Title: Nirvana indecision :)
Post by: Ember1 on January 21, 2012, 12:21:06 PM
Do any of you out there find yourself vacillating between selling nirvanas sometimes?
If so why do you think? I think its partly because I am a very fickle collector.

Oh yes, definitely! What I tend to do  is put ponies on a sort of probation for a while, usually a number of months. If I can't justify keeping them, off they go! Sometimes they manage to hang on though. I don't think I'm a fickle collector, but tastes do change.

Me too, I have some argies that sometimes I just don't justify to keep, then I try to trade them or sell on last instance

I am fickle too.

I have coveted certain ponies, then when I got them they were a bit "blah". I've had quite a few French, Greek, rare Italians and others through my hands, and like Lady G says, they got a kind of probation, then sold on.

All of my Minties have stayed though!

I don't get this all too often, but I know what you mean. ;)  My Macau Jenny was on 'probation' for quite a while, and I've almost put her up for sale many times, but somehow ended up holding onto her each time. I think it's fairly safe to say she's not going anywhere now :silly:

I had a Macau Minty that I sold, along with a German Princess Primrose and Italian Sparkler that I didn't love as much as I thought I would, but overall most of my Nirvanas are here to stay :lovey:  :lovey:

I have been there too, sometimes the pony didn't feel the same when I got her as I anticipated.  Then sometimes my interest in a certain group wanes while another surges.  I also look at how difficult it would be to replace that pony if I sold her then wanted her later.

Not really.  I only buy what strikes my fancy so I rarely get something I don't already love.

I could live without most of my Argies though.  I probably like them the least.

Its strange I mean,I am not fickle when it comes to certain ponies but I think I put ponies into two groups... ones that aren't going anywhere.. and those I can if the right offer came along part with. I still have the greek baby glory MIP i found when i was just 14 and hope never to part with her. But I have sold others that I found at that same time so i guess its just about sentimentality and how much you love the pony. So nice to know I am not alone in this.

I find myself dying to have a pony, then get it and I don't care for it as much as I thought I would... so I turn around and sell it, but I also make groups like, if I had to sell this, could I live without it? and those often get sold down the road... but I've kept most of my nirvanas :)

I can't help it. Everytime i think about selling them I get all misty eyed and they look at me all sad...and I can't do it. Hahaha.

it all depends.

some ponies are there to stay :) some ponies only have a short stay in my herd. i guess it all depends on the pony! some ponies i have ended up with by acciendt too! ones that came as extras in a lot which i have falled in love with (swirly whirly for example!)

like ladyg, if i am unsure of a pony i put it in a cupbaord for a bit and after a month or two when i get it out again if i have missed her i know she will stay, if not she goes for trade or sale :)

I'm not fickle, even with regular ponies...
If I don't have duplicates, I keep, even if I don't like the pony much... like sisters or ballerina ponies. in fact once I had to part with some of my regular ponies before I start to collect nirvanas and as I really suffered letting them go, I know i'll try to sell everything before my nirvanas. I'd have to be in a huge need of money to think about selling a nirvana, even one I don't like...
I have more than 200 nirvanas and I can't imagine downsizing...

I've downsized a lot of my collection, including a fair number of Nirvanas. Problem now is that I'm at a stage where I can't downsize much further! Maybe I'll have to one day, but for now most of them can stay :)

If I am honest I have been trying to part with most of mine for the last 18 months - I get as far as getting price checks, getting pictures and then only ever sell one or two and the rest go back into their storage box! 2012 - the year that I finally deal with this!

I think its a fickleness with a lot of them - at the time I really really really needed Brazil Windwhistler - now? meh! she isnt as amazing as I thought she would be. But on the other hand the Baby Twinks who I bought just to complete the Brazil babies I completely adore! So maybe you need to meet some ponies in person before you decide if they are for you or not [man...I sound like a dating website...weird!]

uuurrrmm well i USED to have that problem.... but as y'all know by now i finally decided to sell every non-argie from my collection.
so now i only have argies and my childhood ponies left :)

the only indecision i have now is... "should i even collect ponies at all?? i should just sell them all"

obviously that thought doesnt last long... so far ;)

My collection is 100% boxed at the moment. I haven't seen them since April of last year and it's agonizing. I do plan to display a lot eventually, mostly Nirvanas. I don't think I can sell any of the Nirvanas though. I've never been able to really scale back my collection but Nirvanas would definitely be the last ones that I would sell. I just get way too attached. I think I'll miss them too much if I sell. Plus those stories about how someone sold a pony right before it got highly sought after really gets to me. lol That's why I still have two baby princess sparkles.

Good luck ember!

I feel very fortunate that Mattman was able to retrieve the galleries. I can at least still see my collection. Yeah, I don't think I can sell any. lol

Sometimes, I start to count up the amount of money I have in ponies, then think what am I doing? I have enough here to buy that car I wanted if I sell some, then other times I think Noooooo stop putting $ signs on your ponies you'd miss them if they were all gone. I have had to part with quite a few over the months for family reasons, I have a big family  :P  but I plan on getting them back again in the future  :satisfied: I have Tried and it is useless for me to fight myself lol, I am a 4-life pony collector  I can't imagine having none or just a couple

ha That's a good way of putting it. A for life pony collector. I was thinking about this thread today and remembered a Nirvana pony I sold a couple of years ago. I think it was a Mexican wedding pony. Yikes, forget the name now. Anyway, I still miss her. lol

That's me, too.  Pretty much, once I buy, I keep 'em!  Even when I upgrade, I usually hold on to the original.  Though lately I've been selling my collection off.  It started with the G3s, now I'm starting to creep into G2s, and G1s.  Nirvanas, though...they're staying.  :)

466 international  and counting!

Nice topic!

My herd and are not in good terms for quite some time now... I mean, I love my collection and I feel very proud for it but 2 years and a half ago, I realised that things got a lot out of control. Buying ponies ended up more like an obsession and less like the wonderful thing a collection is supposed to be. So, this year I too will let a big part of my ponies move to different homes were they will be more appreciated, taken care of and, hopefully, proudly displayed! There are many I will not part with, but I will try to be mature and let go of 1/3 of them, at least. There is no reason to have them if they are forever stored away, is there?

I hope that this will allow me to focus on my real grails and maybe even acquire them, little-by-little and with a realistic plan of their well-being!
