Pocket was separated from his parents during Hurricane Katrina as a blind infant and hubby nursed him back to health. After numerous attempts to find a rehabilitator to take him, he just ended up getting stuck with us permanently. He was actually released once but ended up back a couple of days later with a broken leg. A few years ago he was give permission to stay by animal control because our area is too flooded with orphan squirrels as it is and few places are able to take them in. He's about 7 years old now and would not do well in the wild. They start getting slow after their first few years and end up getting killed in various ways when they aren't fast and agile enough anymore. We've raised a few others who were successfully released but Pocket is just a special case. I do NOT recommend squirrels as pets. They are very dangerous and vicious when they reach puberty, with rare exception. And they actually will go straight for your eyes when they attack. You always have to be careful with them (even Pocket) and remember they are wild animals not pets. They are alot of work and while they may be cute, they certainly are not cuddly. They really are not good pets.
In fact, I want a lot of the dogs on this thread so far
