This Saturday, May 4th (my birthday!) is free comic book day in North America and some other parts of the world. You can go to certain stores and get a free comic book. Here's a website where you can type in you zip code (on the left) to find local stores participating. http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/992

Ooo! Thanks for the link! I bet hubby already knows about this, but just in case. ;) Happy B-Day to you!
-
Happy upcoming birthday!
Ooooh... a free comic? Any comic?

Not usually. Stores tend to have a table or a little section set aside for the comics they're giving away.
-
There was a list on the Free Comic Book Day website of the comics that will be given away this year. Some of them looked pretty interesting!

I absolutely love Free Comic Book Day! :) It's usually a pretty big day for the Star Wars costuming club I'm in, but this year is super special because of May the 4th.

I'd love to try this at my local comic book shop but the people who work there and hang around the shop are nasty dudebros who leer at me for having the audacity to be female.
-
of course there are no comic book stores where I live.
-
awww there's no comic stores near me at all D:
-
My local comic book store has recently started to cater to the FiM crowd and carries the trading cards along with the comic books...double score :-)

Really? That's a shame! If there are any other comic book stores nearby, you should give them a try! The ones in my area all seem to be quite pleasant; I'm sorry that the one closest to you is less than hospitable. :(

There is only one in my whole town, (granted, it's a small town) and they sort of have this monopoly in my town, but to my luck they can't beat amazon and ebay prices. XD I do appreciate that I live in an area where small business really thrives, but I also hate that some of the places in town are just, awful and allowed to remain awful from a lack of competition.

If any of you guys live near Colorado Springs, I won a contest to rename the comic shop downtown a few years ago! I don't live there anymore though; miss that shop. Drop by Escape Velocity if you're in the neighborhood, if you can figure out the tangle of one-way streets! And my girlfriend used to work at a comic shop in Philly, Fat Jack's I think. I only went a few times but it was really nice.
We haven't been reading many comics lately, though - burned DC fans. I've heard the Friendship is Magic comics are pretty good, maybe I'll check them out this Saturday!
-
How awesome! Thanks for sharing!
-
Do you have to sign up for anything when you are there or just walk in grab and leave?
-
Oh, I'm so jealous! I wish there was something like this in Sweden. Good luck to everyone who's going, I hope you get some amazing stuff!

Every store does things a little bit differently, but I never had to sign anything.

My workplace is taking part in this; there is a table set up with the free comics (they all say free comic book day on them) and you just grab however many you want, and bring them up to the register. they still get scanned for inventory purposes, but are totally free :)
-
Neat thanks. I'm glad I can pick up more then one at the same store. Thought I might have to make some circles to hit some stores.
-
It figures, in a town w/ multiple comic shops the closest participating location is in Ontario. (Yeah, it's just across the river but going over the bridges would make that comic cost around $10)
And for anyone on the fence about looking into the FiM comics, they are awesome! The first few issues can be had online for just a coupla bucks, too, give it a go!
-
I would really love to get hold of the Mouse Guard free comic, if anyone comes across it tomorrow please would you pick it up for me?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Pretty please? :fox:
-
I'll be there! Woo!

I will, we're planning on going to multiple comic book shops so I will grab one if I see it.

That is so kind! Thank you, I just love this comic, and I squeed with joy when I saw they were doing a free comic again this year!
Have fun tomorrow!
-
I'm hitting up the local comic shop tomorrow. We helped prep stuff last weekend when my husband and I were there for a game day.
-
I'm definitely going tomorrow morning. One of my comic book stores is offering a bunch of free stuff when they open at 8am (including a special Iron Man figurine for the first 100 customers, and some local businesses are giving away gift cards as well), and people were already lining up outside it at 5pm earlier today. I didn't even know people lined up for FCBD. :D
-
I just came back from my comic book shop. I got the Star Wars comic the website was advertising (which also has an Avatar comic on the opposite side). I also bought a newest MLP comic and a He-Man one as well. I'm sure I'll get more comics over time now that I know where a shop is locally!
-
I was so excited to see that Avatar shared a book with Star Wars. These are two of my favorite things! :)
My husband and I visited two comic book stores in costume today. Everybody was having such a fun time! It was awesome!
-
Went to my shop earlier, picked up a few! Gonna maybe go to another one later if I have time. I ordered quite a few online too, along with a handful of back issue MLP comics I'd been missing. :nerdy:
If you can't get out to a physical store, try looking for one online. This place is already sold out, but here's the list of the all comics that are being offered, for those curious: http://www.midtowncomics.com/store/fcbd.asp
My place was giving away a random pack of 5 of them to everyone, plus 1 extra free one of your choice. I'm sure every place is doing it differently, but they will be free!
I reaaalllly wanted one of the "Action Time Buddies," but have struck out so far. Don't know what it is, but it has ponies and stars Bro the Kung-Fu Pegasus, so I have high hopes XD

For Bergamot (and anyone else) wondering what the Star Wars/Avatar comic looks like.
They're terrible ipod pictures but they work.
front and back cover:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
last page of Star Wars comic and two pages after the last page of Avatar comic:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
There's a little Captain Midnight comic in between the two comics as well (its 8 pages).
-
My local store had you sign up. Each person could get up to 5 titles, so my boyfriend and I have 10 new free comics. :) I also bought the latest Archie/Megaman crossover and the latest FiM comic--I think I need to go back for the back issues of that now.
-
I hit two stores and it was pretty nice this year.
I even managed to get a Iron Man Hero Click, and they had free giant Walking Dead posters.
-
Sadly, no free FIM comic where I went. I didn't really expect to find one though.
-
Loved the Star Wars/Avatar comic, and the Spongebob and Adventure Time comics were good too! Haven't gotten to look through the rest of the haul yet - back issues were 50% off, so I grabbed a few issues of Static and my girlfriend got the first issue of the KOTOR comic... and a Mass Effect graphic novel (she's kind of on a kick right now), for 25% off. Even got a pack of MLP trading cards!
Our current local comic shop sells a lot of cool figurines and merch, too, when I get a job I may celebrate with a tiny shopping spree. They're a bit overpriced (brushable G4s for $9), but the Final Fantasy figures and such are still better than convention prices.

My fiance and I went to 5 different stores! Ended up with 52 comics (1 for little.fox) between freebies and purchases. We made sure to make a purchase each store we went to. It was fun. :)
-
I so totally would have nabbed an Uncle Scrooge comic if the comic-giveaway-planets were perfectly aligned. ^.^

Yay! Can't wait to get my paws on it! Thanks again!
-
We went to one and got some too! I also bought 3 Fim comics.

Ooh, I'm so jealous of the Walking Dead poster! :)
I didn't go (too busy sleeping ), but my roommate did, and she brought me back the Avatar: The Last Airbender comic (I LOVE Zuko and Mai! The comic actually distressed me a little, haaa.) and a Grimm comic, with a preview of a comic called Damsels in the back of it, both quite lovely. I know she got the Walking Dead comic (which I still need to read!) and a few other things. So our store probably didn't have the poster - we're both big fans, and she would have picked up at least one if it was there, I'm sure.
