Pony Corral / Re: Dumb things you did to your ponies as a kid
« on: July 10, 2022, 01:41:33 PM »
so many mohawks and forelock cuts. :( i'm sure i was well aware that a toy's hair never grows back, so i have no idea what inspired me to do it to so many poor ponies.

As a kid I hated the forelocks that would just flop in front of their faces and was very tempted to cut them. Thankfully I never did cut them, but just wet them down with water to try and make them flat. As an adult though, I'm okay buying a baby pony here and there if the forelock is a little cut (not totally cut off, but just a little shortened) if the price is cheap enough of course. The only thing I did to my G1 ponies was leave their hair braided for about 25 years. The G3's though, a couple of them I seriously hated the tinsel hair and I de-tinseled them.

Barbie however got attacked with hairspray. Poor Ice Capades Barbie. She had these big curls and they were starting to fall out so I took some hairspray and attacked her with it on a few occasions. She has very crunchy hair now.

Pony Corral / Re: 35 Anniversary ponies - Mark IV
« on: July 09, 2022, 01:46:34 PM »
Let's place our bets on the 40th anniversary ponies. I'm going with:

movie So Softs
more Twinkle Eyed
TAFs
Colorswirls
Princesses
Babies
Big Brothers
Summerwings
Rainbow Curls (they have all the molds by now)

I am going to go with some realistic expectations. I could see more twinkle eyes (since they already made one round and so far the ponies have been in groups of 2 sets). They could do so softs since Cherries Jubilee, Gusty, Lickety-Split, Heart Throb, Posey and Surprise already made it to production, so they would just need to add the flocking.

I'd really love to have sea ponies. Nice shiny pretty clean new ones. Big Brothers is an interesting option however the issue is the accessories. Every item has a cost to make, the more items, the more cost (not to mention completely having to make new molds that are completely different). I think we are most likely to see ponies that are basic in mold shape (meaning no fancy 3d symbols, flutter wings etc.) that add potential usability down the line. There are a few mold shapes in the basic lines that as of yet they have not made, for examples Powder and Whizzer.

Honestly, I will be happy with whatever we get from Basic Fun as long as it is G1 and is a new pony (one they haven't made yet), and if they can get them back into a major retailer on store shelves.

The Dollhouse / Re: Disney Animator Dolls
« on: July 09, 2022, 11:43:05 AM »
Yes, there is a difference. I am going to split these into two groups when it comes to the Disney dolls. There are "Animators' Dolls" and then all the other "Toddler Dolls".

Animators' Dolls were sold at the Disney Store and Disney Theme Parks and the boxes specifically were marked as such. They have large heads, large eyes and detailed expressive faces. These were first released in 2011 and the company has continued production since.

"Toddler Dolls" - This is a VERY large category that covers all the other dolls. Disney toddler style dolls have been being made for about 20 years. They have been made by a variety of companies. You will often see toddler dolls listed as Animator dolls on places like Ebay. The two companies listed below have made most of them, there may be others.

Playmates - "Before Once Upon a Time" was one of the earlier style toddler princess type dolls (early mid 2000's, around 2006 or so). At this time Playmates had the license, so a variety of Disney Princess toddler dolls were made and sold in regular stores. There were also other dolls that were made by them not under the "Before Once Upon a Time" title. There were prince dolls made however they were only sold in sets.

Jakks Pacific - "My First Disney Princess" is another toddler princess type doll line that was sold in regular stores. These boxes may be marked as Totallytots on the side of the box which is a subsidiary company of Jakks Pacific. There were a lot of these made and they also made prince dolls.

The link below gives some good body size information (doesn't cover the Playmates).

This is also something I found doing a quick Google search that shows earlier versions of the animators dolls.

I really liked my Barbies as a kid and did play with the quite a lot. I remember that our favorites where actually not Barbie, but two others who where called Dana and Diva. Dana had black hair and Diva was a redhead. They were singers and came with neon colored clothes and microphones. Loved them! I also really loved my Skipper. She was in more pastel colors and so sweet. But I also loved the animals the most. I had a white cat, a collie dog, a grey horse and a foal named Dixie  I also had a car, that my birds used to drive around in

Edit: oh, and we played a lot with our mom’s old Barbie’s as well. Still have them! Barbie was the dark haired one with molded eyelashes and she was always evil (poor thing). Compared to the happy-faces of the 80’s and 90’s, she kinda looked like the Evil Queen from Disney. We also had one of the first Skippers (the first?).

Dana and Diva were from Barbie and the Rockers. I always wanted one of those Barbie's but never had her. I did have other Barbie and the Rockers merchandise like story books and coloring books though. For a birthday present my husband bought me the reproduction Barbie and the Rockers doll that was part of the My Favorite Barbie line that Mattel made for the 50th Anniversary of Barbie.

My mom only had one Barbie type doll from when she was a child, so we never played with it, it was in a doll case. Compared to the 80's and 90's faces I can totally see why you would have pretended the older ones were evil/mean. They do have a particular look about them, almost a snooty or haughty look compared to the 80's dolls.

Pony Corral / Re: Brush Identification Help Needed
« on: July 08, 2022, 12:42:52 AM »
Photo 1 - Seahorse comb/pick is Barbie (see comment on photo 4)
Photo 3 - You are correct they are Barbie style brushes
Photo 4 - Seahorse combs/picks are from the Island Fun Barbie line, combs that look like a triangle and circle are Style Magic Barbie, Shooting Star comb/pick is also Barbie (these were used a few times, could possibly be Totally Hair Barbie or from the Jazzie line (Barbie's cousin) or others.

Photo 5 - Straight type brushes could be Barbie (same style 70's & 80's), the pink swirly comb ones I know came in Barbie Fashion Add-ons Hair Originals (these were made in the 1970's and early 1980's, the sets were wigs and hair extension pieces sets). That swirl handle comb was used in a number of sets, for example also the Barbie Finishing Touches.

Photo 6 - Mattel Lil' Miss Dolls (for example Lil' Miss Dress Up) - check Ghost of the Doll, not sure which ones had the bow comb or if it was just the "Dress Up" version.

Photo 7 - You are correct, Strawberry Shortcake

Photo 8 - No ideas, sorry, except that the small blue one looks fashion doll size.

The Dollhouse / Re: Can anyone id this doll?
« on: July 07, 2022, 11:41:17 PM »
Usually porcelain dolls would have markings on the back or on the head above the neck near the hairline, but since it was from a dollar store I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have markings. I did a quick search and found where someone had posted about Dollar Tree porcelain dolls. It may help you.

Off Topic / Anyone have orchids? Got some questions...
« on: June 08, 2022, 05:47:20 PM »
My husband was given a small orchid about a year ago. Basically we just put it in the kitchen window, watered it once a week and left it alone. So far we have managed not to kill it, yay. It is your average phalaenopsis orchid. However, I did repot it into an orchid pot about a month ago and noticed black stuff around the base. So I Googled and figured out it looks like crown rot, and saw some videos about how to treat it with hydrogen peroxide (to kill the fungus) and ground cinnamon, which I have not done yet as I am trying to figure out if I really want to try that out at the moment. After I repotted it a month ago it started growing an aerial root and a new flower spike (or at least I think it is a new flower spike, growing next to the old one I cut off since it was brown and is growing very slowly compared to the aerial root). Since I just repotted it, and it's growing new things I don't know that I should disturb it.

1) What if I don't treat the crown rot? Will it recover on it's own given time?
2) Anyone treated crown rot on an orchid? Did you use the hydrogen peroxide and ground cinnamon or something else?
3) If I do treat it will it hurt/stop the new growth?

Thanks in advance  :)

Pony Corral / Re: How do you display your ponies?

Minty_Magic, the claw machine is a very neat idea. I absolutely love how you have the inside of your closet painted.

He was a childhood pony. I still have all the color pamphlets with him in it too. I loved looking at them when they arrived in the mail. I only had two mail order ponies though as a child, him and Satin 'n Lace. I always pretended he was the ring-bearer.

I just bought Yum Yum on Sunday and I already purchased Best Wishes about a year ago. I never have liked BBE ponies so Baby Frosting is a pass for me. Maybe if I found a cheap one in nice condition in the wild I might think about it, but definitely not something I'd search out. As a child I always thought the doll sleep eyes were creepy on the ponies. I had two BBE as a kid, BBE Ribbon and BBE Tiddly Winks.

Pony Corral / Re: Mini Brands Toy Pony
« on: May 21, 2022, 09:11:49 AM »
I'm familiar with the Mini Brands Toys, never got them because of how random the capsules are.

Agreed... however I seem to have a problem with the "Ooo look a Mini Brands ball" when I go shopping. The pony is cute but I wasn't really happy with what I got out of the couple series 1 Mini Brands Toys (I think I bought 2 or 3 balls and got almost all duplicates), so didn't buy any series 2. I really like the new Disney Store Mini Brands though and I have had really good luck with those. If you look on Ebay you can find the pony one in auctions for about $2, but with shipping they are about $6 depending, which is about the price of the ball in stores.

I'm up for anything Basic Fun has not already made yet, so a nice wide open door of possibilities. Only request would be that they continue to try and find major retail stores for them since the last couple sets I had to resort to Ebay to get them once Target dropped them.

I don't wear tights, but I would love to have leggings with similar prints.

Agreed. Leggings would be cute.

Pony Corral / Re: Basic Fun Ponies, keeping them MIB or opening?
« on: April 02, 2022, 10:28:55 PM »
Most of them are all opened and on display except the latest round since I haven't made a space for them yet. The empty boxes I have stored on shelves behind Barbie and Disney Doll boxes.

I did cave and get all the Basic Fun Twinkle eyes even though the only place I have to keep them is in the closet.  :(

That's okay. A lot of my more recent Basic Fun MLP's are in the closet too. I just have them stacked in a way that when I open the closet doors they are "on display" stacked in their boxes on the shelf.
