Off Topic / Favorite Things 2017!
« on: December 25, 2017, 06:54:08 AM »
We are one week from the start of a new year. With that thought in mind, I thought it might be fun to start a thread talking about our favorite things of the past year. What were your favorite songs, movies, toys, books? Did you try a new food you now love? Travel somewhere you've always wanted to go? Let's talk about everything that made 2017 fabulous!

Top 10 Songs:

10. Attention by Charlie Puth
09. Side to Side by Ariana Grande
08. Strip that Down by Liam Payne
07. Something Just Like This by Coldplay / Chainsmokers
06. Havana by Camilla Cabello & Young Thug
05. Ciao Adios by Anne Marie
04. Galway Girl by Ed Sheeran
03. Gorgeous by Taylor Swift
02. I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd
01. I'm The One by DJ Khalid, Justin Beiber, etc.

Best TV / Movie Discoveries:

I found Lucifer this year and really love that.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Spiderman Homecoming were both good.

Food: the More-ning McWrap from McDonalds takes the prize here--I love the one with egg, sausage, hashbrown and cheese.

I finished the rough draft of my fourth novel, formatted it and sent it to myself to do edits as a physical book via CreateSpace.

Jay and I went through all three 999 games and all three Danganronpa games this year.

I got my new computer, monitor, desk, printer, mechanical keyboard, etc.

What did you love? What great things happened to you? It's time to sing 2017's praises! :)

Off Topic / Home Office Advice / HP Instant Ink?
« on: October 28, 2017, 03:42:53 PM »
Hey guys! I'm heading out early next week to get all the things I need to renovate my office. I'm buying a new pc, a desk, a mouse and keyboard, a tv (to be used as TV and monitor) and a printer. (I'm waiting until next summer to upgrade my chair--I have a fabulous chair for now, so there's no need to switch that yet. For anyone else thinking of setting up any office or workspace, though, the chair is your #1 priority--ergonomics are everything.)

Three questions:

Any tips or suggestions on particular brands or items? (I'm a writer, if that helps any.)

Does anyone here use / has anyone here used HP's Instant Ink program? It sounds fabulous, but it's a company's job to make their services sound great. I'm interested in real-world feedback.

Anyone interested in before and after pictures once this is all set up?

Thanks. :)

Off Topic / Who's doing NaNoWriMo this November?
« on: October 09, 2017, 06:58:48 AM »
Anyone planning to participate in NaNoWriMo 2017 this November?

-- What genre(s) will your story be?
-- Have you decided what it will be about?
-- Are you a plotter or a pantser? (Do you have an outline?)
-- Are you doing any prep or just winging it?

I like the NaNo community, but I thought it would be nice to start a thread here for anyone who is getting involved.

***

What genre(s) will your story be?

I'm writing a fantasy romance called Enslaved.

What is your story about?

Here's the blurb:

One choice could change everything.

Guilty of killing the man her father wanted her to marry, Tali is a princess on the run. With her blood magic tapped out from the fight, she’ll need help if she plans to stay alive. When she trades a family heirloom to prevent slavers from beating a strikingly handsome merman, she winds up with a body guard. At least, that was the plan…

Caught in bed with the daughter of a powerful necromancer, Niko is certain his luck has finally run out. Then he is purchased, seemingly on a whim, by a young woman who removes his slave collar as soon as they leave the city. Without hesitation he puts the collar on her, claiming her as his own. Sure, he'll help her escape. He wants to leave, too. But until they reach the Elven capitol of Azor Rocha, she will be his.

Then Niko discovers that Tali is the mate he has waited over 200 years for. He must find a way to convince her that life together would be better than anything she has planned. But with their enemies closing in fast, will they live long enough for him to prove it?

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter, although I tend to refer to my outlines as road maps because their goal is to get me to each key story point or 'landmark'. I write series fiction, so weaving in fine details from book to book really matters to me. Without all of my notes that would be a lot harder.

Are you doing any prep?

Absolutely! I'm trying to wrap up the first book in the series, or at least most of it, because the main character from book two makes an appearance and I want her voice to stay consistent. I have a complete outline that I keep adding to as I 'see' more of the story. I have character profiles, character art, and a beautiful cover and banner to use for NaNo thanks to one of the people in the Artisans forum.

Pony Brag Arena / My herd has two new members!

I don't buy myself ponies very often. I usually get them via swaps, which is fun and deliberately slows down how many I get each year. But sometimes when I go shopping for a swap partner, I find someone I need to add to my own collection.

That's how I ended up getting Pretty Beat. A seller here had her and a pony I needed for a swap box, so I decided to buy both to better justify paying shipping for one pony out of the three or four I'll need for the box.

She's very striking in person. I really love how vibrant her colors are; especially the orange streak in her hair and her pale blue eye shadow.

My other new lovely is Princess Stargleamer, who was actually a gift. I'm very excited to finally have her in my collection. I love how the bright blue she is contrasts with the gold and pink of her mane, tail and symbols. I also love how her mane, tail and symbols all share the same color scheme and how beautifully the gold and pink blend together.

Looks like my collection is off to a nice start for 2017. :) It will be fun to see who else will join my existing herd as the year progresses.

Off Topic / What do you watch on tv?
« on: April 01, 2017, 11:02:23 AM »
Next Friday my family is getting new internet. We've needed an upgrade for quite some time. Along with that, we also decided to get a TV package and we get to pick 40 specialty channels in addition to all the standard stuff it comes with. I've never had TV in my room before, so I'm quite excited. :)

This got me thinking, since I've been put in charge of putting together our channel selections... I haven't watched TV in a long time. I've taken my family's preferences into account and added their favorites to the list. But I thought it might be fun to ask everyone here.

So, what do you watch on tv? Are you into specific shows or channels? Do you follow the news? Are you a reality TV fan? A documentary junkie? A cartoon fanatic?

Personally, I'm most excited about getting Animal Planet, Food Network and Stingray Retro. I love documentaries / shows about animals, nature and food. I also love retro music videos. I'm interested in getting a couple more cartoon / family based channels, but I'm still researching which would be my best option (I can get: cartoon network, nickelodeon, teletoon, ytv, and disney channel).

Anyway, I look forward to hearing what others watch. It may inspire what I add, or it may just be interesting. Either way, this should be fun. :)

Off Topic / Buying A Tablet. Advice?
« on: January 27, 2017, 05:42:23 PM »
I've decided that I am going to buy a tablet. I'm leaning toward an 8 inch model like the iPad Mini 4, Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 or Nvidia Shield. I can't seem to make up my mind how much space I want it to have.

I plan to use it for: writing / web browsing / e-mail / social media / gaming / reading e-books / listening to audiobooks or music / backing up writing and art / occasional photography (photographing items from a swap box; not taking it out and using it in public! this part is short term til I get a new phone. ) I may also grab a stylus and mess around with art programs, but that's a bonus; not a primary purpose.

I find typing on a touch screen less painful than using a keyboard some days (I have arthritis), so I figure I'll grab this and then update my main pc since that'll take longer than getting the tablet will.

Anyone have any thoughts on which tablet would be a good match? Thanks for taking the time to look. :)

Off Topic / What Do You Like To Read?
« on: January 16, 2017, 07:16:40 AM »
What do you like to read? I'm getting back into book blogging after taking a couple years off from it, so right now I seem to have books on my mind a lot.

I love YA, romance and fantasy. I'll read most subgenres in these categories. I read a decent amount of non-fiction, too, though I don't tend to blog about it.

Some of my favorite books / series include:

The House of Night series by P.C. and Kristen Cast
The Tiger Saga by Colleen Houck
The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
The Nocturne Falls series by Kristen Painter
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
In The Shadow Of Blackbirds by Cat Winters
The Perfect Chemistry trilogy by Simone Elkeles

Some books I'm hoping to read this year:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
And I Darken by Kiersten White
The Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi
The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Romancing The Nerd by Leah Rae Miller
Jesse's Girl by Miranda Kenneally

Anyway, I thought it might be fun to see what kinds of book worlds my friends here like to get lost in. :) Anyone else have books they love or that they are looking forward to?

« on: January 01, 2017, 09:22:49 AM »
It's time to welcome a whole new year. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to start a thread about the things we are looking forward to in the months to come. Here are some of mine:

January 10th -- My Dad will be released from physiotherapy.

January 12th -- Nintendo will be more fully revealing its new console, the Switch.

February -- Valentines and my birthday

March 17th -- Beauty and the Beast

March -- Nintendo Switch's scheduled release month.

March -- Kingdom Hearts disc with a bunch of the older games is being updated for ps4.

June 2016 -- E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo)

Year of Superhero Movies: Lego Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman, Spider Man, Thor 3, Justice League... I love Superhero movies, so I can't wait.

... And this is just the stuff I know about now. It can only get better from here! :)

Trader & Shipping Support / Minor Paypal Mix-Up
« on: December 26, 2016, 07:28:53 AM »
I ordered some clothes from Penningtons' Boxing Day Sale this morning. By the time I went to confirm, one of the items was out of stock. I went back, grabbed a new item, and checked out via PayPal. Unfortunately, I forgot to switch to my card and used my Mom's old one that she had to get replaced. My card is listed as the backup. Any idea what's going to happen here? I can't believe I forgot to switch that.

Off Topic / Do You Use A Planner Or Calendar?
« on: November 24, 2016, 12:54:36 PM »
A new year is just around the corner. What better time is there to try and develop a calendar or planner habit?

When it comes to life, are you a planner or a pantser? If you use a calendar or planner, is it a physical one or an electronic / digital one? I've been thinking that it's time I look into getting something to keep my life more organized and figured I would see if anyone here has any thoughts or suggestions.

I always thought that this kind of stuff had to be very boring, but from the research i'm doing on planner websites and YouTube, I'm actually both excited and optimistic.

I'm currently leaning toward a Happy Planner, but nothing is written in stone yet. My bf is teasing me that I'm just looking for excuses to use more washi, stickers and crafting paper.

Off Topic / Has Anyone Here Used RedditGifts?
« on: November 22, 2016, 08:43:38 PM »
I found their site by accident a couple nights ago while trying to come up with a good gift idea for my boyfriend, Jay. Their Secret Santa is about to start on the 29th and since they have a domestic option and the budget is $20, I said "Why not?" and am going to give it a go.

I'd love to know if anyone has or has had any experiences with this?

Also curious if anyone here wants to be updated on how this little experiment goes? I'd be happy to update this as things unfold if anyone is interested.

Pony Corral / Now and Then: Who Is On Your Holiday Wishlist?
« on: October 30, 2016, 06:46:48 AM »
Halloween is tomorrow night, and then the lead-up to the holiday season will be officially underway. With names already handed out for the holiday swaps, I've been thinking about which ponies I'd most like to find under the tree this year--from friends, from my bf, from myself... I've also been reflecting on holiday seasons past, remembering the toys I wanted most as a child: both those I got and the occasional 'one that got away'.

It is with these two thoughts in mind that I decided to start this thread. Feel free to share pony related holiday memories (for Christmas or whatever you personally celebrate this time of year) and feel free to let us know who's on your holiday wishlist and why. :)

Childhood:

I didn't receive ponies at Christmas as a kid, because I was not an active MLP fan back then. My love was Barbie, and wow did I have a lot of those.

However, there is one MLP I did want for a Christmas gift, and the fact that I didn't realize she was an MLP is likely the reason I didn't get her. That would be Pretty Puff, I kept thinking she was a Keyper. The year I wanted her (I didn't know her name; just that she could store things and what color she was) my parents had both been laid off from work. The large Keyper horses were likely very expensive and they decided to get me a pink and blue ladybug instead. An additional irony to the fact that I didn't know I wanted an MLP then is that the little ladybug I had back then is the only Keyper I want now.

This Year:

This will be my second year with ponies being a big part of how I celebrate. Some of last year's pony highlights included Princess Primrose, MGR Sunnybunch, Baby Starburst, my first custom (Happily Ever After), Swirly Whirly, and Twinkler (sparkle pony).

So, who's at the top of this year's most wanted list...?

Princess Starburst -- She's the last of the first set of princess ponies that I need to have my first complete set. I'm usually not a set collector, but the princesses are one of the few sets I want to own fully and completing them this year would be exciting.

Starshine -- It seems kind of unfair to her that I have so much of her merch, but I don't have her. She's one of my favorite rainbow ponies, and she is a white g1 which is something I don't have a lot of. (The only ones in my collection are Princess Tiffany and Baby Stocking).

Tuneful or Pretty Beat -- I've wanted these two from the first moment I saw them. I love their bold patterns and striking colors. I also love the fact that they are music ponies.

Bright Night and Sunblossom -- The glittery sweetheart sisters are another set I want town fully. I have Twinkler and Starflash, but I still need these two ladies.

I'm also really interested in anything that would be a 'first' for me:

-- First adult male g1
-- First winger / summer pony
-- First baby sea pony
-- First princess from the 2nd set of princesses (haven't started that set yet)

... And of course, I still want Pretty Puff. Because some things never change.

So, who are you looking for this holiday season? Feel free to share. :)

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Nintendo's Next Console Revealed!
« on: October 20, 2016, 07:44:14 AM »
Nintendo has announced that it's next console, previously known as the Nintendo NX, will be launching as Nintendo Switch in March of 2017. The console will be a home console / handheld hybrid which will run on cartridges. Anyone who wants to see the three minute reveal trailer should hop over to their favorite gaming site and check it out. My information comes from IGN.

My thoughts after seeing the trailer?

Yes! This is what I hoped we'd be seeing from Nintendo's next console and I feel that there is a lot of potential here. I will need to wait and see what games are going to be available for launch, but it is entirely possibly this may be my first time buying a launch console.

... But what do you guys think? Check out the trailer and share your thoughts! :)

Off Topic / Swapaholic.ca -- Website / Blog Idea Feedback Wanted
« on: October 19, 2016, 08:00:07 AM »
I'm considering starting a blog / website about swapping.

I want to talk about:

-- swap basics (of course, since not everyone knows or understands what a swap is, how they work, why they are worth doing, how to not get scammed / find a safe community, etc.)

-- tips, reviews and ideas surrounding craft supplies,

-- gift guides for certain holidays

-- advice when buying for certain types of dietary / allergic needs

-- listings of treats that are unique to different countries / that can't be found in certain countries

-- posts showing off teasers from swaps I am doing, swap boxes I have received, and my thoughts here and there on interesting things I buy to send to others

-- Wishlists for my various collections and my general likes and dislikes. (Nice to have that all somewhere easy to get to, especially on days when my arthritis is stubborn and copy / paste is a lifesaver. )

I'm sure I'll come up with more content ideas, but that should at least be a start.

What I'd like to know from you guys is:

1. Do you think a site / blog like this would help anyone?

2. What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started swapping?

3. When you started swapping what were the things you found most confusing / wished there was more information about?

4. Do you have any suggestions on articles or topics that you think would help new or current swappers?

Thanks for taking a look at this. I've been trying to build up the energy to get this going for months and I think I'm finally ready to see about getting it off the ground.

Last, do you think "Confessions of a Swapaholic" is a good title, or should the blog / site title just be Swapaholic.ca like the url is going to be?

Off Topic / Your favorite bath / beauty products?
« on: September 25, 2016, 09:54:50 AM »
I'm starting to organize my holiday shopping and I have several family members who adore bath / beauty stuff. While looking around, I noticed that The Body Shop (.ca, just to be clear) has their Buy 3 Get 3 Free sale on. This got me looking at all their stuff--both sale products and new arrivals. And that got me thinking about my favorite bath / beauty goodies, which has lead me to starting this thread.

Personally, I love fruity scents and I love anything coconut (which is hilarious since I hate the -taste- of coconut). My current favorite scent from The Body Shop is Mango. I am interested in trying their new Pink Grapefruit scent, though. One scent I like that is outside all of this is Bath and Body Works Cherry Blossom.

The most disappointing scent I've ever tried is / was chocolate body wash. Sounded good on paper, wasn't so great in practice.

As for what I use, I love 2-in-one shampoos (I have thick hair). My current favorite is Head & Shoulders Green Apple. I like shower gel, body lotion and body mist. I'm also thinking of getting one of The Body Shop's Cactus brushes--seems like it would be easier to hold than a cloth or loofah.

So, any other bath / beauty lovers? What scents and brands do you love? Have you seen any stores getting holiday sales underway that people might want to know about?
