Pony Corral / Re: My Little Pony references in other media!
« on: February 03, 2022, 02:49:02 PM »
In an episode of Bojack Horseman, there’s a flashback where Diane Nguyen remembers getting a Dream Castle as a Christmas present. It’s not a big plot point, more set dressing, but it is is funny because the castle comes with a pony who more closely resembles a green horse headed Barbie doll. It makes sense since all animals in that show are people.

I watched Bojack twice and don't remember that!

Oh man, that’s making me wonder if it was a different character in a  flashback who got the Dream Castle (maybe Sara Lynn?). I just remember finding Barbie Pony pretty striking!

Edit: ah, it was indeed little Sara Lynn, in the Christmas special.

The MLPmerch.com database is really helpful for keeping track of which ponies you have, because it’s picture based and you can just put a check mark next to ones you have and a heart next to ones you don’t have/want. No need for excel! It might make keeping track of your collection feel less like a chore. It’s not great for tracking doubles, though there is also a notes section for each pony, so you could put that info there, as well as details on condition if you like.

This one’s a bit more esoteric, but Centaurworld feels very g1 MLP inspired to me, only it’s the kind of MLP story you might make up as a kid, and certainly the kind you could only make with zero Hasbro execs involved.  Like, if you owned a bunch of My Little Ponies and a well meaning uncle visiting from out of town heard you loved horses and bought you a realistic Schleich horse with armor, Centaurworld feels like the story you’d make up about her meeting your ponies. See also: the old Nostalgia Chick (Lindsay Ellis) review of My Little Pony the movie that contrasted how that movie was written with her friend Nola reminiscing about the stories she made up about her pony toys.

I think you might want to post this in the Pony Corral instead. This section is for listing the ponies you have for sale so other members can buy them from you!

Thank you all for your insights! I think giving the hair a conditioner soak with one (or several) of the products you suggested sounds like a good next step, and I’m intrigued by the idea of leaving the conditioner in for a while after I’ve heat treated it.

I figure, if all else fails…I can order her some new hair to make her a nice silky tail from, and keep the original tail in a bag with her name on it in case I ever sell her. When I popped her head off she had a zip tie instead of a washer, so she’s clearly belonged to a collector before! I’m confident I can get her looking nice, even if I can’t make her hair feel lovely. But I’m not ready to give up just yet!

I recently got a Ringlet with really DRY hair. I want it to feel silky again! The conditioner I tried (just my regular L’Oréal Elvive) didn’t do much to soften the  texture. I also tried the standard process of moistening the hair, coating it in a thick layer of conditioner, and running it through my flat iron on the lowest setting, but it didn’t seem to help much. The ends were still pretty kinked.

I did some research to look for a treatment that might work better. I have heard that cheaper shampoos (one thread specifically mentioned Pantene) have ingredients that coat hair strands and leave them looking shiny but don’t really penetrate the hair follicle, and that this ingredient is helpful to treating dry pony hair. I’m guessing it’s some kind of silicone but I’m not sure.

On that note, I have heard people recommend fabric softener over conditioner for doll hair, since it’s nylon, and the things that make conditioner work for human hair don’t apply to plastic hair. BUT, I have heard really mixed things about fabric softener.  Imreadydollparts on Tumblr recently tried to fix a bunch of g3’s whose hair had been treated with undiluted fabric softener (and then coated in baby powder once that got sticky) and she said they were waxy, stinky, and that it was pretty much impossible to remove the nasty fabric softener residue from their hair. I hear that diluting the softener A LOT is key to avoiding this, but is it even good for plastic hair at all?

In short, can I please hear some of your stories about using both methods? I don’t want to damage my ponies long term. I feel like what I’ve tried so far is missing a step, and I want to know what it is. If diluting the fabric softener and washing the hair well with strong detergent after is the way to go, I’d love to know!

Thank you in advance!

I agree that same name ponies are fine! After all, Yum
Yum is the name of a flutter pony and a TAF pony.

But if you do want a new name, what do you think about Cosmic Sugar? It combines your other choices!

Pony Corral / Re: Rarest ponies top 10 list

Oh man, someone please tell me that’s not even close for Princess Pristina? I think she’s cute and hope people don’t start hiking her price over this. I did run across a Princess Pony (Tiffany I believe? - the blue one with white hair) in a local vintage toy store the other day and was surprised when the guy working there looked up recently sold ones on EBay and priced her at $75. He said that was the shop’s pricing policy, though he’d been hoping he could give me a good price and wasn’t surprised when I balked. So…a lot of ponies I remember as seeming easy to come by seem to be going for a LOT these days! Like ones I sort of had on my “wouldn’t mind having eventually but I’m in no rush to get” list are suddenly outside my budget. Oof.

😂 love it! Until I saw the close up I was puzzling out the handwriting and thought it said  “YOU!….tiny plastic tomb.”

So, do you plan to keep her MIP or free her from her tiny plastic tomb? No judgement either way of course! Just be careful…who knows what’s sealed in there with her. ;P

This is really cool! I clicked the MLPTP thread and it references a few photos of the big ponies that aren’t hosted at the embedded links anymore. Does anyone have copies of them they could share here?

Pony Corral / Re: stubborn head glue and summer wing replacement tips?

Ah thank you! I think I will try some acetone next time I face an issue like this.

Post Merge: January 18, 2022, 06:24:18 PM

Just in case anyone comes by this thread looking for similar info, I found a video of someone replacing the wings on a pony that’s very helpful. She definitely used acetone on the stubborn neck glue, but also to help remove the wing holding back insert.

Pony Corral / stubborn head glue and summer wing replacement tips?
« on: January 18, 2022, 01:29:08 PM »
Hello all!

I recently got a very cute Lady Flutter who needed new wings. She had intact neck glue and I wanted to take her head off to follow Shadowonthemoon’s rewinging tutorial. When I dunked her in boiling water, the back edge of her neck seam popped, but I had a really hard time taking it further than that without getting in their with an exacto knife. She isn’t damaged or sliced up, (I’ve seen some not great things happen when removing pony heads, and it’s not THAT awful) but her neck seam didn’t make a super clean seperation and there’s some jaggedness there. I don’t love it but it was my first time dealing with this issue, so please be kind. I know there are lots of people these days who don’t even want to buy a pony whose head is loose, so I felt kind of bad taking her apart on that front too, though she definitely needs those new wings!

I’d prefer to avoid using a blade next time I try this. What should I do if the neck glue is just stubborn? Is it best to just dangle the pony in a pot of consistently boiling/simmering water, pulling her out from time to time and gently tugging on her head? I’ve heard of people wrapping the pony in a  heating pad for a while, is that better?

While trying to remove the head I noticed the central piece of plastic that holds the wings in place seemed to be coming a bit loose too. To change out wings, is it 100% necessary to remove the head and fiddle with the pony’s internal mechanism, or can I just boil soften and pop off the central piece of wing plastic? I must admit I’m a little confused about how to take apart the internal mechanism, despite looking at the tutorial. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with in your tests!

I'm feeling really inspired by all the collaboration on this thread, so I googled "can you electroplate at home?" and you know what? You CAN! It doesn't look simple, or like a short process, but it is certainly possible.

Apparently there's even a home electroplating kit that one can buy: https://gsplating.co.uk/

And I found a few DIY methods involving batteries or phone charger parts and clamps: https://www.wikihow.com/Electroplate-Household-Metals#:~:text=Electroplating%20household%20metals%20is%20the,metal%20you%20want%20to%20electroplate.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-PtnwtOR24

Like I said, a bit daunting but possible. Even better, I found someone testing out the process on old toys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db8VVMyWmdA! While he's not getting a twinkle eye irridescence, think of all the oxie clean treated princess pony cutie marks this could repair.

My research is by no means exaustive, so if you choose to try this at home, please cross refference a bunch of reliable sources! Consider this more of a "huh, so that works!" primer, and remember to research how to do this technique safely, too! Those are electrical currents you're dealing with.

Artemesia's Garden, did the source you found the images of the iridescent clear plastic electroplated tubes say what material they were plated in to make them iridescent? If we knew that and we had someone willing to try electroplating, perhaps we could have shiny pony eyes again!

Or maybe we all learn a new technique and enamal/pearl ex works fine, but I'd be fascinated to see both side by side and next to a mint twinkle eye!

EDIT: Found out its called electroforming when you do it to plastic, AND found a supplier of colored aluminum (which looks the most twinkle-eye-ish, I think) who's willing to send out samples!

Further edit: Whoops, no, I think it might be titanium dioxide that gives the rainbow oil slick look? http://www.titaniumart.com/titanium-info.html

(Fun fact, my dad was an engineer early in his career and it's moments like these when I realize I truly did wind up with a brain a bit like his. :P It's been a fun rabbit hole, pony folks!)

As a lover of the spooky I'd feel...so dang happy to see a pony in a creepy show! And since you say gothic horror I'm assuming its more reminiscent of Del Toro and less slasher? Just my jam!
