whats the best way to clean G1 Plushies?
« on: May 12, 2014, 11:26:00 PM »
Hi! I got lucky today and found a g1 plush starshine at my local thrift store :)

she's in pretty nice shape but  since she is plush and IDK what adventures she has had,  i'd really like to give her a nice bath etc.

can i just soak her in oxy clean and detergent or what?   Shes my first plushie, so i want to make sure  i treat her right.

 any help is appreciated :)

I usually depending on the plushie run them through the washer/dryer on delicate/low in a teddy bear bag or pillowcase. Teddy bear bag is a glorified pillowcase that has a zipper :p I have no idea where my mom got one but I have one. Then to fluff them up I use a wire brush. You can pick up a cheap wire 'slicker' pet brush and it should do the job. Be sure to read the manufacture tags about cleaning if it still has a tag.

Our allergy pillow cases have zippers...I got them at target.

There was another plushie thread recently....someone mentioned un-stuffing them then running through the washer. I will look for the thread...

I just found a Bowtie at the thrift store, and I just did a surface cleaning with detergent in water, gently scrubbed it in with a soft brush, sponged it off, and then towel-dried the whole thing.

I like to only surface wash [good scrub with nail brush] them but I know that there is no problem with the pillow case and washer process if she is particularly dirty.

Also make sure to dry her and her hair in a standing up right [natural display] pose because sometimes they can become a little warped out of position if they drip/air dry in a weird position.

wow thanks every one some good tips here :)

I will try the light wash first  and if she needs  more cleaning after she dries then i will wash her in a pillow case. I am assuming I should just  wash her in a white pilow case?  i   think i have read about some people washing things in  colored ones and possible bleeding!

can the hair be treated  like the regular mlps? soap and  some conditioner?

I haven't washed a G1 plush recently, but last time I washed some G3s I used a mesh laundry wash bag and threw in a 'Color Catcher' sheet just in case.  Later I also hung the mesh bag up with the pony in it for a few days to make certain the plush was dry.

I have cleaned all of my plushes by tossing them in a pillow case (a white one) and then standing them up to dry for a few weeks before storing them.  This has worked wonderfully and really brightens them up.  I have not used shampoo or conditioner on them but I imagine it would work as well as it does on regular ponies.  I just comb through the hair after the washing machine bath and it dries soft and fluffy.  Good luck!

Yes, you can do the hair same as a regular pony, and yes, let her dry standing up. Even with just a surface cleaning, this Bowtie's legs started to warp, so I would imagine something that soaks them all the way through could be worse. I've put these plushies in the washer before, but I'm personally hesitant to do it if the legs are still stiff.
