Hey all! The G4 Fashion Style Swap has been approved! Sign-ups will start on Friday, and pay attention to the dates - the times run a little longer now, since a few people were concerned. Hopefully this will change some minds. :)
Pay special attention to the class requirements when getting your form together! Standard vs. Epic doesn't necessarily mean Intermediate vs. Expert - it's about the level of work you're putting in to the pony and the complexity of the finished result. That said, I would encourage less-experienced customizers to use the Standard class, but if you can prove your mettle to me with examples of your work, we can definitely find you a place in that class. Advanced customizers can feel free to enter either category, as you know that it's about what you can handle at this time rather than what your abilities are.
As previously discussed, if finding baits is an issue, please let me know - I can definitely assist you in getting your hands on one. Also know that TRU currently has a few models in stock right now as well for a decent price.
Dates:
Sign-ups: May 18th-June 5th by 11:00 PM EST
Partners Assigned and Notified: By June 6th
Check-in 1: June 29th by 11:00 PM EST
Check-in 2 (Photo Check-in): July 18th by 11:00 PM EST
Check-in 3 (Photo Check-in): August 6th by 11:00 PM EST
Shipping Deadline: August 20th-27th (you must get approval before you ship!)
Rules:
1. You must be 16 years or older, as per Arena rules.
2. You must be an active member. I need to not have a problem getting a response from you via PM. This swap is open to members who have been here at least 3 months and have at least 100 posts.
3. You must be able to prove that you are reliable. You should be able to provide at least 5 feedbacks (8 for Epic Class), and your total feedback should be positive. At least one feedback needs to involve some sort of swap or trade. Feedback should come from the Arena or the TP (with at least one coming from the Arena); Ebay only works if you're stuck for one more piece of feedback.
4. You must have knowledge of customizing. Please be able to show me at least one example of a finished custom (three if entering Epic Class.)
5. You MUST ship on time. I understand that real life problems come up, but it is your responsibility to contact me so that I'm aware of the problem and so I can make arrangements.
5a. Proper shipping is your responsibility. Please package your customs very well. No colored tissue paper/newsprint which could rub off on the custom. Be especially careful if you have sculpted, as sculpted parts can break easily during shipping. Wrap them well and place paper or bubble wrap along all sides of the box, padding the item so that it doesn't move around the box.
6. Keep your partner a secret! Don't tell anyone and risk spoiling the surprise. You don't know who talks to who, so please don't tell anyone, even your bff.
7. If you do not check in, you cannot send or receive a pony.
8. Extras are not mandatory, but as this is a swap, you're definitely allowed to include them, and often people do expect them. Just remember that in all cases, the pony should be the centerpiece.
9. You cannot switch classes after you have signed up. If you sign up for Epic Class and there is a concern that you may not be able to complete a custom that meets those requirements, the swap hosts may, at their discretion, switch you to Standard Class.
Class Expectations
Standard Class - You should be entering this class if your plans for your FS bait include a rehair w/styling, a paint job, in additon to some minor details/embellishments (minor sculpting included, like detail sculpting.) This class requires 5 feedbacks and proof of one completed custom.
Epic Class - Those who enter this class are expected to go beyond the average custom. This may include: major sculpting (ie. large wings, clothing), reposing/engineering a pose (including merponies), drastic hair techniques (ie. dyeing gradients, extreme amounts of hair, etc), clothing sewn or sculpted on the pony, very intricate paint work, flutter/fairy wings, and anything else that goes well above and beyond the original call. You do not have to do all of these things. Doing one of them is enough to qualify you. This class requires 8 feedbacks and proof of three completed customs.

I would love to try this:) I've never used a g4 before and I just acquired a rather baity princess luna that I was planning to customise. Also, echoing Lilacamy here, how many hair hanks do you think it would take?

That's a great question. I've only done them using multiple colors and not just one, but to be safe I'd go ahead and get more than one hank of hair. (I also make my ponies with very long hair, so your mileage may vary.) If just using one color, I wouldn't imagine it'd take more than 1 1/3 hank.

I actually find them less daunting than regular G4s, but that could just be because I've slashed my fingertips with X-Acto blades trying to get neck plugs out. XD

OH AND I wanted to add that if you're interested in joining but are having trouble finding baits, I can help! My local stores always have Fashion Styles. It'll either be Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy, though, but hey, at least one's an earth pony!

Oh and also, I can also help out with obtaining baits :) I can get a hold of FS Rarities from my local stores if anybody needs unicorn baits. The best price for you all with shipping included would be $25 (loose in a bubble mailer, accessories included) :) .

Well, in case my stores don't carry - I will have to check!!! - I see amazon has some for $14...that works for me! I am really leaning towards doing this. I've done just one swap last year & now that I am back I want to do more!!! And this one does sound fun!! A bigger canvas could be really awesome......but like I said before, I am just nervous about coming up with an awesome kick-butt design for such a big girl...Ahh. :scared:

She's the only one that I can't seem to get my hands on, besides AJ (which you would be foolish to bait a FS AJ now that she's fetching $50+ on eBay! Hehe.) I'll see if I have any in my bait box left, though! I had a ton of them at the beginning of the year.

Edit: Question for anyone who has done an FBR on a G4 "Playful Pony" bait... how in the WORLD do you get the paint to stick? It just beads up...

Got my bait this afternoon, and I don't think I could have been assigned a more perfect partner if I tried. Seriously. We match like crazy!

I always prime really well with gesso, and it's never posed a problem on the regular G4 ponies. Gesso gives me really smooth FBRs.

Sometimes a little less water in the paint seems to help also. A fine grit sand paper will always be your friend as well for any fbr since you can use it to sand small bits of dust out of the dried paint before the next coat...

I just let mine bead up and keep brushing it thin. It smooths out with the type paint I use, and eventually enough gets on there that it stops beading up. Patience and layers :)

I'm trying something new with my pony, at least it's new to me: I try how a pony would look like when painted like a Monster High. Blushing with pastels and so on :) I like the result so far. I was lucky enough to find a bait of a good color so I don't need to do a FBR. I just blush some more colors on her and then paint her eyes.
I'm almost done with this step, next is rehairing :D I found all the hair I need from home, I don't need to order any yay ^^
I'm also done with making a pattern for the dress. Had some trouble with sleeves as always but managed to make them work.

Heavens, yes!! I use professional grade acetone and have had to really put some elbow grease and patience into them. It's weird, some of them come off easy as pie, but then others..... not so much.. XD

Amen! I use the big blue can as well. I've gone through a few. I like to keep a little bit poured in a shot glass when I'm painting. Easier to get on a qtip that way.

Well, okay... It WAS the smoothest FBR I ever produced. I ended up trying to paint some details onto the front hooves and everything got messed up, so I had to scrub those hooves clean. Hopefully it'll look nice when I'm finished... ^^;

Now that I have a design I just need to clear all the painting crap off my table and get out my sculpting junk. Probably Monday I will start sculpting for this.
Out of curiousity, Darkhorse, what brand paints do you use for your metallics? I'm thinking that shimmery effect would go great with this design but my current metallics lack shimmer. For that matter, to keep the shimmer in paint, what sealer, brand and all, should be used? My Dullcote lives up to its name and would not work I think. I could always use Mod Podge I suppose. Every single "acrylic sealer" I have used before has remained sticky so I refuse to try more of those without specific brand recommendations. Blah.

I finished painting my girl, tried a bit different style this time. I think I like it, though the lashes could be a lot cleaner (a forever perfectionist here).
I will continue her dress tomorrow and will start her reroot this night as it seems that I won't be sleeping much :coffee: That's what I get for forgetting my sleeping meds home...
I was about to do a simpler design for her outfit, but I decided today that it + her hair would not be EPIC enough so I will change my plans a bit. Luckily it won't mean completely new patterns, I will just change it a little and add layers. Hopefully it will look good when I'm done and hopefully the layering idea will work. I should go and buy some cotton (not telling which color ;) ) for two of the layers.
Oh goodness how I hope this will work out, I'm hand-stitching the whole outfit for the best result and if it still ends up looking bad I will be one sad pony.

I accidently made the symbol on one side smaller than the other, and since it's a FBR, I can't fix it without taking the paint off of the whole body. :| I think it's fine, though, and I still really like the pony. I'll just make the bigger one the display side.

Dyeing hair is easy! Nylon takes dye very well, just start with the lightest color and dip it in vinegar to keep the colors bright!

I have been meaning to do a tutorial on long ringlets for ages and ages; Since I actually hate myself enough to add another 100+ Plugs to this pony mane (yesh, srsly) she'll make the perfect candidate for the photos! .... If this design doesn't kill me, that is. :drunk: I highly doubt I'll have it finished quick enough for it to be of use to those in this swap but hopefully future generations will benefit from it. :)

Yah, I might have to widen the tail hole, too, I'll have to wait and see there. While waiting on ordered stuff to arrive, I cut up a rather baity G3 in a pose I didn't care for, and am trying this out. I didn't want to do it for the first time on a swap pony though. It seems easy enough so far. I'm not sure what pose I would give a G4 though. Their pose is so static, unlike the dynamic G3s.

Anyplace that sells nail polish remover should have it. Be sure to find the one that's 100% acetone, since some places sell more than one kind.

I know that, personally, trying to paint fishnet would be a nightmare for me! :faint: I have a couple of G3 customs with real fishnet and it looks just fine on them. Since the FS G4s are bigger I imagine that fishnet would look very good on them indeed!
I think I just about have my design good and solid. Now to finalize it and start with this redunk rehair... XD

I think I'll redo a part of the dress. The sleeves ended up too long, I'd like them to be shorter. Good thing is that I don't need to make the whole outfit again, I can shorten the sleeves without tearing everything apart.
I started rerooting today, goodness how many holes this girl has in her head, and I didn't even add many more! Those who've had 100 or so added to them will be really epic looking!
I did have some trouble at start, I usually reroot with a tool and a knot in the middle of the hair, this time I wasn't able to do that as the plastic is too hard for it. I think I'll reroot the normal way and glue the inside of the head when I'm finished, that should hold shouldn't it?

No, not finishing just yet :) Still gotta make the dress ready (needs one layer still), give the pony some gloss and finish rehairing and style the hair.
One reason why I'm so far done is that I didn't need to do a FBR and I'm on summer vacation or something like that so I can work every day on my pony. I'm also quite quick with a needle both in sewing and rehairing :D
The pins I need for styling the hair are coming from from UK so I won't be truly finishing untill they arrive, which may take a week or two. Hopefully they won't be lost in mail, I doubt I could find the right colored pins from here.

I didn't ask this in the form, but I always like to ask this in swaps ... not that there's anyone I don't trust to follow through, but there's always that slim possibility that someone goes without a pony. I will always take on the first person who misses out on a pony, but in the VERY VERY slim chance that there's someone else who misses out, is there any other kind person who'd be willing to fill in a pony in that very rare circumstance? Just asking to cover our tails. :)

I was about to say that if that happens hopefully I could use a pegasus bait, but then I remembered that I just got two earth FS G4 and there are couple of Twilights in the store nearby so I should be able to do any of the types :)
Phew, my fingers are sore as I just finished rehairing. I ended up putting 50-70 new holes in her head :blink: There were so much room between some of the holes that I felt compelled to add some hair. I'm quite nervous when I think about styling that thick, thick hair - what if everything I try on it looks stupid because of the volume? I guess I could always leave it as it is now, straight and rather long though that would be a really simple choice. Hmm.
And why is it that everytime I don't sleep well I become this rather talkative thing when normally I am on the quiet side? @_@

I finished the dress today. I quite like how it came out, even thougj the last layer could be more detailed. Now I just need to make her hairdo and gloss her eyes and I'm done - goodness how I hope this is epic enough! :yikes:

I am fond of blends,, but mine are always super subtle and when I get done, I cannot even tell that I blended anything. LOL. It does create a unique color though. I get scared about trying this with wild colors like red and pins and greens and purples and such. Looking forward to seeing yours!

Okay, so my partner has their 3 favorite colors on their list, & I really wanted the pony to be one of those colors. So, I dyed my girl one of the colors....but she came out so dark that she actually was a different color, one not on their list. Now, fbr is NOT an option for me. (My first custom was a fbr & she came out looking good at first, but then after really examining her, she looks horrible). So now my girl is so dark & can't be lightened & I just don't know if I should go out & try to find a new girl & start over, or just say screw it & see what happens. The color she came out IS a pretty color, but just not one of my partners faves, & I don't know how it'll look with my hair colors, accessories, etc. I guess it doesn't hurt to say the color I was going for was blue & she came out purple.
So, any thoughts/opinions here would be helpful!!!! Help!!! Should I start all over or just work with the purple pony? AHHHH! I'm going crazy!

I just ordered the colors to be put together on Dollyhair. It's a really dark color and a really light color, so I'm hoping that the mixture will be nice. I also mixed polypropylene and nylon, so that should be interesting as well.

Oooh. That is rough. I sympathize for you. Just be aware that if this is a fresh dye job, dyes can take months to settle into the plastic. Especially dark dyes. Black ponies for example, have bled through 3 months after being dyed back when I used to dye. Something dyed fresh and painted could very well bleed color through the paint.
Just something to keep in mind as a possible risk. Good luck with her.
Maybe some folks who didn't swear off dye jobs like I did could give you some great tips on how to salvage her. :)

Maybe try to stick to the favourite colours as the hair and symbols stuff as long as it works with the body colour...?

So.. My pony had uneven feet which caused her to rock. I thought maybe putting the boots on her rear feet would fix that.
It did not.
For now, I have a little bit of Apoxie under the short leg. You can't see it when she is standing there.. It isn't obvious that I did it.. Unless you pick her up.
Should I leave it on to balance her, or take it off and let her rock? Its only a little rocking, but it annoys me.

It is assumed that perhaps there was a forgetting to update the credit card snafu.
Also, the rocking is distracting to me. But I'm a little OCD about details sometimes. I think that if my partner decided they didn't want it on then it would be easy to pop off. Maybe I will pop it off and send it along and they can glue it on if the rocking bugs them too.

Got the pins today and finished my pony's hairdo a moment ago, now my fingers are all sore from poking them into her head XD I tried to style her tail too, but it looked goofy so I let it be straight and long.

I've got a bunch of material to use for the clothes...not sure about a FBR though I kinda like the base colour however this is a huge hole in her back after removing the wings...but she will be wearing clothes. so I am kinda torn...I know I can fill in the hole but can I match the base colour...or do I paint the symbol on the back and the flanks...hmmmm decisions decisions....

I had to scub all the paint off, coz it was peeling, and now am about to start all over again...

I'm thinking of repainting today the old fashioned way, not using the airbrush. I'm itching to use it but I simply don't have room for it now.

I am so pleased with how my design is turning out so far. I think if I hadn't done the dress I would have hated my repose. But the dress hides all the ugly joints.
What is the trick to getting the limbs to stay? I put foil in and put apoxie over it from inside the body, and tamp as much around the foil into the foot as I can but it still pops off when sculpting more. I finally resorted to slathering a ton of super glue on each limb that popped off.
Also, when trying to get a smooth finish, when I sand it when I am done, the fine blended bit rubs away leaving a noticeable seam. But if I don't sand it I have lumps and fingerprints.
What are the tricks to a good Resculpt that you don't need to hide the joints on?

I ended up scrapping my original idea and restarting. The bait I'd been using had the neck plug cut, and while I could have just sculpted a new one... well, I'd rather not give my partner a more-or-less broken pony XD Since I was selling all my Fashion Styles anyways I just kept one to use :D So I'm a little behind again but it will be worth it!

Mine's painted, for the most part. She's been painted, she's got some gradients done, and the hair is on its way. This weekend I'll work on the cutie marks and possibly her eyes :)
On the other hand, I've got one of the extras all completed, and it's been done for about 3 weeks now, at least!

Well firstly I forgot to scrub off the lotion that would of been left on the sculpted parts, so after 3 days of painting her base coat, it started to peel off, so had to scrub her down an start again, So tried again, the same thing happened, so I bought new paint, this paint is thicker, and is leaving lines, Ive tried sanding it back, but its in tight areas, so just not sure what to do from here. Its frustrating me!!

When you washed the lotion off did you use soap and water? I like to go over mine with acetone, then soap and water. That usually helps.

Rubbing alcohol should do the trick if you don't want to use acetone.

Hey I missed check in yesterday....been kinda crazy around here. Between my new job at JoAnn fabrics, and a few other issues, I just completely have lost track of all time. Yesterday I found out my former boss died the other day, so I had his viewing today, so that has me all sad.
But now I am home & working on my pony!!! I am doing a few things today, she is coming along...have been neglecting her, because I just have too many ideas in my head, can't pick just one! But I think this pony may be my best work yet! This girl is something I never would have thought I'd be making, but wow, I think she is going to be awesome!!!! I hope that is a good check in? Cause I am going back to working on her!

Seeing that Photo Check-in reminder got me jumping! I'm finally getting my nerve together to airbrush the body! Turns out white takes just as many coats with an airbrush as it does with a paintbrush. Im letting my compressor cool down right now!

Ugh, I haven't worked on mine in a bit. I started painting the base but I still have some sculpting to do on the pony. I'm wrapping up a commission this week and hopefully I'll be working on the swap pony this weekend.

Well. She's done :) I even managed to make her an accessory. She has her little flaws here and there, as most all works of art do.. But I LOVE how she turned out. Im serious when I say if my partner doesn't like her, I will be happy to keep her.
I started out with an idea drawn on paper.. and she took on a life of her own as I worked on her. She gave me so many learning experiences!

I have found G4 FS ponies to be really lovely to work with, I'm working on one outside of this swap and I love making her. I could even say they are one of my very favorite baits.
I still haven't started on the extra I've planned but I have all the supplies ready.

FINALLY some inspiration hit me! Will be working a lot this weekend to get more of her done :D I already have my hair and paint colors of choice, so there's only a bit of sculpting left to be done and then start painting!!

Hey all! I'm trying to get addresses out as I can. In order to expedite the process, please include a photo of your finished pony and the name of your partner for confirmation.

Well... guess there's a first time for everything... had about 1/3 of the hair done, but realized the combination I used was too bright for the design of the dress, so I removed all of it trying to save as much as possible by taking off plug by plug :drunk: *sigh*...

Thank the sweet PonyGods for small favors!!! XD Now I can chill! I'm done with everything but embellishments and photos. I REALLY want good pictures of this girl and it looks like a grey day today. I'm sooooo happy that I can give it a couple of days to clear up and get smashing photos and still be on time. :)

Don't worry just yet, hunnybunny!! Just because the postal system says it's been 'delivered' that does Not necessarily mean that your partner has gotten her pony yet. ;) I had a firsthand experience with a similar situation just a few weeks back, where the parcel was dropped off in the apartment's office. That can be considered "delivered" to USPS apparently! XD

I was researching shipping times a few weeks ago when something I shipped internationally went missing, and someone had a horror story about sending something from the US to Australia, and the package made a detour through Russia.

I am so sorry I hadn't said anything until now - I didn't know she was here! Apparently my mother came over to borrow a cat carrier while I was at work and brought in my mail. Assuming the box was a pony, she put it in the pony room, and then never told me! I'm not in the pony room every day so I had no idea she was in there!
But now that I know, I LOVE HER! She is beautiful and perfect, and in the words of Stevie Nicks herself, "stunning and pure. When (I) first saw her, (I) fainted to the floor." You hit every one of my loves, I swear! I'm going to have to go buy a FT Bird stand too so her friend can sit by her, because she is also too stunning NOT to display!
And to my other partner - probable shipping SNAFU. Pony should be fine, just very late. :(

I got my pony just now from Twilight Whispers! When I tell you that the beauty and perfection of this pony brought tears to my eyes, I am not joking. My husband rolled his eyes at me for tearing up over how beautiful she is!
One of her wings came off during shipping, which is surprising because she was packaged extremely well. It was probably the heat over here. The wing wasn't damaged though, so I am gluing it back on straight away!

:enraged: All right, I don't care if this "ruins" the surprise of who my partner is, but I'm starting to get really mad at the Postal system.
I mailed my custom via Priority Mail last Saturday... only for USPS to send it to the wrong zip code (even though the address I got from Eviecorn matches the address printed on the label AND the address I double-checked via Google Maps), then trap it in "forwarding" limbo for 4 days.
What on earth is going on, and what should I do? Is there a number I can call to get a more definite location on the package? I weighed it on my scale myself and paid over thirteen dollars to ship it, so I know there's nothing wrong with the postage cost itself. -_-

If you mailed it Priority, you should be able to call the post office and see what's going on with it. Just be ready with all numbers.

Mostly everyone has shipped and a lot of ponies have been received! This is going well. :) I am still waiting on updates from two folks, who have been PMed, so please, if you read this, let me know something by responding!
In light of some issues that have gone on, I might need people to volunteer to adopt those who may not receive ponies so that they may receive a replacement. I have taken on the first one, who I know is definitely not turning in. If you are willing to do so (this may not be the case - your services may not be needed), please let me know either here or via PM. Don't feel pressured - I definitely understand if you can't do it right now. If you can though, please please let me know! :heart:

I know the pony I sent off hasn't been accounted for yet. If it doesn't show up, I can make another for my partner. It left the country on August 26 and could be held up in customs.
