How many different ponies are there? (All gens)

I got this question from a non collector, but I have no idea. I know that nobody knows exactly how many there are, but perhaps approximately?

just tell them thousands. Because really there are G1's alone are well over 1000 by the time you get to the exclusives and that's not even starting to count the Nirvanas...

What Ivy said.. I'm not sure there's any way to know. With variants, and foreign exclusives, petites and breezies..I mean,
Do you count Nirvanas as different ponies, or as the same since they have the same names.
Do you count petites at all? (G1 petites. They aren't make after any of the normal pony characters)

Even with regular G1 releases that can be difficult - for example...do you consider lavender Woosie as a separate pony from regular Woosie, do you count the German and Dutch ponies as they are HK/China releases, do you could the Euro Twisty Tails even though she is the same pony in a different pose.

If you considering no variants and work on only counting "different" characters, I think its about 460 in regular store US G1s, then about 70 MOs then maybe another 165 of the unique internationals [i.e. which still had a China/HK stamp] so all in about 695ish!

Same with G2 - several ponies have various different, slightly different releases - so if you only count each character once maybe about 144.

For G3 I believe its also around the 4000 400 mark for unique characters.

I think the G1 Us release collection is somewhere in the neighborhood of 500-600 ponies. The G3 collection (US release) is in the same neighborhood of 500-600 ponies.

Add in the G2 and UK exclusive ponies, and add another couple hundred, and other variants, and G4...

The general answer would be a couple thousand different ponies

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  I think the 4000 was a typo though.  I was astonished when I saw that there could be 4000 G3s also.   

Did you mean around 400 G3s hathorcat?

The numbers are mind blowing!  I wonder, does anyone have nearly all of them?  Maybe only a couple hundred off or maybe even closer.  I had to start collecting just my favorites because I don't have enough room and I don't like to store them in boxes.   And I still have around 500 and that was before G4s came out.

I believe there are 45 (46 if you count Spike as one) different characters for G4 brushables. For blindbags, there's probably nearly 200.
