Cleaning a Sweetberry pony?
« on: March 08, 2012, 02:20:24 PM »
Yes PandoraFox is back asking more cleaning questions!
I have a lovely Strawberry Surprise, who is, unfortunately, pretty grimy like the rest of my childhood herd.
However, she does still smell like strawberries quite a bit, and I'd love to keep her that way, but I haven't a clue how Hasbro gave those ponies their scent, or which cleaning methods may remove it.

Can anybody clue me in on how these ponies are scented?
And can anyone tell me which cleaning methods may preserve her scent?
After it's lived though nearly a decade up in the attic, it'd be a shame to accidentally take it off now.

I always just give my scented ponies a very gentle wash; no soap, no magic eraser, just a gentle wash with cold water. I'd rather have my scented ponies with marks or dirt on them than no scent, but that's just me! XD

Well if it comes to that I'd rather have her grimy too. I really want to keep that scent.
But the poor gal is looking pretty grey, so it would be nice if I could clean her up at least a tad.

yeah, I always prefer scent over looks. I used magic eraser on a bait coco berry, just to try it... and it completely eliminated the scent. :'(

My SS had a rusty tail, so I cleaned her out with the typical toothpaste method and she still smells nice and fruity. The scent is actually mixed in with the plastic, so while they do occasionally fade over time, I don't think they can ever truly loose their scent.

I would go with a simple water and soap/dishwash liquid bath. I'm pretty sure they hold their scent rather well.

I agree with what's already been said.  A gentle wash with cool water; no magic eraser and be very careful with scrubbing.  I didn't immerse the pony in water, either.

I had to clean 3 Sweetberry ponies from the thrift store and they all retained their scent .  It's not as strong as it would have been in the 80's but I love being able to hold them and smell them.  :)

Interesting... I have a Coco Berry from when i was a kid. I got my collection back recently and she still smelled nice (though faded). She was also filthy so I used a magic eraser on her and she still smells pretty :)

Thank you all for your advice.
A gentle wash for her it is. Hopefully that will leave her smell intact.

The thing that mostly worries me is that the grime on her is oddly oily or greasy looking, something I haven't seen on my other girls at all, and I don't know if, whatever this oily something is, has anything to do with her scent.
I've wondered if it could be plasticizer, but it's not sticky at all, nor does she feel any harder or more brittle then any of my other girls. She's actually in surprisingly fine condition otherwise.
