanna know the story behind Trojan Sunny. Like they made a regular Brighthouse playset, but it was too boring? So they decided to dissect Sunny and that's what made kids go "woohoo yeah yippee Mom please buy this"??? Do you think when this is on shelves in-store, kids are gonna be wowed? Is the thought of having a giant clunky Sunny really that exciting to have? A giant Sunny where if you break her neck and cut her head open, there's a bedroom for Pipp there?

Lots of moving parts in this one, how much you wanna bet parents are gonna complain about how easily it breaks despite the ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR price point?

On one hand, I really like it. I love the concept of a regular, normal house for ponies to live in. This delivers on that. On the other, it's disturbing and weird. Like, funny, but WHY. Why would you design this? Whose idea?? A regular Crystal Brighthouse would've been gorgeous, whose idea was it to make a Trojan Sunny instead???????

Oh and um. Another unnecessary slide tacked onto the playset. G4 and G5 love their unnecessary slides and oversized staircases, don't they...

Can it get worse than this? Cast your votes now.

The ones they released last year were in the right direction. This one? Nothing about the design makes sense. The abnormally round head, the abnormally long ears, the HORN

Pony Corral / Unreleased G3 Ponies Found in Sticker Book

I've finally had enough time off from work to scan and edit these stickers from a sticker set. :)

sharing from my own blog, of course, in regards to the watermark

In 2006 Reader's Digest Children's Books released the Fun Days in Ponyville: Storybook and Playset. It looks like the storybook was also sold as a standalone release. The book itself isn't interesting, its more of the same "look at the little ponies play!" with the typical Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, you know the cast. The case folds out into a couple different scenes for the stickers. Most stickers were of reoccurring characters... except for these two! They don't have names or anything attached to them.

My theories:

Pumpkin: If intended to be a 2006 holiday release, she could be a third Halloween pony to complete the typical holiday trio, or an earlier design for Pumpkin Tart. If she was supposed to be released in 2005, maybe an early design for Autumn Crisp, who's also purple, pumpkin-themed, and is rendered with noisy hair (tinsel)?

Banana Split: I personally don't think she fits in with the rest of 2006's line-up, so I think she's a 2005 pony, which opens up her options for releases. There was the Super Sundaes Ice Cream Parlor that could've used a unique pony character, the Dazzle Bright line (comparable to Coconut Cream, white pony/sweets theme/colourful hair), the Sunny Scents line (she could've easily been vanilla scented), or you could've simply put her into the "Perfectly Pony" line. She's also comparable to Caribbean Delight (white pony with colourful hair) and Alphabittle (rainbow hair, blue bowl of food accompanied by swirl designs) which also released in 2005.

Pony Corral / Re: Hasbro's Most Baffling MLP Decisions

MLP's 40th Anniversary. :lookround:

Basic Fun did a good job as a third party, but Hasbro was just embarrassing. In general, a complete lack of content. "Let's release a digital album... and only put one song on it!" (if you want to be fair, it's multiple remixes of the same one song). Let's do a clothing collab... and make everything black and white (or at least, have minimal colour)? The Loungefly stuff this year was cute but it wasn't necessarily "40th Anniversary". It was just more MLP like they've been doing. Same with the Erst Wilder, La Vidriola, and Oodie collabs... they're just kind of generic products and nothing celebratory. Compare to Care Bears who introduced a character that celebrated the brand, Care-a-Lot Bear. Make Your Mark had the Bridlewood special. Ruby Jubilee happened but she's never going to appear in the series again and she will absolutely not get a toy. We hardly got ANY toys this year from Hasbro. Their big showing at the Toy Fair was the Marestream playset, which had been out for MONTHS, if not a year. LPS had a bigger presence. Care Bears is always getting something new, left and right. We're getting more plushes from Basic Fun, at least? Stores like Walmart are slowly getting rid of the MLP section.

Terrible and embarrassing year.

Unpopular opinion, I think Applejack's eyebrows are cute. But I wish they gave her freckles. She has a sweet expression. G4's mid-generation reboot wasn't good. The faces are relatively more accurate, but I wish they had more sculpting. But the bodies are confusing. The first G4s had a more accurate bodytype... why did they make them so skinny, their necks so long, and their legs so short??? I could go on and on about Hasbro's handling of G4 but I'll end it on: why did they NEVER give Twilight Sparkle, the MAIN character, the CORRECT COLOUR FOR HER HAIR? It took them until G5 over 10 years later to give her blue hair!!

My Nova came yesterday and Milky Way came Monday or Tuesday or so. :) Looking forward to Aurora and Polaris! Nova is a little boring to me. I think they could've used tinsel on these ponies.

I knew the names to my ponies, but I don't think my Romperooni had a name (the one that came with Rainbow Flash... she's just "baby pony"), so I named her Tiger Lily. :) We had tiger lilies in our yard and I loved them, so I thought it was a good fit LOL

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Re: Hasbro brings back furby

I can't see the pic, so I don't know what they look like, but the last time they were brought back I thought they were cute.

They come in two colours: purple and coral. :)

I think they're really cute! Better than the screen-eye Furbys or the "Connect" Furbys. The screen-eyes were a neat gimmick but Furby looks better with "real" eyes. I wish the beak was "real" too. It's just stuck open all the time, forever. It makes it feel more like a robot than a real little bird-thing.

I think it's interesting how they're designed. I guess a lot of it is what's trendy right now, but when I see the necklace and the sparkly eyes I think of the Furby customizing community. 😂

New G1-inspired products by Loungefly coming soon, based on some sets I wouldn't have expected: A Pretty Parlor pin and wallet, a bag based on the Show Stable, and a bag based on the little carry-case stable. What's even more surprising to me, well, drumroll please...

REAL G1 ART!!!! Of course, it's cleaned up, but it's so nice to see the cute, kind, gentle, droopy, tiny-eyed ponies!! This is the only item where the exterior has this art, but the interiors of the other bag and wallet have the heads/busts of ponies in this same style.

They're listed on Loungefly's site of course, but they're available for pre-order on Entertainment Earth's site.

Pony Corral / How do you store Backcards?
« on: April 09, 2023, 07:24:24 PM »
Trying to straighten out my shelves a bit and I have all my backcards just kind of loose tucked away somewhere. I thought about putting them in maybe a nice binder with sheet protectors, but the cards vary in size (I only have 1 G1 card, and it's so much bigger than G3s), so that might not be so practical. So maybe just a portfolio of sorts? Like just a plain folder? Then what if it gets too full, then it all just spills out again...

I still think heavy duty sheet protectors would be the best bet...? I've been keeping G3 cards as in-tact as possible, but they're more than just cards, it's half a box that's all folded, and that's gonna be awkward to store unless I cut them all up.
