Introductions / It's been a fair few months
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:39:20 AM »
But I have returned!
Just thought I'd say hi again. I mostly lurk but maybe it's about time I started posting more. I kind of became distracted from pony collecting when I started this year of college. But I saw some of the new G4's in a toy shop the other day and I think I fell back in love with the idea of collecting them.

So, hi again!

Mine is probably realising that I missed out on a lot of the non-mane six G4 brushables outside of the princesses. I only managed to snag Daisy Dreams, Sugarcup, Sunset Shimmer, Sweetie Swirl, Lyra, Trixie, a very damaged second hand Cheerilee and Sunny Rays I believe. I missed out on wave four in 2011 entirely and all the convention exclusives and Toys R Us exclusives (there aren't any Toys R Us stores in the Republic of Ireland that I know of).
Ponies that are exclusive to certain stores and countries therefore are always a pretty big disappointment for me. Especially when they're unicorns.

Pony Corral / Re: Prototype or new version of Queen Chrysalis?

Gonna assume these are bootlegs. The quality of the airbrushed paint and rough neck plugs is the exact same as a Chinese G3.5 Starsong fakie I got in Euro General. That line of fakies seemed to try to exactly replicate already licensed MLP characters but the airbrushed paint and plastic were much more matte than a real MLP. That Chrysalis and Nightmare Moon both look like their plastic is much more matte than a real Hasbro figure.

That is one dirty pony. I'm just happy to see she wound up with someone willing to take as much time as necessary to clean up all nice!

I love finding old ponies still in stock in normal retail shops. I remember about two years ago there was a newsagents called Tuthills and a TK Maxx in the same shopping centre near me with a ton of G3's. Tuthills only seemed to have Rainbow Dash though. TK Maxx had a lot of different ponies, Sparkleworks, Meadowbrook, Sunny Daze, and a lot more. In the city there's a Smyths toy shop that sometimes has G3.5 baby sets with the mother and car.

Pony Corral / Re: Why exactly are pony tails fizzy?
« on: February 11, 2014, 08:20:52 AM »
I think frizz is the bending of the plastic in the hair.  At least, this is what I noticed for G1s and G3s (don't have a lot of G4s de-boxed).

I'd say it's a mix of this, and Hasbro buying cheaper hair. The hair is probably cheaper due to not having as much oil used in its production. There is a small amount of oil usually applied to nylon hair that helps protect it from damage and keep it soft especially while it's going through machinery while it's being manufactured. And with less of that oil even the hair being cut to length when the pony is being made will cause it to be damaged around the area the blade went through, bending the fibres out of shape and stretching it.

Because of this, I can see why olive oil would help tame it as it just adds what was originally missing from the hair. It would also make it shinier and softer.

Pony Corral / Re: which generation curls / styles best
« on: February 08, 2014, 03:31:38 PM »
Probably G3's for me. I don't have enough G1's to really know and playful pony sized G4's are difficult to style due to how short they are compared to how long their hair is. Even if it styles fine, it tends to rest awkwardly on whatever surface they're left on which can make the curl go kinda funky after being on display for a while. G2's seem to be pretty good for loose curls like neck curls.

I'll pretty much buy any Twilight figure that comes out but I might be tempted to buy the entire set of "snow-globe" ponies. They sound super cute and I'm a sucker for anything translucent and/or Winter-themed.  :cold:

As far as charity shops go, I tend to give a few extra Euro with each purchase anyway. I've only ever found one piece of pony merchandise myself in a charity shop which was one of the storybooks that was being sold for a Euro I think, so I gave them a few more Euro anyway. If it were just someone selling something at a garage sale or something I wouldn't have any problem getting a good deal on a pony. Though if it were in particularly nice condition and/or the seller was nice I'd probably give them a bit more.

Pony Corral / Any Information on this Fakie?
« on: December 09, 2013, 07:31:59 AM »
I managed to acquire what I think is some sort of G1 circus baby fakie. But she's pretty huge! visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Here's a size comparison between her and Floater. She's got glass eyes and eyelashes and her body is about the size of a G1 adult's, but a little bulkier, but her neck is a lot longer.

She feels pretty well made. Anyone else ever come across this colossal baby? Is she based off a baby pony? I don't have any non-fakie baby ponies so I don't have much to compare her to. She's my favourite fakie in my herd right now, mostly because I've never seen one quite like her before.

I have a single shelf in the top of a wardrobe behind my bed. I can always manage to fit everyone on, though, including eight Monster High dolls. :satisfied: My collection is still quite a bit smaller than most people here.

I'm INCREDIBLY jealous of your collection! Your room is adorable in general. Hello Kitty, Adventure Time and Pokémon too, it's like a dream come true.

Sunny Daze was my first G3 and I managed to get her around 2011 in a newsagents that still had some G3s. Then a few days later I was given some second hand ponies by someone and I got the same pose Sunny Daze all over again! She's the only G3 I have two of in the same pose.

And if you do use acetone, or even just plain nail polish remover for getting rid of the eyes and such, be safe and crack open a window. Ventilation is your friend when working with paint strippers and chemicals.  ;)

Pony Corral / Re: Trimming hair?
« on: July 10, 2013, 08:00:58 AM »
I always feel a mighty need to trim those longer hairs. Although if it's the tail I sometimes tug around at it a little if it seems lopsided in length, sometimes the tail just sits awkwardly inside the pony making a few hairs seem really long. If I can't straighten it out, then it's time for Mr. Scissors.
