Victorian/Steampunk Literature - need suggestions, please!
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:25:21 AM »
Okay, so a bit of background - I love Victoriana, devoured the Annotated Sherlock Holmes when I was in college (and it was one of two sets of books I've seriously considered "losing" from the library - for shame! - though I dutifully returned them every time), and still retain a fond affection for the era.  I've not read much in this vein until just recently, when I picked up the Infernal Devices trilogy, by Cassandra Clare, and the Gemma Doyle trilogy, by Libba Bray.  I'm enjoying both immensely, and they have rekindled in me a keen desire to read more books of a Victorian or steampunk flavour.  Please, suggest books to me! ^.^  Old or new, doesn't matter... the wider my list when I go book shopping on Tuesday, the better book shopping shall go.

Thanks in advance!

The Time Machine. Always a favorite

I wouldn't call Sherlock Steampunkish. If you want I can try to dig through my books and jog my brain. I took a course on that era of literature, but I've got so many books in my head memory is failing.

I just got a pretty good short story anthology called "Steampunk!".  I can check on who the editor is for you.  I liked it quite a bit, although some of the stories were much stronger than others.  They were all at a minimum solidly decent, though.  It was a nice, quick read.

Have you ever read Perdido Street Station by China Mieville? I really enjoyed it. There are some sequels too, but I have not read them. I've heard the second book is the best.

If you are in to manga at all, I recommend The Cain Saga and Godchild. I actually picked up Infernal Devices because the guy on the cover made me think of Cain.

:brow:  I thought I'd posted a reply from my tablet, but I guess it's lost in the ether somewhere...  Anyhoo...

Thank you for all the suggestions!  I'm super looking forward to hitting the bookstore (much as my wallet isn't... )...  I know much of what I've read up till now has been strictly Victoriana (excepting The Difference Engine, which rocked!), but I'm eager to dabble in what looks to be a very compelling and complementary fandom. ^.^

The Peshawar Lancers by S.M. Stirling

Definitely going to check this one out.  I've devoured all of Stirling's Change series, and I'm actually kind of embarrassed that I missed this one. :sheepish:

If you are in to manga at all, I recommend The Cain Saga and Godchild. I actually picked up Infernal Devices because the guy on the cover made me think of Cain.

Oooo... which guy, Jem or Will?  'Cause that'll be a deciding factor for me... ;)  I do enjoy manga, but it's sometimes harder to track down around here.

I think gosick has a manga.  The anime was brilliant and I think it will be up your alley.

I don't know.  I've read a lot of the classics from the Victorian era, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Those too, actually!  I'm pretty much a rabid reader, and while I've read a few of the classics, I've nowhere near read 'em all... ^.^

The original Oz series by Baum is pretty steampunk to be honest...
