Customs / Re: smooth painted on white, is it possible?
« on: February 01, 2018, 12:24:57 AM »
I've used a super thin, watery layer (try not to let it pool in places, but not a big problem if it does), let it dry completely, then used a super fine sandpaper to sand it down, and then repeat until opaque. It's really time consuming and tedious, but I've found that the result is really worth it!

I've used I think like 400(ish?) and 600 grit. 400 scratched a bit too far when I wasn't careful (because that's how thin my paint layers were) so I recommend 600, but any super fine sandpaper should be okay as long as you're gentle. It might not even look like it does much when you sand down the individual layers, but I feel like it really makes a difference in making the end result really even

I've used various cheap brands of paint from Michaels (including the generic one, I don't remember exactly what the others were) and Golden brand acrylics (I had it leftover from a color theory class I had to take) and found that I liked the generic brand way more because it dried completely matte while Golden was kind of glossy and plastic-y. I still got an okay result from Golden, it just way harder to work with on a plastic surface because it was really hard to get the water-to-paint ratio right and the finish just didn't look good to me. Any really matte acrylic paint should probably work fine!

I had the time to do some more g3s this week! I'm wondering if I should keep doing more g3s or if I should do other gens. And if I do other gens, if I should add a bit more variety and make a different lineart for each? (since everyone in g4 has different hair styles, I'd need to change the lineart anyway so I was thinking of whether to keep this base or make a new one entirely)

Images under the cut. They're also links to the redbubble stickers

Also, thank you Griffin and YasuSuga! :D

Thank you, Safflower and Goanna! :D

I've thought a lot about doing adoptables of them, but unfortunately I don't have the time for them right now. I may do adoptables in the future though!

Pony Corral / Edgar the Elephant hair match and Dollyhair question
« on: January 21, 2018, 08:53:00 PM »
I bought an Edgar the Elephant from my local flea market a while ago, but he was missing a tail so I bought some new hair from Dollyhair using the color recommendation from this site, but when it actually came, it turns out the color was a bit off (though the site did have it marked as an unconfirmed color match)

I did send an email and photo to the person running the site to let them know, but I was wondering if anyone here might have a better idea of a color match than me? I have a photo of Edgar held up against a hank that I bought (in Lemonade)

As you can see, Edgar is definitely darker and more goldish/blondish than Lemonade which is pale yellow

Also, would anyone happen to know if Dollyhair does returns or exchanges? I don't really see anything about that on the site and I bought two hanks in Lemonade because I've read a bit of Dollyhair hanks being on the small side, plus Edgar has a bit of a bald spot that I want to fix. If not, I suppose I'll save Lemonade for another pony or a custom or something and Edgar will have to wait since I just started college again and books cost a lot this semester  :cloud: I'm really new at restoring and Edgar's plastic is pretty thick and hard and I wasn't as careful as I could've been apparently, so, unfortunately, his neck got a little messed up when I took off his head to get rid of the remaining tail pieces left inside him and because of that, he definitely has to a permanent part of my collection now. It's not a huge deal if his hair and tail don't match 100%, but having a color difference this big would bug me forever

I made a little pixel of my ponysona to use as an icon and then a friend said that it would make a cute sticker, which gave me the idea to use it as a base to make more pony pixels! I've done the g3 core 7 so far and I want to make more ponies when I can. School just started for the semester for me so I don't really have a lot of free time at the moment

Here's my ponysona, Dazzle!

Other than my ponysona, feel free to use these in things like signatures, just please don't edit out my username! Using them for personal use like icons and signatures is okay, but please don't repost them on their own on places like pinterest, instagram or facebook. I already have them posted up on my art blog, princecatling-art on tumblr

If used here, it's not strictly necessary since I'm on the forum, but if used elsewhere, please link or otherwise give credit to me on my art blog!

I also have them as stickers on Redbubble!

I'm think it's probably just highlighter, marker, or something else that stained her, not mold or fungus. It might have been food too (that color reminds me of my school's chili! Lol XD) I'm leaning towards highlighter if it's neon. Try washing her first and see if that helps. You can try a magic eraser next. Then I would recommend nail polish remover, but be careful as it will remove paint (symbols, blush, eyes). If none of those work, try sunfading.
http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body.html#SunFading This is a good tutorial :)

I also want to say that you should NEVER use harsh chemicals like bleach on ponies! Bleach will, well, bleach a pony and other things can do bad things such as acne creams which will make white blotches appear that can spread to where you didn't even apply the cream and can spread to other ponies as well! What gave you the idea of using bleach? Just curious.

For the possible age spot on her leg (I use the term age spots because cancer can offend some people) there isn't much you can do. Sunfading doesn't really work. You could paint over it if you want.

Thank you! It's in such a small area and there's not really any other markings so it seems a bit weird to me if it was just highlighter, plus she has some pretty significant tail rust so I was worried about fungus or mold being on the inside. I'll find out for sure when I open her up to clean out the rust, but hopefully it really is just marker ;w;

I could've sworn I saw at least one website/tutorial say to use bleach, but I can't find it in any of the sites I have bookmarked. Must have been a bad tutorial D:

Also, I'll be calling them age spots from now on! To be honest, I'm pretty uncomfortable with calling it pony cancer myself, but it's the only thing all the tutorials and websites I found called it so I wasn't sure what else to use. Age spots is a much better name. The mark is really small, so I think I'll leave it alone unless it gets bigger in the future

I found a Sprinkles at my local flea market this past weekend and when I was checking the ponies I got for what I'll need to clean or fix, I noticed these bright orange stains on her face (I'll post the photos below), plus a small dark brown spot on one of her legs (possibly pony cancer?) that I didn't notice until long after I took and uploaded the photos

My phone's camera doesn't capture color well, but the spots are like neon orange in person. Also, at some point I think someone tried to manhandle her head off since her head is quite loose and there's a bit of deforming around the neck. Can anyone tell me what the stains might be and how to get rid of it? I live in a small apartment with pretty poor ventilation so I'd rather not use strong chemicals like bleach unless I absolutely have to

This is just a pretty messy doodle, but I made a ponysona a few months back. His name is Dazzle and I made him before I really started collecting, so he's not supposed to be any specific type of pony besides just a pegasus really. I drew him on paper originally while at school with some friends who were also drawing/making their own ponysonas and then I redrew him digitally and colored him when I got home. I couldn't think of a cutie mark so I just threw on some glitter and shapes (plus a little heart by his hoof like on g3s because I just always thought that was really cute) and it just stuck :,)

And this is my main fursona who's basically a cat version of him. I really like the pony Dazzle but I've always felt like a cat fursona would suit me more, so I just put his color scheme on a cat body. It might get covered up by his mane, but I might also add a star shaped blaze to the pony Dazzle? I'm only still thinking about it though

To differentiate them, I'm calling the cat Dazzle Catling (like my username!) and I'm not sure what to call the pony Dazzle yet

I'm planning to make customs for both of them to represent me on my social media stuff like my instagram! I got a secondhand Catrine DeMew that was in pretty rough condition so I've cleaned it up to make into Catling and I have a Rainbow Dash Design-A-Pony lying around somewhere that I can make into my ponysona once I figure out where it is

Introductions / Hello!
« on: December 29, 2017, 07:10:28 PM »
Hi! I'm Kris and I'm a 20 year old genderqueer trans guy (he/his pronouns) from the US. I've collected toys and figures since I was a kid, but I'm pretty new at collecting MLP dolls. I remember really liking some of the movies and playing with the Mcdonalds toys when I was a kid, but for some reason I never really got into MLP until relatively recently. Most of my MLPs are from the local flea market or were gifts from friends. Last weekend, I got really lucky and got 8 G1s in really good condition from another collector who was downsizing her collection! I also have a handful of G3s and G4s

Besides them, I also own a few Monster High dolls, one of which I've been repainting and am almost finished with and another one I'm planning to repaint and a Disney Store Merida doll which I'm also customizing and making some pretty heavy body mods for (I've turned her into a faun and I just need to find my sandpaper again before I can paint), and I'm a huge sucker for anything blindbox/blindbag. I currently have 11 Unicornos/Mermicornos and counting and various pieces from Re-Ment sets

Out of my collection so far, I think my favorite doll is currently Lofty!

I have a lot of junk in my room that I need to get around to clearing up space, so most of the dolls I've recently bought are still in the bags I took them home in, but over the weekend I'm going to start cleaning up so I have room to store and photograph them!
