I'm familiar with sculpted and film wings, but I don't think I've seen any other ones before.
I'd like to participate and I do meet all the requirements... but I've never sculpted before and I'm still what I would consider to be on a newbie level of customization. Hey, don't feel too bad. I've never sculpted wings before either, and other than feathers on my BB peacocks, I've not done anything feathery/wing-y. This is going to be a new one for me, so I'm really excited, and ready to stretch my wings (pun intended) on a new technique!

I'm mostly okay with whatever kind of wing... the only thing I'm hesitant about are real animal parts; feathers, insect wings, etc. I don't think they'd hold up very well and feathers might be too tempting to my cats ^^;

Also, I know I said it in my form, but when it comes to fairies, I don't like the look of "slap some butterfly wings on it and call it a fairy". I'm not a huge fan of butterfly wings in the first place :)

10. Extras are not required, But everyone loves receiving extras in there package. However, do not go overboard with these. This is about the customs. A small treat/gift or 2 is fine and good but not too much. After all, you worked hard on the custom, it should be the most exciting part!

How does everyone feel about stands/bases? I know it's hard to balance sometimes depending on the project but I a limited on space so I think I'd rather no base if possible, or a small base. I'm just thinking in terms of display my pony shelf isn't very large.

Personally I don't mind of you experiment but I'd like a proven durable clay so that I know the piece will last and ship well. :) I use both and have no real preference otherwise.
gosh everyone is already prepping baits? I have my pony sketched out and an fighting with what colors and pose i want to use. :S
I don't even have a solid idea yet, much less started picking out baits. I have some elements floating around in my head, but I haven't put them together in a pony yet. Sometimes my process frustrates me. Part of the trouble is that I want to do EVERYTHING! lol

So, uh... how big is too big? I've trimmed my armature down twice and these suckers are still going to be huge. Realism, and all that... 'cause a pony can't fly with no itty bitty wings :lol:I've found that when I do wings, I always make the armature a fair bit smaller than what I actually want, because things easily get out of hand once I start sculpting.
So, just an update and some small chat: update on the experiment with the Crayola clay - it is cracking in some places, but I imagine I can fix it when I add feathers later on. Will snag a picture tomorrow when I get back from work. Hopefully it will have dried some more by then.
And the small chat is that my dad has put up two bird feeders outside their dining room windows, and the cardinals are absolutely dominating them! They fluff up their feathers so they look huge and fuzzy, and they are fuzzy about sharing it with the other birds (we have some others on the other side of the house that the others visit). My dad loves getting to see them, as they were his grandfather's favorite birds, and his grandfather was very dear to him, so he enjoys it.
I wish we had taken pictures, but about 6-7 years ago, we had a golden eagle that was roosting in our oak tree, before it died, and he was such a beautiful sight. After about two years of consistent summer roosting, he didn't come back. Not sure what happened, but we miss seeing him.

I dunno you don't think it will continue to crack and crumble long term? It's concerning to me if it's already cracking, it makes the clay sound brittle. I know others have used it though.

I went to work last month with bandaids on a few of my fingers. My office manager knows what I do with ponies, so when she asked what happened I casually replied "Oh I was decapitating ponies and sliced myself real good" right as my new coworker walked in. She gave me the most utterly horrified look, and my office manager and I were in hysterics - had to compose myself so I could explain, which just led to further giggle fits.woo hoo! i got hair in the mail :DI was discussing plastic storage containers with some coworkers once and held up one of the ones we had on a shelf and said "I have one of these, it's filled with pony hair!" And then they all moved away from me.

One of my wings is angled lower than the other. Trying to decide if I need to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch.

I haven't shipped tons of ponies, but I have shipped several polymer clay sculptures and I've had a lot of luck using wadded up grocery bags of all things. I find they squish well to mold into all the little crevices and cushion things well enough so that you can shake the box madly and nothing will move. I try to allow enough space in the box to have at least 3 inches of padding between the sculpture and the box and I haven't had any damage yet. That's how I'm planning to pack mine. :)

I would wrap the pony in tissue paper (white) first to avoid any ink rubbing off from the bags and/or the plastic itself sticking to the pony

Usually each artist shows off the pony they made in their own thread after it's been received by their partner :)Yep this!!! And then I add a link to that thread an pop it next to the names list at the front here, so all can find easily from that way also!

My pony is FINALLY ready to ship out tomorrow after an unbelievable amount of problems. :(
My gosh I thought this pony would never be done...I swear, everything that could go wrong, DID! The wings broke twice from being dropped or bumped (not by me!!), she got toasted while resting in the oven after her final bake and melted ever so slightly, I had extreme airbrush/painting issues, kept breaking needles while rehairing, ran out of dullcote partway through sealing, had to repaint one eye once and the other eye twice...all on top of working full time, catching multiple flu viruses and the tendinitis problems with my thumbs that limited working time to between 10min and an hour daily. :faint:
That's it...no more swaps for me for a long time...I think I'm cursed! :yikes:
Partner, I am so very sorry for the delay in getting this pony out to you but you are fairly close to me and I'll be sending her out via International Priority mail so she should get to you quickly. I really, really hope you love her when she arrives!!! :cry:

this sounds almost exactly what i've gone through!! except that in the middle of it i slipped and injured my shoulder! and i feel the same way about avoiding swaps until i get more practice!! my pony will be ready to go tomorrow and i completely and utterly apologize to my partner!
but on a good note I GOT MY PONY TODAY!! omg thanks so much BRIGHT EYES!!!! she is so stunning i literally stared at awe at her for quite a while. she is so perfect and i feel so undeserving after all the problems i've had with my pony! and extras! totally needed that chocolate! thanks!! and those patterns!! where did you find those?? so cool :D you've made this week end on a much happier note and i thank you so much!!
