Pony Corral / Re: characters that should have toys but don't
« Last post by MJNSEIFER on May 18, 2024, 09:56:38 AM »
blue thunders (or whatever that one pegasus band was called I dont remember)
"Electric Blue" is the name of the pegasus band - "Blue Thunders" is what Lauren thought The Wonderbolts were going to be called.

And yeah, while I hardly ever keep up with G4 onwards toylines (so I may end up thinking that a character never had a toy when they they did) I do feel that G4 and G5 have several choices of who to make toys out of, rather than just focusing on the mane characters.

I think the Student Six were underused in the G4 toyline, despite being kind of a big-ish deal in the show (like they almost felt like they could have been the main characters in a spin off that didn't exist, or something...)

I'm surprised that neither Ruby Jubilee or The Dreamlands had any G5 toys made for them, given that they were created for the 40th Anniversary (I'm assuming for The Dreamlands, but they have to be!), but even on their own they work as toys (especially Kitcatepic's suggestion of Ruby being a singing toy or something.)

Agree on G1 ponies like Knightshade and the Tales boys making sense as toys - the fact that they're ponies even makes it sound like Hasbro had no excuse...

And yeah, I see the appeal of wanting villain toys as well - G1 Tirek in my opinion really seems like a character who should have a toy of him somewhere, but apparently he doesn't...

Also, this doesn't really fit here, as it's not a character, but I feel that a toy based on G4.5 Twilight's star projector in Pony Life would have been beautiful.  :lovey:

Very good points, especially that point about G1 having more mystery due to not being as organized, because it was the first - never thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense.

I admit that (regardless of whether it's actual mystery or just something I didn't know) I kind of fell into the same trap that I showed awareness of - thinking of the show over the toyline.

slept late :( at least it's the weekend. my sleep has been wonky too. i woke up at 2:30am and took about an hour to fall back asleep.

today i need to get everything ready for us to drive to Houston for my MIL's funeral. I also need to go over to my parent's. i haven't felt up to seeing anyone really but i should go over there and visit.

other than that i need to clean the house some and finish trimming the plants in the front yard. i usually water every other day if it doesn't rain so i think if i water before we leave and when we get home they'll be ok.

i get a lot of anxiety when i travel. it's why i don't really go on vacation. it's hard for me to leave the dogs. we're taking one with us and 2 of them will stay with my parents.

Bakana is bathed, I'm showered, & the last of my laundry is in. Some had to wait because of Thursday night & Friday morning. MISSED Thursday night due to wonky sleep, but made Friday morning & got that day's laundry in.
Knitting & crochet-wise I finished the hat to go wi the gloves which were irritating to make, so now on the scarf, which means I have 3 scarves on the go now.
Forgot to mention being a bit early for coffee on Tuesday so I also took glass out that day.
Every package I've ordered has arrived.

It wasn't uncommon in those days for collectors to pull it out of their G3s. I remember several collectors detinseling because it was just nearly impossible to tame.
this I hated how much tinsel was in the g3 line and plucked several g3s in my collecting but didn't end up keeping them forever as my g1s grew

Regardless of all of those production experiments, I understand what Carrehz meant simply because G4 was a streamlined effort in both media and toy production. There's a difference between discovering a detail you never noticed before in an animated episode of a series, and trying to make sense of how seventeen different countries did completely their own things for reasons we're still trying to figure out.

G4 is an entity, for better or worse, and while some ponies were/were not sold in different places, there's no real deviation. Analysing animation is something you can do eternally, true enough - there is no end point for that kind of discussion - but it is still subjective and based on opinion. It's not the same as hey, hang on, why did x pony come with x accessory here and not here?

I understand these are different driving motives, but given that G1 ended in 1995 and we're still having these discussions, compared to how compact G4 is and how recently it ended.

MLPMerch demonstrates this perfectly. It has all the G4 stuff organised beautifully...but still has absolutely no idea how G1 works.

There is not a single G1 ID site on the internet (and I include mine) which has a complete picture of how G1 My Little Pony worked. THIRTY YEARS after it ended.

G1 will always have bigger questions to answer, simply because it was not a collectable at the time it began. It was also not very well coordinated, organised or planned, because it was the first.

Nothing I've said here is disrespect to G4. But by the time you get to G4, the process is polished and the intentions are clearcut. And so many of us were here to watch the whole process from start to finish, with the back history of seeing G2 or G3 in the middle...so there were always people watching as collectors and fans even before G4 blew up.

They're just on different scales of understanding.

Not to mention - speaking as someone who has been actively involved in G1 pony information stuff since the late 1990s - a lot of information for G1 has been collectively lost. It hasn't been lost by those of us who dug it up or those of us who bothered to retain it from back then, but the number of people who don't know stuff about G1 these days which ten years ago would have just been basic information...demonstrates that we're always going to have that conversation about who/what/where/why...probably for as long as G1 is collectable.
